- each blade of a propeller in particular of a fan unit, produces a wake which rotates at the speed of rotation of the propeller.
- This wake generates a sound which is intense when it encounters a fixed obstacle. This is the case for example when the wake meets the arms of the supports of a fan unit which support the latter to maintain it in a fixed position relative to the radiator with which it is associated.
- Such axial fans generate a highly turbulent wake which generates significant noise. Indeed, each time the wake of a blade passes in front of a support arm it produces a mechanical impulse which causes a particular noise adding to the aerodynamic noise of the fan and the noise of the motor which drives it.
- the structure of the wake generated by a blade is a function of the aerodynamic definition of the latter and, in particular, of the evolution of the speed field in the channels which form between two neighboring blades.
- these wakes can create around the support arms non-stationary systems which are sources of noise if the gap between the trailing edges of the blades of the support arms is relatively small. It has been found that the wake which is in the extension of the trailing edges of the blades disappears relatively quickly at a certain distance downstream, relative to the trailing edge, due to the damping due to the viscosity of the air and that this wake is then lost in the general turbulence of the flow.
