Abstract

The seat (13, 13') with the adjusting mechanism (19) is always covered at the bottom by the same covering board (25) independently of the seat shape, which allows a great variety in shape of the seat. Said covering board is screwed to the seat (13, 13') or the seat support (21). Armrests can be fitted or exchanged easily. Indentations (47, 49), extending laterally outwards in the covering board, are provided for receiving said armrests. <IMAGE>

Description

The present invention relates to a chair, in particular an office or work chair, with a base frame, a seat and a backrest, an adjustment mechanism which has a seat support and a backrest support and, when the inclination of the backrest changes, also causes a change in the inclination of the seat , and a cover for the adjustment mechanism attached to the underside of the seat.

In recent years, fashion currents have covered more and more areas that were previously practically free of such currents. Furthermore, there are more and more frequent and rapid changes in these currents. The area of chairs has also not been spared and presents the chair manufacturers with considerable problems. On the one hand, the chair manufacturers are forced to adapt to the current trends and to manufacture products that are required by the market, on the other hand they also have to try to keep the manufacturing costs under control in order not to be forced out of the market in terms of price. These requirements contradict each other. In order to keep the manufacturing costs as low as possible, large series are required which enable the use of injection molds. Injection molds are very expensive. If a chair model goes out of style faster than expected, the high investments in the manufacture of injection molds will prove to be bad investments. In order to avoid the risk of such bad investments, deep drawing tools are now used instead of injection molds in the manufacture of chairs. Thermoformed tools are cheaper than injection molds, but the parts made with them are much more expensive than parts that are injection molded in large quantities.

This has an adjustment mechanism which, when the inclination of the backrest changes, also causes a change in the inclination of the seat and the distance of the seat from the backrest. The adjustment mechanism is enclosed by a formwork, which also serves as a support for the seat. The seat is hinged to the front of the shell by means of a bolt. It proves to be disadvantageous that a change in the inclination of the backrest between the seat and the formwork opens and closes. There is a risk of fingers getting caught. In newer chairs, the casing is connected to the seat. The disadvantage here is that a new formwork is necessary each time the chair shape is changed. However, due to this large number of cladding, considerable storage and spare parts problems arise. It is expected that the chair manufacturer will keep spare parts for repairs in stock for chairs that are no longer manufactured. These camps are therefore increasing rapidly. Now, however, large warehouses with many subitems make rational warehouse management difficult and also block a lot of space and capital that could be used for other purposes.

It is an object of the present invention to at least partially avoid the aforementioned disadvantages in a chair of the type mentioned at the outset. A chair construction should be found which is much more change-friendly than previous chair designs. The chair designer should no longer be restricted in his freedom of choice of shape by manufacturing constraints. Furthermore, the new chair design should make it possible to largely use the same parts for different chair types and chair families, so that these parts can be efficiently manufactured in large quantities and storage is possible with little space and capital requirements.

According to the invention, this is achieved in a chair of the type mentioned at the outset in that the casing only partially covers the seat below. The casing therefore has a smaller diameter than the seat, so that an area around the seat remains practically uncovered.

Thanks to the shape of the formwork described, a large number of seat shapes are possible without having to change the formwork. The various seat shapes can also be quickly combined with a variety of different chair frames and different backrest shapes in accordance with fashion trends and / or comfort requirements and other needs. The new chair construction therefore has a high degree of flexibility to adapt to the changing needs of the market. The designer therefore has great freedom in the design of the seat and the backrest. The great freedom of the designer even makes it possible to take the design requests of different customers into account "à la carte" to a certain extent. This is also the case if only small series are ordered. Later deliveries can also be made in small series, if necessary. It is therefore no longer necessary for the economically minded buyer to buy chairs off the shelf. Rather, the customer has it in his hand to procure chairs without significant additional cost, which carry his individual signature, so to speak, and reflect the image of the company in which they are used. Despite the large possible variety of shapes, many identical parts can be used in all chairs, which enables rational and cheap production and storage.

