Definitions
- the invention relates to a process for the reprocessing of fixing liquids which occur in the fixing baths used in the development of photographic films, in particular in the development of X-ray films, in which process the used fixing liquid is removed from the fixing bath in a circuit located at the location of the fixing bath. cleaned, desilvered and then returned to the fixing bath and, at the same time, substances used in the development process are added back to the fixing liquid.
- fixer baths from X-ray departments, graphic shops and other small to medium-sized development facilities collected by a disposal company, which would remove the silver contained in the fixer liquid and then drain the desilvered fixer liquid into the sewer with official approval.
- the invention has for its object to provide a method of the type mentioned, which excludes qualitative losses in the quality of photographic images, especially X-rays, even over long periods, which is economical and which also avoids the environmental impact previously accepted .
- This object is achieved according to the invention in that predetermined amounts of the cleaned and desilvered fixing liquid are measured in succession in the circuit, that a sample is taken from each of these amounts and transferred to a location remote from the location of the fixing bath, that the sample is analyzed at the remote location and the analysis result is used to determine which amounts of used substances have to be added to the measured amount of the fixing liquid from which the sample has been taken in order to restore the condition of a fresh fixing bath, that the analysis results or details of those based on these results certain Quantities are transmitted to the location of the fixing bath and that the specific amounts of the amount of the fixing liquid assigned to the sample are added there.
- the invention thus overcomes the prejudice of the specialist world in that an analysis of the cleaned and desilvered fixing bath determines exactly which constituents of the fixing liquid are missing in which amount, in order to then add the missing constituents of the fixing liquid.
- the disposal of the used liquid by a disposal company and the environmentally harmful disposal of the desilvered fixing liquid, which still contains pollutants, are thus eliminated.
- the transmission can take place, for example, by wire or wirelessly, and there is in particular the possibility that the addition of the specified quantities at the location of the fixing bath is directly controlled from the location away from the location of the fixing bath where the analysis takes place.
- a particular advantage of the method according to the invention lies in its particularly high economic efficiency, which results from the fact that the analysis for a large number of fixing bath operators is at a distance from the location of the fixing bath can carry out central location. This eliminates the need for each user of a fixer to create the technical and personnel requirements for carrying out an analysis, which should be too expensive for smaller development laboratories in medical practices and hospitals, but also for repro institutions and the like. In the simplest case, it is sufficient for the central analysis point to give the individual operators of a fixing bath the amounts of substances which are then added manually to the fixing bath or the amount of the fixing liquid from which the analyzed sample originates.
- the invention also relates to a device for carrying out the method according to the invention.
- This device has a fixing bath, to which a filter, an electrolytic cell and a container with a predetermined capacity are connected, which is provided with a device for taking samples and devices for adding certain amounts of the substances forming the fixing liquid. If a predetermined amount of the fixing liquid has accumulated in the container after passing through the filter and the electrolysis cell for desilvering, a sample can be taken from this container, which is then fed to the analysis. If the result of the analysis is then available, the contents of the container can be reinserted into the fixing bath.
- the substances to be added to refresh the fixing liquid can either be introduced into the container or can also be added directly to the fixing bath, immediately before or after the measured amount of the cleaned and desilvered fixing liquid has been returned to the fixing bath. It is advantageous if a first container with sufficient capacity for the in one between the fixing bath and the filter predetermined period of time used used fixing liquid is arranged. For example, this container can hold the average amount of fixative fluid consumed in the course of a day, which can then be filtered, desilvered, analyzed and refreshed regardless of the fixation mode, and is then available in the container following the electrolytic cell for reuse in the fixer bath, while the first container is again available to absorb used fixative.
- the devices to be installed on the fixing bath are very simple in nature and not very expensive, so that they can also be used in smaller development stations.
- the costly facilities, particularly the analysis laboratory can be remote and serve a variety of separate development stations.
- devices for adding the substances can be provided which comprise a storage container and an associated metering pump for each substance.
- an electronic data processing arrangement can even be provided, which determines the amounts of the substances to be added on the basis of the analysis values transmitted to it and contains control devices for the corresponding activation of the metering pumps.
- the data processing arrangement with dcm analysis center distant from the location of the fixing bath can be directly connected to enable the data exchange.
