Description

The invention relates to a method of applying a coating product such as in particular a hot-melt paint powder; it relates more particularly to an improvement making it possible to reduce the time necessary to change the coating product, that is to say most often to effect a change in color of the coating product, applied electrostatically.

The invention also relates to an installation for implementing the method.

It is known that the main problem in the application of a hot-melt paint in the form of powder, lies in the relatively long time of the color change operations. Conventionally, the application of powder is done electrostatically inside a cabin in which a slight vacuum is maintained by suction. The suction means are advantageously associated with powder recovery means comprising for example a centrifugal separator, better known under the name of "cyclone", the outlet of purified air of which is connected to a finishing filter retaining the particles of powder not retained by the separator, before returning it to the atmosphere. Until now, each change of color involved cleaning the cabin and the means of suction. The greatest difficulties and loss of time are mainly caused by cleaning the cabin. In fact, the powder recovered in the separator is generally recycled. It is therefore necessary to clean very carefully all the surfaces on which the powder is likely to deposit, each time the nature and / or the color of the powder is changed, so as never to spray on the parts a mixture of several different powders. However, the projectors, their tanks and the supply ducts can be easily cleaned or changed. The cleaning of the filtration means and in particular of the separator generally poses no problem and can be carried out quickly. On the other hand, for the projection booth, no fully satisfactory solution has so far been found to rid the walls of the booth of any trace of powder. A known solution is described in PCT Application No. 87-00771. According to this document, the cabin is essentially materialized by four faces of plastic sheets, defining a kind of tunnel, supported by rollers and an internal framework. Each time the color changes, the plastic sheets are passed between the rollers and the frame so as to have a clean internal surface. However, the internal framework must be cleaned manually before unwinding of the plastic sheets and during the movement of the latter, the framework can be again soiled with powder deposited on the walls, which can then constitute a source of pollution of clean walls. The solution is therefore not entirely satisfactory and it presupposes the use of complex mechanical means. In addition, the operation is expensive, due to a certain consumption of plastic film and its implementation is delicate.

The invention provides a more economical solution and allows very rapid implementation.

The invention follows from the analysis according to which it is practically impossible to prevent by simple means the deposition of a part of the powder sprayed on the internal walls of the enclosure and that, on the other hand, any cleaning of the walls requires a long intervention (which therefore makes the installation unusable for a significant time) and the result of which is uncertain. The basic idea of the invention therefore consists in purely and simply removing the enclosure at each change of coating product and replacing it with another, corresponding to the new coating product. We therefore have a plurality of interchangeable speakers whose number corresponds to number of different coating products that may be applied. We can also have several sets of such speakers adapted to different objects.

In this spirit, the invention therefore relates to a method of applying a coating product, in particular a powder, to objects to be covered, consisting in passing such objects through an enclosure and in projecting such a coating product. characteristics given to the objects during their passage through said enclosure, characterized in that, an enclosure corresponding to a given coating product being detachably fixed to an external frame, a change of coating product comprises the operations consisting in depositing the enclosure in place and replace it with another enclosure corresponding to a new coating product chosen.

Preferably, the enclosures are made of flexible material so that they can be folded up and stored in a minimum space. The enclosure is deployed and takes its shape when it is attached to said frame, by external attachment means such as flexible links, possibly elastic.

The invention also relates to an installation for applying a coating product, characterized in that it comprises an external fixed frame and a plurality of enclosures, each enclosure being shaped and dimensioned so as to be able to be placed in said frame and attached to it to be supported by it.

The invention will be better understood and other advantages thereof will appear more clearly in the light of the following description of several embodiments in accordance with its principle, given solely by way of example and made with reference to the drawings annexed in which:
  • - Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view of an installation for applying a coating product according to the principle of the invention; and
  • - Figure 2 is a schematic perspective view of another embodiment of an enclosure usable in such an installation.

Referring more particularly to FIG. 1, the installation shown comprises a rigid, load-bearing frame 1 and an enclosure 2 made of flexible material, here made of plastic material such as polyethylene, deployed inside said frame and supported by it . In fact, the installation comprises a plurality of enclosures 2, the other enclosures each corresponding to a particular coating product, being folded and stored while waiting to be used in place of the enclosure attached to said fixed frame 1. This has approximately the shape of a rectangular parallelepiped materialized by an assembly of vertical uprights 1 a and horizontal crosspieces 1 b . These elements are advantageously made of insulating material or covered with a thick layer of insulating material. When deployed, each enclosure has a shape similar to that of the frame, but of smaller dimensions and the enclosure in use is connected to the frame by flexible links 3, in this case here elastic tensioners . These tensioners are provided with hooks 3 a which cooperate with connection rings 3 b defined or attached to selected points of the enclosure, in particular at its ends. The enclosure 2 is constituted by panels of flexible plastic material assembled together edge to edge, for example by welding. Thus, according to the example of FIG. 1, the enclosure is made up of four substantially vertical faces 2 a , 2 b , 2 c , 2 d , of two slightly inclined upper faces 2 e , 2 f and of four inclined lower faces 2 g , 2 h , 2 i , 2 d forming a hopper 10 terminated by a circular opening. Furthermore, the enclosure is provided with a wide opening 4 extending on the one hand, over its entire upper part between the faces 2 e and 2 f and extending by vertical notches on the opposite vertical faces 2 b and 2 c . This opening 4 allows the passage in translation of the objects 8 to be covered suspended from an overhead conveyor 9. The latter is arranged for transport the objects from one end to the other of the enclosure through the opening 4. This conveyor is moreover connected to the ground. At least one other opening 5 is made, here in the face 2 d of the enclosure, for the passage of an electrostatic projection device 6 carried by a back-and-forth mechanism 7, located outside and which moves it vertically so that the powder jet sweeps the entire height of the objects 8 to be covered. The opening 5 can simply consist of a simple slot cut on demand. The cut parts can advantageously form lips for partially closing the opening 5. The projection apparatus 6 is supplied with fluidized powder by a conduit 11 which is connected to a powder reservoir 12 in which the powder is kept at the fluidized state. This tank is conventional and is not part of the invention. It is mounted on casters 15 so that it can be easily moved and changed when the user decides to change the coating product. An electric generator 16 attached to the mechanism 7 supplies the projection apparatus 6 with electric energy by means of an electric cable 17. The lower opening of the hopper 10 is connected by a quick-clamping collar 21 at the end of a conduit 19 connected to suction means not shown but conventional. These suction means include in particular a centrifugal separator or "cyclone". The end of the duct 19 is fixed to the lower part of the frame by guy wires 20 or the like extending between the uprights of said frame and the end of the duct. These guys 20 advantageously constitute a horizontal support which can be used for the folding operations of the enclosure after its use.

