Abstract

A security element which can be embedded in a security document, in particular a commercial paper, in the form of a thread or strip is composed of two carrier foils, each of these carrier foils carrying each of the marking substances serving for detecting the authenticity. The two carrier foils are composed in such a way that the marking substances, which are to be protected from mechanical abrasion and other external influences, come to rest on the inside. The thread offers not only a special protection for the marking substances, but, due to its symmetrical construction, it can also be embedded in the paper substance easily and without showing a tendency to roll. <IMAGE>

Description

The invention relates to a security element in the form of a thread or tape for embedding in a security document, consisting of a carrier film and at least one marking substance applied thereon, e.g. B. in the form of a coating that is used for visual and / or mechanical authenticity detection and methods for manufacturing and testing the same.

It is a known measure for securing security documents to embed security elements in these documents which either have special mechanically detectable physical properties or are also designed in terms of their visual appearance in such a way that they can serve as an authenticity feature for the security document. Such security elements are such. B. threads or tapes that are embedded directly in the paper layer still forming in the context of paper production.

Such a security thread is e.g. B. from DE-OS 27 54 267, wherein a carrier film made of polyester or cellulose is coated with different materials. As visually and / or machine-readable authenticity features serve z. B. an aluminum vapor deposition, a magnetic coating, a coating with X-ray absorbing material and / or a luminescent material.

In this document, various structures of such security threads are shown, which differ in the layer arrangement and / or the materials used. However, all the examples shown there have at least one, usually even several of the disadvantages shown below.

So bilden z. So z. B. the layer materials susceptible to mechanical abrasion and atmospheric influences, such as. B. the metal coating, usually the outside of the thread. However, the metallic coating can be easily destroyed by mechanical loads during the production of the thread, and even in later use it is often the case that the metallic coating loses its originally high-gloss property and becomes matt over time. In serious cases, the metallic layer can also be completely interrupted, as a result of which the security thread loses not only its reflective property but also its mechanically verifiable electrical conductivity over the entire length of the thread.

Furthermore, the structure is mostly asymmetrical and this asymmetry leads to the curl of the thread and the formation of garlands. The thread can therefore not be embedded in the fiber layer of a forming paper layer with the same flatness. The areas of the paper web in which the security thread does not come to lie in the plane of the paper layer must then be separated out as unusable. This committee makes paper production more expensive.

Finally, manufacturing errors in the coating process cannot be ruled out. So it can e.g. B. come to strong fluctuations in layer thickness and also complete interruptions in the coating. Such interruptions in a z. B. metallic layer but lead to the interruption of electrical conductivity. These security documents must also be discarded in advance as a committee, since due to these irregularities the authenticity check is no longer clear.

The invention is based on the object of creating a security element which, while avoiding the above-mentioned. Disadvantages can be easily produced and embedded in a security document.

This object is achieved by the features given in the characterizing part of the main claim. A method for producing such security elements is the subject of a subordinate claim.

The composition of the security thread according to the invention from two foils pretreated in the same way gives the thread a completely symmetrical structure. The two carrier films are preferably obtained from the same film, in which a larger film web is first provided, the corresponding coatings are provided in a coating system, the film web is then cut into two longitudinal webs and these longitudinal webs are overlaid and connected to one another in the form according to the invention. This also avoids fluctuations that could arise from the production of the film webs in two different production processes.

The security thread, which is pulled off a roll during paper production and is guided to the paper screen at a predetermined position in the pulp, maintains its position via this path, in which it is guided freely, without rotating about its longitudinal axis. The reject which arises in the case of threads with an asymmetrical structure due to the flatness of the thread being flat in the paper plane can thereby be avoided.

By shifting the sensitive layers into the inner areas of the security thread, materials can now also be used that are used in the prior art because of their exposed position and the lack of them Environmental resistance can practically not be used.

In addition, each layer containing a marking substance is present twice. The absence of a marking substance in one layer does not lead to a total loss of the authenticity feature, unless the unlikely event occurs that the substance is also missing at the same location in the opposite layer. In this case, the amount of substance is only half as large, but this reduction in the amount can easily be compensated for by appropriate design of the detection apparatus.

The two carrier foils are generally connected to one another by means of an adhesive layer, suitable adhesives being selected depending on the circumstances. Are z. B. the two inner layers of metal layers and if the authenticity is to be verified by checking the electrical conductivity, an adhesive material is preferably used which is permeated with electrically conductive pigments. These electrically conductive pigments electrically connect the two metal layers to one another. If there is a break in the metal layer during the manufacture of the film or when the security thread is embedded in the paper, the adhesive layer serves as a bridging element to maintain the electrical connection over the entire length of the security element.

While a magnetic layer as an abrasion-sensitive layer is preferably shifted inwards, resistant coatings, such as, for example, B. a layer of paint or a layer of paint, can also be applied to the outside of the plastic layer, in addition, plastic surfaces can usually be printed better than z. B. metallic surfaces.

The internal coatings can be made thin, since they are now adequately protected against mechanical loads by the outer plastic films.

