Bei einem bekannten Vielwalzengerüst dieser Art (DE-GM 84 03 103) trägt jede Säule einen auf ihr fixierten doppelseitig beaufschlagbaren Kolben. Durch Beaufschlagung der Kolben ist es zum einen möglich, den Oberteil anzuheben und abzusenken, und zum anderen, die gewünschte Walzkraft aufzubringen. Die Auslegung des maximalen Hubes der Zylinderkolbeneinheiten richtet sich nach dem abzudeckenden Bereich der Dicke des Walzgutes. Das bedeutet, daß bei dickem Walzgut die freie Höhe des Zylinderraums der Zylinderkolbeneinheiten, in dem hydraulischer Druck für die Walzkraft ansteht, klein ist, während sie bei dünnem Walzgut groß ist. Eine große Höhe des Zylinderraums ist aber für das Walzen ungünstig, weil wegen des großen Volumens des Zylinderraums bei großen Walzkräften das Oberteil elastisch nachgibt. Deshalb ist man bestrebt, den Zylinderraum in seiner Höhe möglichst klein zu halten. Kleine Höhen schränken aber nicht nur den Dickenbereich des Walzgutes ein, sondern sind auch nachteilig beim Einführen des Walzgutes in den Walzspalt und anderen Arbeiten, für die eine möglichst große Durchgangsöffnung im Walzengerüst von Vorteil ist.In a known multi-roll stand of this type (DE-GM 84 03 103), each column carries a piston which can be acted upon on both sides. Um die Anstellung der Walzkraft vorzunehmen, wird in den Zylinderraum an der Unterseite des Kolbens 20 Druckmittel eingelassen. Der Druck dieses Druckmittels ist im Vergleich zu dem Druck des im darüberliegenden Zylinderraum anstehenden Druckmittels gering.
