Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a method and a device for the pulse operation of high-pressure discharge lamps to improve the lighting properties.
Methods and devices for pulse operation of discharge lamps have been known for a long time. When using sodium vapor discharge lamps, an increase in the color temperature can be achieved in this way. Notes include, for example, the patents DE-OS 2825532, 3641070.
In the known operating modes, the lamp is scanned with differently shaped wide pulses (〉 100 us) at frequencies around 200 to 500 Hz. In order to prevent the discharge between the blanking pulses from extinguishing, it is supplied with a holding current during the pauses. When operating without a holding current, the pulse repetition frequency is so high that it is often not possible to achieve sufficiently high pulse current strengths if the nominal power is observed, which, for example, results in a drop in the color temperature. The holding power should be kept relatively low, since it does not contribute to the achievement of the lighting parameters. A technical disadvantage when operating the lamp with a holding power of a conventional type is the relatively large power loss on the components that limit the holding current. Separation phenomena occurring in unipolar operation can be prevented by using bipolar pulses. A circuit arrangement for this is described in the patent specification DE-OS 3540985. The relatively high technical outlay would increase even further if a base load was fed in.
Another circuit arrangement is presented in US-PS 3657598. It is used to operate discharge lamps at high frequencies, but the idea of gating was not followed. There is therefore no provision for a base load. In the circuit arrangement presented, the discharge lamp is in series with a capacitance and is switched over it with the aid of switching elements, e.g. Thyristors, charge or discharge.
The aim of the invention is to develop a method and an arrangement for the pulse operation of discharge lamps, which enables the lamp to be gated with a circuit arrangement which is technically simple to implement and has a high degree of efficiency.
According to the invention, the object is achieved in that the pulse current is formed from bipolar holding current pulses and bipolar gating pulses with a frequency below the holding current pulse frequency and there is a currentless phase between each individual pulse. At a frequency of the strobe pulses above 100 Hz, the pulse duty factor is below 0.2 and the holding current pulse frequency is an integral multiple thereof. Pulse groups can be formed with several strobe pulses. The energy of the strobe pulses is increased by connecting a voltage source or charge stores.
The associated circuit arrangement is characterized in that, in addition to a charge storage device and two switching elements, a further switching element is arranged in series with a further charge storage device or a voltage source in the lamp circuit. Two charge stores are connected in series or in parallel. Surprisingly, it was found that stable lamp operation is possible even with a pulsed base load feed. This means that despite de-energized phases between the pulses the discharge does not stop.
By feeding in very short, relatively high-current pulses as a base load, e.g. needle pulses, the lamp can already be gated here, so that the base load does not represent a significant loss in achieving the lighting parameters, such as color temperature, luminous efficacy, and the efficiency of the Arrangement is thus increased.
The mean power fed into the lamp thus results from the frequency of the base load pulses and the gating pulses, as well as their energy. The base load frequency is essentially dependent on the inertia of the discharge and must be selected so that safe lamp operation is possible.
A circuit arrangement in which the discharge lamp is in series with a charge store and is charged or discharged by switching elements is suitable for the low-loss generation of the required pulses. This results in a bipolar pulse sequence with currentless pauses, which must correspond at least to the release times of the respective switching elements. The lamp is gated by increasing the energy of the respective pulses. For this purpose, the effective size of the charge store or the charge voltage is increased according to the gating frequency by a further switching element.
An inductance can be connected in series to the entire lamp circuit, which can also be arranged in series with the gating circuit. The ignition device can be connected in parallel to the lamp.
Fig.1 zeigt eine Anordnung mit parallelgeschalteten Ladungsspeichern.
Fig.4 stellt ein bevorzugtes Ausführungsbeispiel dar.
Eine diesem Thyristor Th3 antiparallel geschaltete Diode D1 ermöglich die Entladung der zweiten Kapazität C2 beim Schließen von Th2.The invention will be explained in more detail using exemplary embodiments and the associated drawings.
