Abstract

The device comprises: an arm (17) which is rigidly fixed to the base (8) of the chin rest without touching the sound box of the violin; a ball device (29, 37) which can be locked by screws (38) and be adjusted along the arm (17); and a shoulder rest piece (32). Adjustment of the ball device (29, 37) along the arm (17) makes it possible to adjust the distance from the piece (32) to the base (8) of the chin rest (2), and the ball device (29, 37) itself, the orientation and tilt of the piece (32) relative to the violin. The distance to the violin from the rest piece (32) can be modified by a series of differently bent arms (17). These various adjustments enable the violinist to adapt, theoretically once and for all, the device to his anatomy and habits.

Description

The present invention relates to a shoulder support device for violin, of the type comprising in particular a support piece resting against the shoulder of the violinist and adjustable connection to the violin by an arm, one end of which is rigidly anchored, but removably, at the base of the chin strap attached to the violin.

Devices of this kind are supposed to ensure perfect holding of the violin, the end of which should be embedded between the chin and the shoulder of the violinist, so that the left hand (or right, for left-handers) of the latter released from any participation in the support of the violin and that the fingers of this hand can then jump very quickly and with great precision from the first positions to those in which they touch the strings very close to the bridge and vice versa.

In order for violinists to be able to adapt these devices to their morphology and habits relating to the holding of the violin and the position of their head while they are playing, these must of course be adjustable. In addition, it must be possible to separate them easily from the violin when it comes to storing the latter in its case. It is also necessary, of course, to be able to adapt them to the violin without complications.

Known devices of the type under consideration, however, have serious faults: either they are not adjustable (DE-A-41057) or they expose the violin to damage to which a professional violinist refuses to expose his instrument.

A first risk of damage comes from the connection mode of the arm of the device at the base of the chin rest. If this connection is made by moving the arm of the device from the inside of the violin to the outside (CH-A-277,350; US-A-3,727.509; FR-A-401,172), the risk is not negligible if '' following an inadequate push, the end of the arm of the device misses the base of the chin rest and strikes the back of the violin, making the lacquer burst.

Another risk of damage comes from the modulus of elasticity of the arm of the device. To become aware of this, it should be remembered, on the one hand, that the bottom of the violin is greatly thinned at its periphery, to the point that at this location and in some cases, it hardly measures more than a millimeter, as is often the case with fishplates, and on the other hand, during a production, many violinists suddenly perform a violent nod, or a sudden movement of the shoulder, which has the effect of exerting a strong pressure, like a shock, on the violin. This shock is naturally received by the arm of the device. The result is, in fact, a pressure on the arm, at the point of attachment of the support piece, which is immobilized against the shoulder of the violinist, and a bending torque at the point of embedding of this arm at the base. of the chin rest.

Consequently, if the modulus of elasticity of the arm of the device is high, that is to say if this arm has a rigidity such that the pressures which can be exerted on it, in the vicinity of its free end, do not never bend to the point of making it touch the body of the violin, so these pressures are transmitted fully to the point where the arm is embedded, in the form of a torque equal to the product of the pressure exerted on this arm by the length of the latter . However, such a couple can cause either the breaking of the hooks of the chin rest, to the chagrin of the violinist, or the disastrous bursting of the bottom of the violin case or the splint.

On the other hand, if the modulus of elasticity of the arm of the device is lower, to the point that this arm comes into more or less violent contact with the bottom of the violin case, under the effect of high pressures, it may ensuing irreparable damage to the violin by bursting of its lacquer layer.

The present invention aims to create a device of the type considered d, which is free from the aforementioned defects. To this end, it starts from the consideration that it is necessary to avoid the full repercussion, at the point of embedding of the arm of the device, of the violent pressures that the bearing piece of this device can accidentally exert on this arm. In other words, it is necessary to limit the efforts at the point of embedding the arm of the device, by allowing this arm to rest against the bottom of the violin case, when the pressure exerted on it exceeds the limit provided. At the place of this support, the bottom of the violin case is thick enough not to risk being pressed. To avoid a bursting of the lacquer layer at the bottom of the violin, following the coming into contact with it of the arm of the device, it suffices to fill the part concerned with this arm with a layer of protective material. Furthermore, it is desirable that the arm of the device is rigid enough not to flex significantly and to remain away from the violin under normal conditions of use.

A device of the type under consideration, which has the features defined by the feature of claim 1, fulfills the aim sought.

The special embodiments defined by claim 2 have a particularly advantageous anchoring of the arm of the device at the base of the chin rest, in that its installation does not risk damaging the violin.