In a preferred embodiment, the metallic layer is first applied during the production of the carrier foils and the magnetic layer is only applied to this metallic layer. The metallic reflective layer thus covers the magnetic layer, which has a black or brown intrinsic color, after the two foils have been superimposed. This thread can then also be stored in the printed image area of the security document, since the thread cannot be recognized or can only be recognized as a faintly bright area due to its reflecting surface in incident light and thus does not disturb the visual impression of the printed image. Only when viewed in transmitted light can this thread be recognized as a dark stripe in the paper. These differences in reflected and transmitted light viewing are also a simple means of distinguishing the document from a copy.

Der Faden zeigt also trotz seiner exponierten Lage keine Abnutzungserscheinungen. However, the security threads can also be embedded in the document by methods known per se so that they appear on the surface in places. This is a particular advantage of the invention. Due to the exposed position of the security thread on the document surface, it is exposed to special mechanical loads due to daily use. In the security thread according to the invention, however, plastic layers which are resistant to mechanical and chemical influences, such as, for. B. polyester films, the outer layers that protect the sensitive feature layers. In spite of its exposed position, the thread shows no signs of wear.

The double presence of a marking substance can advantageously be used for authenticity testing in the case of the metallic or electrically conductive coating.

In the known security threads, which only contain an electrically conductive layer, cracks in the metal coating lead to the conductivity being interrupted. The non-contact detection of conductivity by means of known methods (DE-PS 17 74 209) therefore led to a negative result. In the solution according to the invention, two conductive layers are now capacitively coupled, which are capacitively coupled by a non-conductive layer (plastic film, adhesive layer, etc.), forming a dielectric. If cracks now appear in the metal layers, the metal layers interrupted by these cracks with the dielectric in between act like capacitors connected in series. This maintains an alternating current conductivity if it can be assumed that both metal layers are not completely interrupted at the same point on the thread. If one measures this AC conductivity by means of capacitive measuring methods known per se, then even in the case of one or more breaks in one or both metal coatings, it can be concluded that two electrically conductive layers are present and this characteristic serving for authenticity detection can be clearly established.

Further advantages and advantageous developments result from the description of preferred embodiments of the invention with reference to the figures.

  • Fig. 3 eine schematische Darstellung zum Herstellungsverfahren.
The figures show:
  • 1 and 2 cross-sectional views of various embodiments of Si according to the invention security elements,
  • Fig. 3 is a schematic representation of the manufacturing process.

The carrier films are the two outer, transparent plastic films 2, 3, preferably made of polyester. Each of these plastic films is provided on its inner side with a metal coating 4, 5. For this purpose, the films are coated with an aluminum, nickel or even chrome layer by means of suitable coating processes (vapor deposition, spraying, sputtering, etc.). The layer thickness is usually far below 1 µ. After their coating, these two carrier foils are connected via an adhesive layer 6. Suitable adhesives are e.g. B. laminating glue, which are activated by heating over a certain temperature range, or polymerisation glue, which harden when heated and / or UV irradiated.

Due to its metallic coating, this thread has highly reflective properties and is therefore only recognizable as a dark stripe in transmitted light, since when viewed in incident light, the light reflected by the thread is scattered through the paper layer above it. Thanks to the outer polyester films, the thread is resistant to a large number of chemical solvents and also fulfills the required conditions such as high flexibility and tear resistance due to the excellent mechanical properties of polyester.

Die Klebeschicht ist auf eine gute Verbindung der hier innenliegenden Magnetschichten abzustimmen.2 shows a thread in which - again between two polyester films 8, 9 - the layer materials used for authenticity detection are embedded. Each of these foils was first covered with a metallic one Coating 10, 11 provided and a magnetic layer 12, 13 is applied to this metallic coating. Suitable magnetic materials or coating materials are known from DE-PS 16 69 245. Here too, both of the carrier foils are overlaid with their coated side facing inwards and connected to one another with the aid of an adhesive layer 14. The adhesive layer has to be coordinated with a good connection of the magnetic layers inside.

In some cases, in particular if several layers are to be contained in the security thread, the films can also be coated on both sides. In this case, at least one of the layer materials then comes to the outside. Materials that withstand the chemical and mechanical loads must therefore be selected for these outer layers 15. It can be z. B. is a full-surface paint coating that has a certain color or luminescent properties. However, a pattern or alphanumeric characters can also be partially printed on, which can be read directly or with the aid of appropriate magnification devices. Since the threads usually have a width of 0.5 mm to max. 1.5 mm are required for printing the thread with characters of this size, complex printing techniques and corresponding devices, whereby the thread gains additional security against counterfeiting.

The two carrier foils from which the security thread according to the invention is composed are preferably obtained from a single foil which is provided with the desired layers on one or both sides in advance. The side of the film that carries the later internal coatings is additionally provided with an adhesive surface. By folding the film or cutting and overlaying the two web halves accordingly created the desired double-layer film. For a firm connection of the two foils, these can be filled by a roller laminating system known per se (FIG. 3). In this system, the films 2, 3 with the z. B. metallic coating 4, 5 superimposed facing each other and brought to a temperature at which the adhesive 6 is activated via heating rollers 22, infrared or radio frequency. After passing through two press rolls 23 and subsequent cooling, the two foils are firmly connected to one another and can be cut into individual strips of the desired width in a corresponding cutting system.
