Definitions
- the Applicant has developed retroreflective catadioptric elements ('catadioptrics') that are visible at a distance and are incorporated in the prefabricated tape. These elements are coveredby US Patent No. 4,129,397.
- the object of the present invention is an important improvement in the field of said catadioptrics, with the purpose to assure visibility at a distance over the full service life of both the tape and the road surface.
- the present invention is based on the acknowledgement that catadioptrics designed in accordance with the present state of the art, when practically positioned vertically, are within a relatively short time gathering too much dirt from the road surface, and that also an inclination of 30 is not solving this problem of dirt, because said catadioptrics do not vibrate sufficiently under the action of the traffic; in accordance with the present invention it has been found that only the vibration effect ensures the cleanness of the surface and consequently a continuous optical effect.
- the catadioptric is filled with high density foamed polymer, which will be described in detail later.
- Said foamed material has closed cells resisting to the action of the water.
- the tape which is the object of the present invention is manufactured as a integrated whole, together with the applied catadioptrics, so that it may be stored ready for the laying down on the road.
- numeral (2) shows a mould, made for example of methacrylic resin modified with copolymer elastomer; numeral (4) shows a foamed inside body which will be inserted into the mould, an example of composition of which will be specified later; numeral (6) shows a wear resistant surface film (antiscratch film) of which too an example of composition will be specified later; numeral (8) shows a retroreflecting platelet, for example the Tesalux 4635/4636 sheet, manufactured by the firm Bayersdorf of Hamburg, or the prismatic plaque manufactured by Sacex, an italian firm; numeral (10) shows an adhesive film for sticking the platelet (8) to the foamed inside body (4).
- the shoulders (12) of the mould (2) protect the retroreflecting platelets (8) from the external aggression of the traffic.
- the assembled catadioptric (14) is represented applied to the road marking tape (16), which may be, for example, the antiskid and wear- and stressresisting tape described in Applicant's Patent No. 4,146,635 (Re-issue No. 31,669).
- FIG. 3 a cross-section following III-III of FIG. 2 is shown.
- composition of the foamed inside body (4) and of the antiscratch film (6) are examples.

Abstract
Description
- The Applicant has for many years concerned himself with the proplem of horizontal road marking tapes for promoting driving safety. He is now completing the research by concentrating all his efforts in the prefabricated horzontal marking tapes sector, being convinced that in a relatively near future the vital role played by horizontal marking tapes, in prarticular as regards road safety, will become universally recognized as being indispensable.
- To this purpose, in accordance with the present invention the catadioptric is filled with high density foamed polymer, which will be described in detail later. Said foamed material has closed cells resisting to the action of the water.
- It must be put in evidence that the tape which is the object of the present invention is manufactured as a integrated whole, together with the applied catadioptrics, so that it may be stored ready for the laying down on the road.
- FIG. 1 shows an exploded view of the catadioptric following the present invention.
- FIG. 2 shows the catadioptric applied to the road marking tape.
- FIG. 3 shows a cross-section of the catadioptric.
- More in detail:
In FIG. 1, numeral (2) shows a mould, made for example of methacrylic resin modified with copolymer elastomer; numeral (4) shows a foamed inside body which will be inserted into the mould, an example of composition of which will be specified later; numeral (6) shows a wear resistant surface film (antiscratch film) of which too an example of composition will be specified later; numeral (8) shows a retroreflecting platelet, for example the Tesalux 4635/4636 sheet, manufactured by the firm Bayersdorf of Hamburg, or the prismatic plaque manufactured by Sacex, an italian firm; numeral (10) shows an adhesive film for sticking the platelet (8) to the foamed inside body (4).
The shoulders (12) of the mould (2) protect the retroreflecting platelets (8) from the external aggression of the traffic. - In FIG. 2 the assembled catadioptric (14) is represented applied to the road marking tape (16), which may be, for example, the antiskid and wear- and stressresisting tape described in Applicant's Patent No. 4,146,635 (Re-issue No. 31,669).
- In FIG. 3 a cross-section following III-III of FIG. 2 is shown.
- The following are examples of composition of the foamed inside body (4) and of the antiscratch film (6).
EXAMPLE A - Foamed inside body Polyether glendion (produced by ARCO POLYMER) 100 p. Butanediol 8 p. Water 0.3 p. Dabco (produced by AIR PRODUCT) 0.8 p. Tin octoate 0.02 p. Silicone (produced by DOW CHEMICAL) 0.7 p. Isonate (produced by DOW CHEMICAL) 42.75 p. followed by a heating phase EXAMPLE B - Wear resistant surface film - antiscratch film Diester 4184 (produced by the italian firm COIN) 64.5 p. Diester G 680 (produced as above) 34 p. Xylene 19 p. Plaster P 42 ( adipic plastifier produced by COIN) 5 p. Titanium dioxide 137 p. followed by a heating phase