The features defined by claim 3 add to this the rigidity of the anchoring of the arm of the device at the base of the chin rest.

Those defined by claim 4 also offer the advantage that the locking mechanism, not only engages automatically when the arm of the device comes into place, but prevents any involuntary release of this arm.

Finally, those defined by claims 5 and 6 have the advantage of increasing the possibilities of adjusting the device by means as simple to manufacture as to handle.

  • la Fig. 1 en est une vue en élévation depuis le côté de la chanterelle du violon, une partie étant coupée;
  • la Fig. 2 en est une vue en plan sur la face inférieure du violon, une partie étant arrachée;
  • la Fig. 3 en est une vue en élévation depuis l'extrémité du violon;
An embodiment of the device according to the invention is shown schematically and simply by way of example in the drawing, in which:
  • Fig. 1 is an elevational view thereof from the side of the violin chanterelle, a part being cut off;
  • Fig. 2 is a plan view on the underside of the violin, a part being torn off;
  • Fig. 3 is an elevational view from the end of the violin;
  • Fig. 4 is an exploded perspective view thereof, and
  • Fig. 5 is a sectional view on a larger scale of part of this embodiment.

For clarity of the drawing, only the case 1 of the violin is shown, in the absence of the tailpiece and the button to which the latter is attached.

A chin strap 2 is fixed to the body 1 in a conventional manner. To this end, a first pair of square hooks 3 have one, 4, of their branches planted in the chin strap 2, while their other branches 5 are threaded at their ends. A second pair of hooks 6, similar to the first, each have a branch 7 secured to the base 8 of the chin rest 2, while their other branch 9 is also threaded at its end. A pair of threaded tubes 10 are simultaneously screwed onto the threaded portions of the hooks 3, 6 to firmly pinch the body 1 between the chin rest 2 and its base 8. Soft cushions 11, for example made of felt or cork, are respectively glued under the chin rest 2 and on its base 8 so as not to injure the body 1 of the violin.

The contact described between the chin rest 2, its base 8 and the body 1 of the violin does not in any way disturb the vibrations of the latter. This box 1 can notoriously not vibrate at this place. To secure the button to which the tailpiece is attached, a reinforcement block (not shown) is, in fact, housed in the body 1, at its end. This block is pressed against the splint 12, the soundboard 13 and the bottom 14 of the body 1 and it is to the right of this block that the body 1 is pinched between the chin rest 2 and its base 8.

The base 8 of the chin rest 2 has a receptacle 15 in the shape of a "T" (FIG. 4). The edges 16 of the receptacle 15 converge towards each other in the direction of the body 1 of the violin. Thin strips of plastic (not shown) are advantageously glued against the internal faces of the ends of the transverse branch of the "T" of this receptacle 15.

An arm 17, which carries the device according to the invention has a flat end 18, of trapezoidal shape. The inclination of the edges of the end 18 of the arm 17 corresponds to that of the edges 16 of the receptacle 15, and the thickness of this end 18 has the width of the transverse branch of the "T" of the receptacle 15. An elastic tongue 19 has its end 20 which is fixed punctually to the end 18 of the arm 17. Thus, the tongue 19 is normally pressed against the end 18 of the arm 17, but it can be moved away from it by bending, by grasping its free end 21 In the vicinity of this end 21, a stud 22 is fixed to the tongue 19. The stud 22 passes freely through a hole in the end 18 of the arm 17; its end is slightly conical.

To mount the device according to the invention on the violin, the end 18 of the arm 17 is slid into the receptacle 15 by its flared end. Then, the arm 17 is pulled towards the center of the body 1 of the violin, until the oblique edges of its trapezoidal end 18 are applied against the bottom of the grooves formed by the ends of the transverse bar of the "T" of the receptacle 15. When the arm 17 arrives in this position, the conical end of the stud 22, which has hitherto slipped on the base 8 of the chin rest 2, slightly lifting the tongue 19, enters a housing (not shown ) also conical to the base 8 of the chin rest 2, under the action of the tongue 19. The application of the conical point of the stud 22 against the conical flank of the housing of the base 8 of the chin rest 2 has the effect of maintaining the end 18 of the arm 17 fully engaged in the receptacle 15, while compensating for the manufacturing tolerances and preventing it from being released in the absence of voluntary intervention by the violinist.

The described attachment of the arm 17 to the base 8 of the chin rest 2 has the advantage of being absolutely rigid; it does not allow any frolic of the arm 17, which could be a source of incongruous noise. To separate the device according to the invention from the violin, it is obviously sufficient to lift the end 21 of the tongue 19, which extends not only from the arm 17, but also from the base 8 of the chin rest 2, in order to extend the point of the stud 22 from the housing of this base 8.

