  • the proportion of aggregate in the material may be from 40 to 60% although proportions outside this range may be used, depending upon the particular application and the amount of fine grained filler, if any, in the rubberised bitumen.
  • the proportion of aggregate in the material is approximately 50% by weight.

  • the sandwich "filling" comprises a membrane or layer of bitumen containing the chopped rubber pieces and metal fibre or wire. This "filling" may, or may not, contain aggregate depending upon the degree of resilience required, and provides for good non-cracking load transfer from an overlying top layer to the underlying support or base surface.

  • a particular advantage of the present material is that it can very readily be made simply by chopping up old wire reinforced vehicle tyres.
  • modern radial tyres contain a substantial amount of metal reinforcement which conventionally is very difficult to separate reliably from the rubber in order to use the rubber for other purposes, for example broken down to a small particle-sized crumb for use in conventional rubberised bitumen.
  • the material of the present invention requires far less breaking down of the tyres in view of the relatively large rubber chip size.
  • the inclusion of the metal of the tyre reinforcement randomly bound to or, more usually, separated from the rubber chips provides what appears to be an ideal road construction material where it is important to prevent the transmission of reflective cracks.
  • the twisted tensile cables are chopped and rapidly unravelled to the very fine and flexible constituents of the cable. Due to this fineness and flexibility most of the metal is not chopped as short as the dimensions of the rubber chips such that when the rubber is formed in 2 mm dimension chips the pieces of wire will normally have a length of from 20 to 30 mm; however due to the random nature of the chopping some of the metal lengths will be shorter, similar in length to the rubber chip dimensions or even shorter.

Claims (24)

1. Material zur Verwendung bei der Ausbesserung oder Wartung von Straßen, Parkflächen, Flugzeugrollbahnen und anderen Belastung tragenden Flächen, wobei dieses Material Gummischnitzel umfaßt, die eine maximale Abmessung von zumindest 2 mm und ein bituminöses Bindemittel aufweisen, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß Abschnitte aus Metallfaser oder Draht mit den Schnitzeln vermischt sind, die länger als die maximale Abmessung der Schnitzel sind, wobei die Gummischnitzel und die Abschnitte aus Metallfaser oder Draht über das Bindemittel miteinander verbunden sind, wobei das Bindemittel selber ein gummiertes Bitumenmaterial ist.
2. Material nach Anspruch 1, bei dem das Bitumen des gummierten Bitumen ein polymermodifiziertes Bitumen ist.
3. Material nach Anspruch 2, bei dem das bituminöse Bindemittel ein gummiertes Bitumenmaterial ist, welches 5 bis 25% Gummi umfaßt.
4. Material nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, bei dem die Metallfasern etwa 20 bis 30 mm lang sind.
5. Material nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, welches auch einen Gewichtsanteil von bis zu 5%, vorzugsweise 0,5 bis 1,5%, von Glasfasern oder anderen Fasern umfaßt.
6. Material nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, bei dem die maximalen Abmessungen der Gummischnitzel in dem Bereich von 3 bis 7 mm, vorzugsweise bei etwa 5 mm, liegen.
7. Material nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, bei dem dem bituminösen Bindemittel ein Zuschlagstoff beigemischt ist, der eine maximale Abmessung von nicht länger als 25 mm und vorzugsweise nicht länger als 5 mm aufweist.
8. Material nach Anspruch 7, bei dem der Zuschlagstoff Abmessungen aufweist, die denen der Gummischnitzel ähnlich sind.
9. Verfahren zum Ausbessern oder Herstellen von Decken von Fahrbahnen, Parkflächen, Flugzeugrollbahnen und anderen Belastung tragenden Flächen, in dem ein heißes Material auf die Fläche aufgebracht wird, wobei es sich bei dem Material um das in den vorhergehenden Ansprüchen beanspruchte handelt.
10. Verfahren nach Anspruch 9, in dem das Material nur auf eingegrenzte beschädigte Abschnitte der Fläche aufgebracht wird.
11. Verfahren nach Anspruch 9, in dem das Material in Form einer kontinuierlichen Schicht über der ganzen Fläche aufgebracht wird.
12. Verfahren nach Anspruch 10 oder 11, in dem ein den Verkehr tragender abdeckender Überzug sequentiell auf die Fläche aufgebracht ist.
13. Verfahren zur Bildung einer Brückenverbindungsstelle oder Dehnungsfuge, in dem das in einem der Anspüche 1 bis 6 beanspruchte Material auf eine Ritze aufgebracht wird, die sich über die Verbindungsstelle an der Brücke oder einer anderen Struktur erstreckt.
14. Verfahren nach Anspruch 13, in dem das Material an Ort und Stelle heiß aufgebracht und gewalzt wird.
15. Verfahren nach Anspruch 13, in dem das Material als vorgeformter Streifen in die Ritze eingebracht wird, wobei die Ritze auf die passende Größe zur Aufnahme des Streifens geschnitten worden ist.
16. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 13 bis 15, in dem die Gummischnitzel eine maximale Abmessung von bis zu 20 mm aufweisen.
17. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 13 bis 16, in dem eine den Verkehr tragende Deckschicht über dem Material der Verbindungsstelle und über der Struktur auf jeder Seite davon vorgesehen ist, in der die Ritze ausgebildet ist.
18. Verfahren nach Anspruch 12 oder 17, in dem die Deckschicht in Form einer Mischung aus bituminösem Bindemittelmaterial, Gummischnitzeln und Metallfaser oder Draht aufgebracht wird.
19. Verfahren nach Anspruch 12 oder 17, in dem die Deckschicht durch Ausbreiten einer Schicht von bituminösem Bindemittelmaterial über der gefüllten Ritze und der benachbarten Oberfläche, durch Verteilen einer Mischung aus Gummischnitzeln und Metallfaser oder Draht über das Bindemittelmaterial und durch Einwalzen der Gummischnitzel und des Metalls in das Bindemittelmaterial zur Verbindung damit aufgebracht wird.
20. Verfahren nach Anspruch 19, in dem dem bituminösen Bindemittelmaterial selber vor dem Auftragen auf die Fläche Gummischnitzel und Metallfaser oder Draht beigemischt werden.
21. Verfahren nach Anspruch 19 oder 20, in dem ein Zuschlagstoff hinzugefügt wird, indem er über dem bituminösen Bindemittelmaterial verteilt und dort zusammen mit den Gummischnitzeln und dem Metall hineingewalzt wird.
22. Verfahren nach Anspruch 12 oder 17, in dem die Deckschicht ein Schwarzdeckenüberzug von einer Dicke von zumindest 30 mm ist.
23. Verfahren nach Anspruch 12 oder 17, in dem der Decküberzug eine bituminöse Schicht umfaßt, die mit Glasfasern oder anderen Fasern verstärkt und mit einer Deckschicht aus Splitt oder dergleichen versehen ist.
24. Material nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 6 oder Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 9 bis 23, in dem die Gummischnitzel und Metallfasern oder Draht durch Zerhacken von drahtverstärkten Fahrzeugreifen erhalten worden sind.