The seat can have a cover that also extends to the underside. This is advantageously done all around. This gives the seat a warmer and more pleasing appearance than is the case with known chairs. The seat is advantageously padded, the padding also extending to the underside of the seat. This ensures that the seat feels soft on all sides and there is no longer any risk of hitting the seat hard with one leg.

The casing expediently has recesses running laterally outwards for receiving and fastening armrest supports. This makes it possible to provide the chair with or without armrests as desired. A chair without armrests can also be easily retrofitted with armrests. Existing armrests can also be easily removed if necessary.

The invention further relates to a building system for the production of chairs, which is characterized by a plurality of seats with different shapes and colors, but always the same adjustment mechanism and the same formwork are used for the adjustment mechanism. This construction system enables a large number of chairs to be assembled quickly by combining the various components. If armrests with armrests with different lengths are provided, chairs with different armrest distances can also be built.

Embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the drawings. It shows:
  • FIG. 1 seen a work chair according to an embodiment of the invention from behind,
  • FIG. 2 shows a view of the casing for the adjustment mechanism from below,
  • FIG. 3 shows a view of the casing of FIG. 2, the seat also being shown in section,
  • Figures 4 and 5 each have a view of the adjustment mechanism and the formwork from above, but with different seat shapes.

Figure 1 shows a work chair from behind. It has a base frame 11, a seat 13, a backrest 15 and armrests 17. The chair also has an adjustment mechanism 19 which is indicated in FIG. 1 but is not visible. The adjustment mechanism 19 ensures that when the inclination of the backrest 15 changes, the inclination of the seat 13 is also effected. The change in inclination angle of the seat 13 taking place is about half the size of that of the backrest 15. Such an adjustment mechanism is described, for example, in German Utility Model 84 17 429. As FIG. 4 shows, seat support 21 and backrest support 23 represent parts of the adjustment mechanism 19. The casing 25 of the adjustment mechanism 19 is fastened to the underside of the seat 13.

With reference to Figures 2 to 4, the casing 25 will now be described in more detail. It has a round shape, but could also have a polygonal or oval shape, for example. As FIGS. 4 and 5 show, the casing 25 is dimensioned such that it only partially covers the seat 13, 13 '. As can be seen in particular from FIG. 3, the plate-shaped casing 25 has a protuberance 27 which accommodates the adjustment mechanism 19 serves. The opening 29 serves to pass through the column 31 (FIG. 1). The opening 33 serves to receive an adjustment button with which the spring force of the adjustment mechanism can be changed. The holes 35 and 36 of the cover 25 serve to fasten the cover 25 by means of screws 39. These screws 39 pass through the holes 37, 38 of the seat support 21 (FIG. 4) and are screwed tightly to the core 41 of the seat 13, so that the casing 25, seat support 21 and seat 13 are firmly connected. The core 41 can have insert nuts (not shown) for receiving the screws 39.

As Figure 3 shows, the seat 13 has a core 41, e.g. made of wood, upholstery 43, e.g. made of foam plastic, and a cover 45 made of textile material or leather. The cover 45 or the padding 43 also extends at the edges to the underside of the core 41.

On the casing 25 there are recesses 47, 49 on the side for receiving and fastening the e.g. tubular armrest support 51 (Fig. 1) is provided. Each armrest 17 has a front and a rear armrest support, but only the rear armrest support 51 is visible in FIG. 1. The armrests are also attached using screws (not shown). These screws pass through holes 53, 54 in the casing 25 and holes 55, 56 in the seat support and are firmly screwed to the core 41. The core 41 can have insert nuts for receiving these screws.

The construction described enables a chair without an armrest to be easily retrofitted with armrests by the buyer. It is also possible to retrofit a chair so that the distance between the two armrests 17 is greater. For this purpose, the standard armrests are replaced by armrests with longer armrest supports 51.
