Definitions

  • the invention relates to an electrical connector whose sealing must be able to be maintained even if it remains immersed in aggressive liquids, possibly at high temperature or at high pressure and for periods which can be quite long.
  • FR-A-1 204 000 describes a sealed connector, the male and female parts of which have flat faces between which an elastic seal is pressed.
  • a connector of the type comprising a male part consisting of a pin and a female part consisting of a socket into which the pin penetrates by translation has been chosen to achieve these objectives.
  • the electrical contacts are axially spaced on the two parts.
  • the connector is characterized by two abutment surfaces located on the male part and the female part, respectively in the form of a portion of a sphere and of a straight cone and the contact of which easily ensures sealing, and by two threaded portions also located on the parts male and female and which allow them to be screwed together.
  • the abutment surfaces are profiled so as to present a linear and circumferential mutual contact area at the connection. Contact with these surfaces prevents accidental unscrewing of the connector.
  • the abutment surface of the female part is advantageously located at the end of the socket to form a funnel which facilitates the introduction of the spindle. It is also advantageous for the threaded portion integral with the male part to be disposed on a sheath surrounding a part of the spindle which carries the abutment surface.
  • the female part referenced by 1 in FIG. 1, comprises a socket 2 provided at one end with a mouth 3 in the form of a straight cone and which opens into a recess 4 contained in the socket 2 and which crosses the latter along of its axis X.
  • the mouth 3 is narrowed towards the recess 4 and therefore constitutes a funnel.
  • On the external contour of the sleeve 2, near the mouth 3, have been established side by side a thread 5 and a hexagonal external contour 6 that a key can grasp.
  • the electrical contacts are located in the recess 4 between a shoulder 7 and a bottom 8, opposite the mouth 3 and through which the electrical connections to the female part pass.
  • thermocouple 9 crosses the bottom 8 and extends, externally to the female part 1, in a cladding 10 of a nuclear fuel rod, the end of which is fixed (possibly by means of a diffused junction not shown) at the bottom 8: such an apparatus therefore makes it possible to measure in service the temperature at the heart of the reactor fuel, but other uses of the connector remain possible.
  • a cylindrical and insulating case 16 is arranged around the rings 12 and 14 and isolates them from the socket 2, which is made of stainless steel.
  • An insulating pin 17 crosses parallel to the axis X the bottom 8, the rings 12 and 14 and the stacks of washers 11, 13 and 15 in order to prevent these various parts from rotating during the insertion of the connector.
  • thermocouple 9 connects the thermocouple 9 to the positive contact ring 14 for one, to the negative contact ring 12 for the other. For this, they are passed through holes in the third stack 15 and, for the second, through a hole in the positive contact ring 14 with an insulating filling and in the second stack 13. These various holes are not however not shown.
  • the internal faces of the rings 12 and 14 can carry chamfers 19 both towards the mouth 3 and towards the bottom 8. Furthermore, it can be seen in FIG. 3 that the negative contact ring 12 is constituted by two half-rings 12a and 12b, the first of which, pierced by the pin 17, is fixed in the socket 2, while the other 12b is pushed back towards the preceding half-ring 12a by a spring 20 which is supported on the case 16. Although not shown, the positive contact ring 14 is identical. These provisions ensure correct application of the rings 12 and 14 against the contacts of the male part, without play and without tilting of the half-rings. Finally, the internal surface 21 of the sleeve 2, between the mouth 3 and the shoulder 7, is smooth and cylindrical.
  • the male part 25 comprises, as can be seen in FIG. 2, a sheath 26 of stainless steel which contains a recess 27 and at one end of which is disposed a bottom 28 through which an electric cable 29 passes.
  • the other end of the sheath is widened and carries a thread 30.
  • a pin 31, located in the recess 27, protrudes from the 'enlarged end of the sleeve 26 and rests on a shoulder 32 thereof.
  • a hexagonal outer contour 43 analogous to that of the female part (reference 6) can be provided on the bottom 28 to allow gripping by telemanipulation.
  • the pin 31 consists essentially of cylindrical parts coaxial with the axis Y of the male part 25 and more precisely of a positive contact constituted by a rod 33 which ends on the outside by an open end 34, of a contact negative 35 tubular arranged around the rod 33 and shorter than the latter, a first insulating case 36 which separates the rod 33 from the tube 35, a second insulating case 37 around the negative contact 35 and a sleeve 38 made of stainless steel which surrounds the second insulating case 37.
  • the sleeve 38 includes an outer cylindrical end 39 which extends a widening 40 in the portion of a sphere and which is therefore limited by a convex abutment surface.
  • An insulating pin 45 extends diametrically in the spindle 31 to prevent displacement of the rod 33, the negative contact 35, the cases 36 and 37 and the sleeve 38. Electric wires 41 in the recess 27, between the spindle 31 and the bottom 28, connect the positive and negative contacts to the cable 29.
  • An insulating spacer 42 separates in the direction of the Y axis the thick end 34 of the negative contact 35. Furthermore, the open end 34 ends on a chamfer 44.
  • connection can be made by entering the hexagonal parts 6 and 43 of the female parts 1 and male 25 by two telemanipulated clamps.
  • the open end 34 is made to penetrate into the mouth 3 and then into the recess 4 by a translational movement along the axes X and Y. This operation is easily done thanks to the funnel shape of the mouth 3 and to the chamfer 44.
  • Full centering is carried out when the outer end 39 of the centering sleeve 38 engages on the internal surface 21 of the sleeve 2.
  • the positive and negative contacts are then introduced into the rings 12 and 14, moving their half apart -rings.
  • thermocouple which represents only one particular application of the invention
  • the contacts would advantageously be made of thermoelectric alloys.
  • connectors according to the invention having three aligned contacts (or more).
