Claims (10)

Method of adjusting a preselected cleaning width (bsp) of a cylindrical brush (14) revolving about an axis for cleaning surfaces, such as roads, taxiing areas on aerodromes or the like, wherein the distance between the axis (12) and the surface to be cleaned is modified for adjusting the cleaning width (bsp), and wherein the cylinder diameter is detected by means of a sensor device (18), in that a sensing body (22) is brought into contact with the cylindrical surface (20) of the cylindrical brush (14), characterized in that the sensing body (22), at predetermined intervals of time, is first advanced towards the cylindrical brush (14) until the contact with the cylindrical surface (20) of the cylindrical brush (14) is indicated by the modified signal of an acceleration pick-up (30), that the advance movement is then interrupted and the distance travelled by the sensing body (22) is measured and that, from the distance travelled, the cylinder diameter is determined at selectable measuring positions.
  2. Method according to Claim 1, characterized in that the cylinder diameter is determined at two different measuring positions of the surface of the cylindrical brush.
  3. Method according to Claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the contact with the cylindrical surface of the cylindrical brush is determined by changes in conducted sound.
  4. Method according to one or more of Claims 1 to 3, characterized in that the rotational speed of the cylindrical brush is regulated as a function of the cylinder diameter to achieve a constant circumferential speed.

  7. Apparatus according to Claim 5 or 6, characterized in that at least two sensor devices (18) are disposed at different measuring positions (a, b) of the cylindrical surface (20) of the cylindrical brush (14).
  8. Apparatus according to one of Claims 5 to 7, characterized in that the sensor device (18) is traversable parallel to the axis of the cylindrical brush (14) to different measuring positions (a, b).
  9. Apparatus according to one or more of Claims 5 to 8, characterized in that the acceleration pick-up (30) is constructed as a conducted sound receiver.
  10.