- a fixer bath 1, used fixative solution supplied by a fixer bath, not shown, is poured into a first container 1. This happens, for example, until the capacity of the container or a predetermined liquid level is reached.
- the size of the container 1 should be such that at least the liquid used in a given period of time, for example on a day or in a week, fits into it.
- the cleaning and desilvering process is then preferably initiated automatically, ie the fixing solution is passed from the container 1 into a cleaning device 2, which consists, for example, of an activated carbon filter that consists of dirt, gelatin residues from the liquid and halide ions removed.
- the cleaned liquid is then freed of silver components in a silver recovery device 3, which consists, for example, of an electrolysis cell, and then placed in a second container 4, which has a predetermined and preferably the same capacity as the container 1. It is possible to add the desilvered liquid in smaller batches one after the other from the device 3 into the container 4, but the container 4 can also be filled continuously and the desilvering carried out in a circuit between the device 3 and the container 4 and continued for as long until the contents of the container 4 are ready for reuse has reached the required residual silver content, whereupon the desilvering process and the supply of further liquid into the container 4 is stopped. A sample for analysis is then taken from the container 4, the amount of which is known. The analysis can be carried out by the user of the fixing bath.
- the analysis values are preferably determined in a center, which is responsible for several, even widely scattered, laboratories and which the samples are sent from these laboratories, after which the determined analysis values are sent from the center via a telephone line or also by radio to a data processing system located in the respective laboratory
- An arrangement 5 can be entered, which processes the analysis values and determines which constituents and in what quantity of the liquid in the container 4 must be added in order to bring the liquid into the state which a freshly prepared fixing bath must have.
- the amount can be tailored to the capacity of the container 4, but a quantity of liquid in the container 4 can also be measured and the need for supplementation can be related to this measured value.
- the data processing arrangement 5 accordingly controls metering pumps 6, which convey the required amount of the constituents to be added into the container 4 from storage containers 7.
- the storage containers contain the constituents that are consumed during fixation, in particular thiosulphate, sulphite and hardening agents, as well as a basic and an acidic constituent for adjusting the required pH value, which may have been changed by developers carried into the fixing bath and by the silvering.
- Each of the storage containers 7 is assigned its own metering pump, a metering pump for water being additionally provided, with which the concentration can be influenced.
- FIG. 2 shows a device for carrying out the method described with reference to FIG. 1, the same reference numbers as in FIG. 1 being used for the same parts.
- the device is designed as a compact unit, in which all the elements shown in FIG. 1 are combined and which can be set up in a size adapted to the needs of the fixing bath in a laboratory.
- the invention is not limited to the preparation of fixer baths for X-ray images or X-ray films, it can also be used in the same way for the preparation of used fixer baths that are produced in graphic shops and photo laboratories.

Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a process for the reprocessing of fixing liquids which occur in the fixing baths used in the development of photographic films, in particular in the development of X-ray films, in which process the used fixing liquid is removed from the fixing bath in a circuit located at the location of the fixing bath. cleaned, desilvered and then returned to the fixing bath and, at the same time, substances used in the development process are added back to the fixing liquid.
Such a method is used in large-scale photographic laboratories which have a constant mean throughput of material to be developed, so that the consumption of substances required for development and fixing also occurs at least approximately constant. Therefore, the used substances are replaced by adding a mixture of fresh fixative that is always the same and based on experience. Such a very inaccurate reprocessing may be sufficient for this application, but is not suitable if the throughput of the developing device fluctuates considerably, and the fluctuations in the composition of the fixing liquid which are dependent on the fluctuations in the throughput are also not acceptable if it is is the fixation of X-ray films that have to meet the highest requirements in terms of long shelf life. With X-ray images, no changes affecting the quality of the image, in particular no increase in the fog values and no decrease in the contrast, should occur in a period of up to 30 years.
For the reasons mentioned, the use of prepared fixing baths has so far been completely avoided in the treatment of X-ray films. A reprocessing of the fixing fluids in smaller development systems was also out of the question. Rather, the recommendation was not to reprocess a used bath, but always to replace it with a freshly prepared bath, in order to avoid errors that can be attributed to the fact that developers entering the fixer bath frequent use of the fixing liquid and the resulting increasing concentration of the developer on the film causes a yellow haze and that halide ions entering the fixing bath lead to inadequate fixing. In addition, the assumption was made that the saving in fixing solution was not proportionate to the effort required for reprocessing. It was therefore common practice to have used fixer baths from X-ray departments, graphic shops and other small to medium-sized development facilities collected by a disposal company, which would remove the silver contained in the fixer liquid and then drain the desilvered fixer liquid into the sewer with official approval.
