Definitions

  • the invention relates to a procedure for the intermittent performance of an after treatment of a strip, according to which the strip is moved intermittently in its longitudinal direction in relation to an instrument and between two successive movements and therefore with stationary strip in relation to the instrument, the after treatment is performed by pushing the strip against the instrument with a pressure wheel, that is moved in the transverse direction of the strip and opposite the instrument.
  • the purpose of the invention is to remedy these disadvantages and to provide a procedure for the intermittent performance of an after treatment of a strip of the aforementioned type, whereby the wear of the tool is minimal and whereby, when the after treatment is a printing process, a sharp finish can be obtained.
  • the strip is pressed with the pressure wheel against the instrument by means of an at least relatively hard band which at least during the after treatment is held stationary in relation to the instrument.
  • At least relatively hard is meant sufficiently hard in order to transfer sufficient pressure from the pressure wheel onto the strip and in order therefore to be able to press this strip sufficiently hard against the instrument to perform the after treatment. Through the fact that for the after treatment no moving organ comes against the instrument, the wear thereof is minimal.
  • a perforation in the transverse direction of the strip can be performed whereby therefore a knife is utilised as instrument or perform printing whereby a printing device is utilised as instrument.
  • the invention also relates to a device which is particularly suitable for the performance of the procedure according to one of the aforementioned embodiments.
  • the invention therefore also relates to a device for the intermittent performance of an after treatment of a strip, which device includes a frame, an instrument mounted thereon for the performance of the after treatment, means for moving the strip intermittently in its longitudinal direction over this instrument, a pressure wheel that is transversely movable to the direction of movement of the strip and opposite the instrument in order, at least with a part of its movement to press the strip against the instrument, and means for moving the pressure wheel and of which the characteristic consists in that the device includes a relatively hard band opposite the instrument which is mounted on the frame and at least there where the pressure wheel has to press the strip against the instrument during the after treatment, extends in the direction of movement of the pressure wheel between this pressure wheel and the location of the strip.
  • the instrument can be a perforation knife or a printing device with a printing head and an ink supplying mechanism.
  • the printing head can have moving parts and for example form a numerator.
  • the at least relatively hard band is manufactured in hard steel.
  • this relatively hard band is a stiff slat.
  • the device according to figures 1 and 2 is a device for the perforation of a strip 1 of paper in the transverse direction which can consist of one or more layers.
  • This strip 1 serves for making chain forms and is in the usual manner provided with holes 2 close to its longitudinal edges.
  • the strip 1 can be already printed or otherwise.
  • the device contains a frame 3 on which a number of pin feed tractors 4 are mounted of which the pins works together with holes 2 in order to move the strip 1 in the usual manner in its longitudinal direction, indicated by the arrow 5 in figure 1.
  • the pin feed tractors 4 are operated synchronously in the following described manner so that the strip 1 is intermittently moved. Between two successive movements of the strip 1 the perforation is applied in the transverse direction of the strip.
  • the device contains, on the one hand, a perforation knife 6 and on the other hand, a movable pressure wheel 7 over that.
  • the toothed perforation knife 6 is detachably mounted to the frame 3 by its extremity and extends transversely in the direction of movement of the strip 1 indicated by arrow 5.
  • the pressure wheel 7 is moved opposite the toothed edge of the knife 6 by means of a continuous belt 8 which runs over two belt pulleys 9 and 10 which are mounted rotatably on both sides onto the frame 3 around the shafts which are directed transverse to the direction of movement of the pressure wheel 7.
  • the belt pulley 9 is freely rotating while the belt pulley 10 is driven by an electric motor 11.
  • the pressure wheel 7 is by means of the shaft 12 mounted on a bearing in a support 13 that is attached to the belt 8.
  • the motor 11 continually drives the belt pulley 10 and therefore the continuous belt 8.
  • the perforation takes place when the pressure wheel 7 connected to the belt 8 moves transversely over the strip 1 from one longitudinal edge to the other.
  • a photoelectric cell 17 is mounted on the frame 3.
  • this photoelectric cell 17 detects the arrival of the pressure wheel 7 it commands the commencement of the pin feed tractors 4 which, while the pressure wheel 7 is moved further back over the top of the continuous belt 8 toward the first mentioned edge, drive the strip 1 for a well defined time. This strip is moved till the place where the following perforation must be applied which is situated under the continuous belt 8.
  • Characteristic for the invention is the presence of a hard steel slat 14 which extends over the entire length of the knife 6, at a small distance from the toothed cutting edge of the knife 6, against the pressure wheel 7 and is attached to the frame 3 with its extremities.
  • the strip 1 is moved between this slat 14 and the knife 6.
  • the pressure wheel 7 therefore does not come into direct contact with the strip 1 or the knife 6 but presses indirectly on the strip 1 by means of the slat 14. It is therefore this stationary slat 14 which comes against the knife during the perforation and no longer the moving pressure wheel 7, while the possible slipping of the pressure wheel 7 over the slat 14 occurs so that the wear of the knife 6 is minimal.
  • the embodiment according to figure 3 differs only from the embodiment according to figures 1 and 2 in that the perforation knife 6 is replaced by a printing device consisting of a printing head 15 and a printing ribbon 16.
  • the printing head 15 is mounted on a frame 3 on the side of the slat 14 away from the pressure wheel 7.
  • This printing head 15 can possibly include moving parts and can for example an instrument for numbering.
  • the printing ribbon 16 serves for applying the ink and is stretched over the actual printing block of the printing head 15 between two rollers 18 mounted on the frame 3.
  • the strip 1 is moved between the slat 14 and the printing ribbon 16 with the side to be printed of course directed toward the printing device 15, 16. With each printing operation with stationary strip 1 the pressure wheel 7 is moved over the printing device 15, 16 by means of the belt 8.
  • This pressure wheel 7 presses the strip 1 against the ribbon 16 and the printing head 15 by means of the hard metal slat 14 through which a very sharp print can be obtained. For certain applications this is essential for example for the application of account numbers on cheques which are made as chain forms. Wear of the printing device is also minimal here.
  • the band by means of which the pressure wheel presses the strip against the instrument, need not necessarily be a hard steel slat. Any band at all can be utilised which is sufficiently hard in order to transfer the pressure of the pressure wheel onto the strip. Though it is essential that this band is stationary during the after treatment of the strip.
  • This after treatment need also not necessarily be a perforation or printing.
  • Other after treatments can possibly performed such as for example gluing, insofar use is made thereby of a pressure wheel that is moved over an instrument in the transverse direction of the strip.
  • the continuous belt need not necessarily be driven continually. It can also be driven intermittently, for example backward and forward. In the last case the pressure wheel is therefore moved backward and forward whereby for example until one perforation can be performed with the forward movement and the following with the backward movement.
