Definitions
- This invention relates to eyepiece protectors for respirators, and respirators incorporating them.
- a respirator has in its rubber face piece a transparent portion for allowing the user to see. This may be a single eyepiece extending both sides of the median plane of the respirator or may be two individual eyepieces one set at each side of the median plane.
- the present invention is concerned with providing an additional protective layer for the eyepiece of a respirator.
- the present invention is concerned with a fitting for the eyepiece of respirators which endows the protective layer with qualities of additional environmental protection for the user.
- peripheral mount for the protection layer and a peripheral mount for the window of an eyepiece are engaged together to form a continuous seal.
- a transparent protector for an eyepiece of a respirator has a substantially rigid transparent body with a periphery corresponding generally to the form of the periphery of the eyepiece which it is to protect, that periphery being received in a continuous elastomeric edge seal having on its side which is towards the respirator eyepiece in use a continuous inwardly facing channel adapted to form a snap fitting over a corresponding continuously outwardly facing rib at the periphery of the respirator eyepiece, the channel and the rib forming a snap fitting together in such a way that a portion of the resilient edge seal is tightly sandwiched between an edge portion of the protective layer and a face portion of the mounting of the eyepiece.
- the mount bearing the ridge preferably has a dimension between the ridge and the eyepiece somewhat greater than the relaxed dimension of the extreme edge of the channel of the resilient seal whereby to distort that seal somewhat outwardly while it is in engagement with the channel and ensure a firm peripheral contact between the two parts in addition to the contact formed between the faces of the mount and of the seal.
- a single type of protective layer may be provided which is not "handed” in any way and can readily be snapped on by the user onto either or both of the eyepieces of the respirator to give him additional environmental as well as mechanical protection for his eyepiece.
- the layer acts to give additional protection to the internal jointing between the eyepiece and its mount from the point of view of penetration by noxious substances and also provides thermal insulation - a form of "double glazing" - which can be very valuable if the respirators are to be used in extremely low temperatures where otherwise they might be an increased risk of condensation on the inner surface of the eyepiece itself.
- a face piece 1 of a respirator is provided with a breath outlet/speech transmitter 2 and with an air inlet 3 and auxiliary speech transmitter 4.
- Separate circular eyepieces 5 are positioned one each side of the median plane of the face piece and a harness is used for securing the respirator to the head of the user.
- the eyepieces 5 have a window 6 with a planar periphery entrapped within an annular peripheral mount generally designated 7 by which to form an airtight seal with the material of the face piece 1.
- the general position of the nose and eyes of the user is indicated by line 8.
- a sight corrective lens 9 may be provided inside either or both of the eyepieces as is shown only on the left-hand side of Figure 2, with a mount 10 fitting in lugs 11,12 at the two sides of the mount.
- each mount 7 has a continuous ring 12 which is snapped down onto the material of the face piece 1 to secure the mount to that face piece.
- This ring 12 offers on its peripherally outer surface an outwardly directed ridge 13 having a comparatively gently inclined surface 14 away from the face piece and sharply inclined surface 15 nearer to the face piece.
- a surface l6 of the ring 12 most remote from the face piece has a plane generally parallel to the latter and is arranged to be generally flush with other parts of the mount projecting to the outside of the face piece. In this way a continuous planar surface is formed above and generally parallel to the plane of the periphery 6 of the eyepieces.
- a protective layer 17 is of any desired transparent material. This may be chosen for its radiation-filtering qualities, for its impact resistance and/or for its thermal resistance qualities, for example. It has a planar periphery 18, being slightly outwardly domed at its centre 19. The periphery 18 is circular in shape conforming to the shape and size of the periphery of the eyepieces 5. It is received within a channel between two legs 19 and 20 of a continuous edge mount 21 of a suitable elastomeric material. Also this edge mount 21 has a flange 24 with a continuous peripherally-inwardly facing channel 22 conforming in shape to the rib 13 on the ring 12 of the mount. A nose 23 defines an extreme end of the seal 21 beyond the channel 22.
- the layer 17 with its mount 21 is simply offered up to and pressed directly inwardly towards the eyepiece.
- the nose 23 rides up the comparatively gently inclined surface 14 of the rib 13 until it can pass over the extreme diameter of that rib and snap into place with the channel 22 conforming tightly to the shape of the rib 13.
- the final diameter of the nose 23 is slightly greater than it was in repose so that the material of the seal is under peripheral tension.
- the flat face of the leg 20 is brought into tight and sealing contact with the flat face 16 of the mount 7 which is made up of edge surfaces of different elements. The leg 20 seals across these.