In contrast, the invention has for its object to provide a method of the type mentioned, which excludes qualitative losses in the quality of photographic images, especially X-rays, even over long periods, which is economical and which also avoids the environmental impact previously accepted .
This object is achieved according to the invention in that predetermined amounts of the cleaned and desilvered fixing liquid are measured in succession in the circuit, that a sample is taken from each of these amounts and transferred to a location remote from the location of the fixing bath, that the sample is analyzed at the remote location and the analysis result is used to determine which amounts of used substances have to be added to the measured amount of the fixing liquid from which the sample has been taken in order to restore the condition of a fresh fixing bath, that the analysis results or details of those based on these results certain Quantities are transmitted to the location of the fixing bath and that the specific amounts of the amount of the fixing liquid assigned to the sample are added there.
The invention thus overcomes the prejudice of the specialist world in that an analysis of the cleaned and desilvered fixing bath determines exactly which constituents of the fixing liquid are missing in which amount, in order to then add the missing constituents of the fixing liquid. The disposal of the used liquid by a disposal company and the environmentally harmful disposal of the desilvered fixing liquid, which still contains pollutants, are thus eliminated. By dividing the circulating fixation liquid into predetermined subsets and taking samples that are assigned to these subsets, not only can the fixation liquid be prepared very precisely, but there is also the possibility of analyzing the sample on one of the Development device to make remote location from which information about the type and amount of substances to be added to the fixing liquid can then be transmitted to the location of the fixing bath. Any type of transmission is suitable for this. The transmission can take place, for example, by wire or wirelessly, and there is in particular the possibility that the addition of the specified quantities at the location of the fixing bath is directly controlled from the location away from the location of the fixing bath where the analysis takes place.
A particular advantage of the method according to the invention lies in its particularly high economic efficiency, which results from the fact that the analysis for a large number of fixing bath operators is at a distance from the location of the fixing bath can carry out central location.
The invention also relates to a device for carrying out the method according to the invention. This device has a fixing bath, to which a filter, an electrolytic cell and a container with a predetermined capacity are connected, which is provided with a device for taking samples and devices for adding certain amounts of the substances forming the fixing liquid. The substances to be added to refresh the fixing liquid can either be introduced into the container or can also be added directly to the fixing bath, immediately before or after the measured amount of the cleaned and desilvered fixing liquid has been returned to the fixing bath.
The devices to be installed on the fixing bath are very simple in nature and not very expensive, so that they can also be used in smaller development stations. The costly facilities, particularly the analysis laboratory, can be remote and serve a variety of separate development stations. As already mentioned, it is sufficient for simple devices if the analysis values are determined by telephone and the corresponding amounts of substances are added by hand. If greater expenditure can be justified, devices for adding the substances can be provided which comprise a storage container and an associated metering pump for each substance. Furthermore, an electronic data processing arrangement can even be provided, which determines the amounts of the substances to be added on the basis of the analysis values transmitted to it and contains control devices for the corresponding activation of the metering pumps. In this case, the data processing arrangement with dcm analysis center distant from the location of the fixing bath can be directly connected to enable the data exchange.

Die Vorrichtung ist als kompakte Einheit ausgebildet, in der alle in Fig. 1 dargestellten Elemente zusammengefaßt sind und die in einer an den Bedarf des Fixierbades angepaßten Größe in einem Labor aufstellbar ist.FIG. 2 shows a device for carrying out the method described with reference to FIG. 1, the same reference numbers as in FIG. 1 being used for the same parts. The device is designed as a compact unit, in which all the elements shown in FIG. 1 are combined and which can be set up in a size adapted to the needs of the fixing bath in a laboratory.
The invention is not limited to the preparation of fixer baths for X-ray images or X-ray films, it can also be used in the same way for the preparation of used fixer baths that are produced in graphic shops and photo laboratories.
