Koaxialkabel mit Schirmelektrode zur Verwendung als Ionisationskammer Coaxial cable with shield electrode for use as an ionization chamber
The invention relates to a coaxial cable for use as an ionization chamber with a signal electrode, a high-voltage electrode concentrically surrounding the signal electrode and an insulator which keeps the high-voltage electrode at a distance from the signal electrode.
It is already known (cf. F. Hornstra in Nuclear Instruments and Methods, 128, pages 435 to 440 from 1975) to improvise ionization chambers simply by means of coaxial cables in which a signal electrode in the form of a copper wire or a copper rod of one High voltage electrode is surrounded concentrically. The distance between the central signal electrode and the concentric outer high-voltage electrode is kept constant by an insulator which, for example, consists of a coil made of a plastic such as polyethylene or polypropylene. The dielectric between the signal electrode and the high-voltage electrode is usually air, but a test gas such as argon or a neon-helium mixture can also be used instead of air. During operation, the high-voltage electrode is set to a voltage of several hundred volts, as a result of which ions which arise in the annular space formed between the signal electrode and the high-voltage electrode are accelerated in the direction of the signal electrode and generate a signal current there.
A disadvantage of these ionization chambers is that a leakage current always flows from the high-voltage electrode to the signal electrode, both through the insulator as a volume flow and along its surface. These leakage currents increase with increasing cable length and with increasing high voltage and falsify the signal current. This can lead to the leakage currents come in the order of magnitude of the signal currents, so that the measurement with the ionization chamber then becomes ever more faulty and may even become impermissible.
It is an object of the invention to improve the coaxial cable of the type mentioned in the introduction such that no leakage currents flow from the high-voltage electrode to the signal electrode.
To solve this problem, the coaxial cable is characterized in that the insulator has a shield electrode which extends along the entire length of the coaxial cable over its entire cross section. During operation, the shield electrode is connected to earth and thereby leads leakage currents both from the surface and from the inside of the insulator before they reach the signal electrode. As a result, the ionization chamber can also be operated with larger lengths and higher voltages for smaller signal currents.
Advantageous refinements of the invention result from the subclaims.

Seine Höhe entspricht dem radialen Abstand von der Signalelektrode 1 zur Hochspannungselektrode 2.25 miger insulator 3 ago, which helically surrounds the signal electrode 1 over the entire length of the coaxial cable. In one embodiment, the insulator 3 has a uniform cross section. Its height corresponds to the radial distance from the signal electrode 1 to the high-voltage electrode 2.

Dabei ist das Ziel,According to FIG. 2, the width of the insulator 3 is a fraction of its height, the dimensions being freely selectable for the person skilled in the art and being dictated exclusively by strength and stability conditions. The goal is
35 möglichst wenig Raum zwischen der Signalelektrode 1 und
der Hochspannungselektrode 2 mit Isolator 3 zu füllen, weil dieser Anteil als Ionisationsraum verloren geht.35 as little space as possible between the signal electrode 1 and to fill the high-voltage electrode 2 with insulator 3 because this portion is lost as an ionization space.
The inner signal electrode 1 is, for example, a copper wire or a copper rod, although of course any other conductive material is also possible. The surrounding high-voltage electrode 2 is usually a tube which, in the case of larger diameters, can also be a corrugated tube for reasons of strength. The outside diameter of such coaxial cables is usually between 20 and 200 mm. It is clear, however, that special designs can also deviate from these areas.
In the figures, the inner electrode is referred to as signal electrode 1 and the outer electrode as high-voltage electrode 2. However, it is clear to the person skilled in the art that the situation can also be reversed, namely that the inner electrode can be connected as a high-voltage electrode and the outer electrode as a signal electrode.
It is also pointed out that any insulating material, preferably ceramic or plastic and in particular radiation-resistant plastic, can be used as the material for the insulator 3. Examples of this are polyethylene, polypropylene and, in a particularly preferred manner, polyimide.
Hochspannungselektrode 2 gelegte Hochspannung liegt übli¬ cherweise im Bereich von 200 bis 1500 Volt.FIG. 3 shows the sectional view of FIG. 2 in an enlarged representation, in which surface leakage currents on the insulator 3 are indicated by wavy lines. It can be clearly seen in this illustration that a shield electrode 4 is embedded in the insulator 3, which extends over the entire cross section of the insulator 3 and which is in the vicinity of the signal electrode 1. The to the High voltage electrode 2 is usually in the range from 200 to 1500 volts.
Man erkennt in dieser Figur außerdem, wie sich die Schirmelektrode 4 zusammen mit dem Isolator 3 schraubenförmig um die Signalelektrode 1 windet.FIG. 4 shows another embodiment of the invention, in which the high-voltage electrode 2 is additionally surrounded by a protective conductor 5. This protective conductor 5 is intended to protect the high-voltage electrode 2, which is usually covered on the outside by an insulating jacket, from touching should the insulating jacket (not shown) be damaged. It can also be seen in this figure how the shield electrode 4 winds helically around the signal electrode 1 together with the insulator 3.
Dieser Isolator besteht beispielsweise aus dem gleichen Material wie der wendeiförmige Isolator 3.FIG. 5 shows a section along the line A-A of FIG. 4, the position of the shield electrode 4 in the vicinity of the signal electrode 1 and the spacing of the high-voltage electrode 2 from the protective conductor 5 also being clearly visible. The protective conductor 5 concentrically surrounds the high-voltage electrode 2 and is also kept at a distance from the latter by an insulator. This insulator consists, for example, of the same material as the helical insulator 3.
FIG. 6 shows an exemplary embodiment modified compared to FIG. 4, in which the shield electrode 4 is not arranged in the vicinity of the signal electrode 1, but in the vicinity of the high-voltage electrode 2. In this exemplary embodiment, however, it is expedient to connect the high voltage to the central electrode 1 and the virtual ground of the ionization chamber to the outer electrode 2. The signal electrode 1 thus becomes the high voltage electrode and the high voltage electrode 2 the signal electrode trode. FIGS. 8 and 9 show a further exemplary embodiment in which two shield electrodes 4 are provided in the helical insulator 3, one in the vicinity of the central signal electrode 1 and the other in the vicinity of the surrounding high-voltage electrode 2. It is It is clear that the voltage ratios can also be reversed in this exemplary embodiment, ie since the signal electrode 1 can become the high-voltage electrode and the high-voltage electrode 2 can become the signal electrode.
