Abstract

This device is intended for a percussive tool whose handle comprises a so-called straight end, that is to say formed from a conical section of slight conicity capable of being fitted tightly into the biconical hole of the rough forged tool. It is of the type constituted by a ring of elastic material. According to the invention, the ring is made from flexible and deformable material, and is fitted with elastic tightness on the conical section (5) alone of the end of the handle in such a way that, after fitting on the tool and adjustment of the longitudinal position of this ring, an adjustment resulting in a radial deformation of the latter and an increase of its elastic tightening on the handle, its upper face is in contact with the lower face (3a) of the percussive tool (3).

Description

It is known that the majority of industrial accidents caused by hand tools are caused by striking tools, either due to improper use, or to a break or separation of the handle with the tool.

If the problems of connection of the handle with the mass are now perfectly solved, for example by using metallic wedges of coincidence and a synthetic resin for filling the eye to prevent the desication of the handle, no solution has been found to this day to protect the wooden handle to prevent it from breaking or deteriorating. However, it is not uncommon, for example with a hammer, that when trying to strike a tool, such as a spindle, the user has little control over the mass path and strikes the spindle with the top of the handle , at the base of the mass, instead of striking with the mass. The repetition of such incidents breaks the constituent fibers of the handle and promotes its subsequent rupture. Finally, in certain activities, it is customary to drive in parts that are being adjusted by striking them, not with the mass, but with the foot of the handle so as not to damage these parts. This technique has the drawback, if the impacted part resists sinking, of favoring the separation of the fibers of the foot, and of forming wooden scales which can injure the user.

There is already known a protective device using a ring, metallic or elastic synthetic material, engaged in the eye of the mass and in which the handle is fitted. Such a ring, the function of which is to increase the fitting length, is expensive to produce and increases the cost of assembly. In some cases, and in particular in DE-A-1 301 779, it requires the eye of the mass and the handle to be produced with shapes and dimensions different from those standardized, which increases the manufacturing cost. As a result, this device is limited in its application to hammers of low height, such as locksmith hammers of the German type and to hammers working as a nail puller, such as bourgeois hammers.

The object of the present invention is to remedy these disadvantages by providing a protection device avoiding any accidental deterioration of a wooden handle which is inexpensive to produce, to put in place and applicable to all handles, and to all striking tools without any modification thereof.

According to the invention, the ring is made of flexible and deformable material, and is mounted with elastic clamping on the only conical part of the end of the handle, so that after fitting on the tool and adjusting the longitudinal position of this ring, adjustment resulting in a radial deformation of the latter and an increase in its elastic tightening on the handle, its upper face being in contact with the lower face of the striking tool.

This ring, which is mounted on the handle before engagement of the latter in the eye of the striking tool, is definitively positioned and linked by tightening, during assembly of the striking tool on the handle, and therefore comes perfectly in contact with the underside of this tool. Under these conditions, if the user has poor control over the path of his tool and strikes with the part of the handle juxtaposed with the tool, the striking force is largely absorbed by the ring, which avoids damaging the fibers. wood constituting the underlying handle.

In a preferred embodiment, the ring comprises, in its part coming against the underside of the tool, a flared collar.

This collar forms a ramp which, in contact with an external surface, displaces the hammer longitudinally and therefore moves the impact receiving region away from the embedding of the handle in the tool.

In one embodiment of the invention, the head ring is associated with a foot ring which, made of flexible material, is fitted with elastic clamping on the foot of the handle, and is secured to a transverse protective wall giving it the shape of a headdress.

Other characteristics and advantages will emerge from the description which follows with reference to the appended schematic drawing representing two embodiments of this device within the framework of its application to a hammer handle.
  • FIG. 1 is a side view with partial section of a first embodiment of this device,
  • FIG. 2 is a side view with partial section showing the head ring when it is inserted into the hammer,
  • Figure 3 is a side view showing another embodiment of this device.

In these drawings, 2 generally designates the handle of a hammer 3. In a known manner, the handle 2 comprises, in its fitting area called "straight", a part 5 with inclined generatrices giving it a conical shape of weak taper flaring towards the body. As for the eye 6 of the mass 3 of the hammer, it has, as shown in cross section in Figure 2, a biconical shape diverging outward.

According to the invention, before it is mounted in the eye 6, the handle 2 receives, on its conical part 5, a protective ring 7 made of flexible and elastically deformable synthetic material. This ring is force fitted on it and so that its upper face 7a is substantially at the level that the lower face 3a of the mass of the hammer will occupy.

During the introduction of part 5 of the handle into the eye 6 of the hammer, raw manufacturing eye. This part shrinks locally to ensure by elastic tightening the neck-mass connection. By the longitudinal displacement of the part 5 in the eye, the face 3a comes into contact with the face 7a of the ring 7, face 7a which tends to move this ring towards the base of the handle 2 causing its radial deformation, improving the elastic clamping thereof on the handle. After placing the sealing corners and possibly a resin 8 in the upper part of the eye 6 of the hammer, the fitting is finished.

If, during the use of the hammer, the operator positions the mass 3 incorrectly relative to the tool to be struck and strikes this tool with the handle, the impact takes place in the area of the handle comprising the ring 7. This absorbs the impact energy and distributes it over a larger part of the handle, thus avoiding the deterioration of the fibers of this handle.

In the embodiment shown in Figure 1, the ring externally has a generally cylindrical shape with elliptical or oblong section. In the embodiment shown in Figure 3, it has the same shape but in addition is integral, in its part coming against the underside 3a of the mass, a flared collar 9 which improves protection in this area. In addition, by its flared shape constituting a ramp, this collar displaces the tool in the event of a strike on the handle, so that the shock zone is offset opposite the fitting zone, that is to say is offset relative to the face 3a of the tool.

As shown in FIG. 3, the protective ring 7 is advantageously used in combination with a foot ring 10 which, like it, is made of flexible and elastic material, and is fitted with elastic clamping on the foot of the handle 2. This ring is integral with a transverse wall loa, giving it the shape of a cap. The foot ring protects the foot from the handle and prevents its fibers from disintegrating and forming scales, when the operator uses this foot of the handle to strike on parts being adjusted.

Of course, the device which has been described in the case of its application to a hammer handle can be applied to any other handle of a striking tool.