Conventionally, air is constantly drawn into the enclosure, entraining part of the powder which is not deposited on the objects. Most of this powder is collected in the centrifugal separator and recycled to the reservoir 12. The air leaving the separator is discharged into the atmosphere after passing through a filter which retains the last particles of powder which could not be recovered in the separator. The filter is cleaned from time to time, the powder collected by it not being recycled. It is known that the separator can be cleaned very quickly and easily by a simple suction of clean air, when changing the coating product, possibly also by passing a cloth introduced into the suction means. However, when the electrostatically charged powder is sprayed onto the grounded objects 8, a part is deposited on the internal walls of the enclosure.

According to the invention, the enclosure is avoided to be cleaned at each change of coating product and the enclosure in use is replaced by another corresponding to the new coating product. Thus, if the coating products differ only in their color, the installation will include as many foldable speakers as there are colors. The operations to be carried out for the change of coating product are as follows:

Powder spraying is stopped and the mechanism 7 is immobilized in the low position. The conduit 11 is disconnected from the reservoir 12 and clean air is injected therein to clean both the conduit 11 and the projection apparatus 6. The enclosure 2 is shaken manually to drop most of the powder covering the walls in the hopper so that this powder is entrained towards the separator. The elastic tensioners 3 are then lifted, starting from the top, which allows the enclosure to be folded over the shrouds 20. The collar 21 is then opened, which completely frees the enclosure. The separator is then cleaned; these operations are conventional.

The installation is then ready to receive another enclosure 2 corresponding to the new coating product contained in another powder reservoir 12. The mounting of the new enclosure is carried out by a succession of reverse operations to those which have been described below. above.

Experience has shown that an operator can carry out all of the operations indicated above in approximately one tenth of the time necessary to clean a single fixed enclosure, while eliminating in a much safer way any risk of pollution of one coating product recovered by another. The flexible plastic enclosures are inexpensive.

The material making the enclosure will preferably be an insulating material, in order to limit the amount of powder deposited on the walls. Thus, in the event of ignition of the powder following, for example, a spark, the quantity of powder liable to ignite will be relatively small and will give off little heat. It should also be noted that the use of thin and flexible sheets also increases safety in the event of ignition of the powder because the pressure cannot rise in the enclosure due to the deformation of the walls. This eliminates any risk of explosion of said enclosure.

However, to avoid creeping discharges due to the deposition of charged particles on the walls, it can be envisaged that the internal faces of the enclosure are at least partially conductive, for example weakly metallized, and connected to the ground.

Furthermore, the material used to make the enclosure can advantageously be translucent or transparent. This can be used to place a photoelectric flame detection cell 25 or similar means outside the enclosure, preferably facing a wall of this enclosure little exposed to the coating product. Thus, the cell can be placed opposite the wall 2 e or 2 f . It should be noted that this cell, which was conventionally placed inside the enclosure, was often covered with powder and poorly fulfilled its function.

It is also possible to envisage using enclosures of different shapes corresponding to different objects to be covered, provided that the enclosures can be mounted inside the same frame with the anchoring points and the necessary attachment means.

Dans l'exemple représenté, la chambre de projection 30 comporte une ouverture 35 permettant l'accès de l'opérateur manipulant, ici, un projecteur manuel.FIG. 2 illustrates a variant of the enclosure provided with extensions extending laterally and / or at its upper part to form sorts of "airlocks". It is thus possible to limit the turbulence in the projection area and the leakage of powder particles in the room. In Figure 2, the external frame has not been shown but it is clear that the shape of this frame is adapted to the new shape of the enclosure. This breaks down into a projection chamber 30 and into two lateral chambers forming entry and exit "locks", 31, 32, which thus extend the lateral ends of the opening 4 shown in the embodiment of Figure 1. The upper part of this opening, for the passage of object supports, is also extended upwards by a longitudinal "airlock" 33. The lower parts of "airlocks 31 and 32 meet at the hopper. the example shown, the projection chamber 30 has an opening 35 allowing access for the operator handling, here, a manual projector.