As shown in Fig. 4, the rest of the arm 17 has the same thickness as its trapezoidal end 18. This arm can therefore be obtained by cutting a sheet of metal. Its central part 23 makes an angle with the trapezoidal end 18, so that the rest of the arm 17 does not touch the bottom 14 of the body 1 of the violin. For the same purpose, the part 23 of the arm 17 could also be curved. The device can naturally be delivered with a set of arms 17, the part 23 of which makes different angles with the end 18 or is curved differently.

The end 24 of the arm 17 is wider than the central part 23. Its lateral edges 25 are bent at right angles, so as to form a slide for a slide 26. A longitudinal slot 27 is provided in the arm 17, in the middle of its width. This slot 27 is a little shorter than the end 24 of the arm 17 forming a slide for the slide 26.

De préférence, ce pied 30 sera cependant soudé au coulisseau 26.Once in place, the slide 26 is held laterally by the edges 25 of the arm 17, and axially by a screw 28 with a flat head, which passes through the slot 27 and is engaged in a tapped hole in the slide 26. A ball joint 29 is rigidly fixed to the slide 26. In the example shown, the foot 30 of the ball joint 29 is fixed to the slide 26 by a screw 31 (Fig. 5). Preferably, this foot 30 will however be welded to the slide 26.

By moving the screw 28 with the slide 26 along the slot 27, the distance from the ball joint 29 to the base 8 of the chin rest 2 is adjusted, and consequently that of this ball joint from the end of the violin. When this distance has been adjusted properly, the screw 28 is fully tightened, which rigidly secures the slide 26 to the arm 17. The device according to the invention also offers an additional possibility of adjusting the distance in question, by simply turning the slide 26 of 180 ° in its plane.

The adjustment of the distance from the ball 29 to the base 8 of the chin rest 2 could naturally be ensured by other blocking organs in any set position, as those shown in the drawing and described above. For example, the arm 17 could have, in its rear part, the shape of its part 23 and be made longer. The slot 27 could be extended as much and the ball joint 29 could be fixed to a simple base, for example circular, that a screw similar to the screw 28 would fix on the arm 17.

The device according to the invention finally comprises a support piece 32. This essentially consists of a plate 33, thin, elongated, made of malleable metal, not very elastic. A coating 34 of flexible synthetic material is fixed to the plate 33. The shape of the latter and consequently of the support piece 32 can be changed by hand, but with force, so that the coating 34 evenly and across its entire length against the violinist's shoulder. The curvature of the end 35 of the support piece 32 is accentuated, so that this piece also rests on the shoulder of the violinist.

The covering 34 has a cylindrical opening 36, located approximately in the middle of its length (FIG. 5). A clamp 37 is housed in the opening 36 and fixed to the plate 33 by four screws 38. The clamp 37 is intended to receive the ball 29. The plate 33 has a circular opening 39, coaxial with the opening 36, but of lower diameter, so as to trap the ball joint 29 in the basket 37. The latter is masked by a washer 40 of the same material as the coating 34.

When the four screws 38 are fully tightened, the ball joint 29 is firmly immobilized in the clamp 37. To maneuver and adjust the ball joint mechanism described, one or two screws 38 must be loosened. This mechanism makes it possible in particular to adjust the orientation and the inclination of the support piece 32 relative to the slide 26, therefore relative to the arm 17 and the violin. As for the distance from the support piece 32 to the violin, it can be modified by the substitution of one arm 17 for another.

It follows from the preceding description that after tightening the screws 28 and 38, the device described permanently guarantees the position of the support piece 32 relative to the violin. So, when the violinist has perfectly adapted this device to his morphology and habits, he no longer has to take care of the settings. At the end of a concert, he just needs to lift the tongue 19 to detach the device according to the invention from the violin, in order to store the latter in its case. When he reassembles this device for a future service, he will find it under the same conditions.

Thanks to the device according to the invention, the violin is held simply by pressing the base of the cheek on the chin rest. The left hand is therefore entirely free to move along the neck of the violin to approach the fingers of the bridge or withdraw them towards the nut, without having to support the violin.

The arm 17 is preferably made of a metal rigid enough not to flex significantly and stay away from the violin, under normal conditions of use. To this end, it can be made, for example, of hardened steel, and then returned. However, this arm 17 will have to be flexible enough to bear against the bottom 14 of the violin, if the piece 32 is subjected to strong pressure, for example due to a violent nod of the head or a sudden movement of the shoulder of the violinist, this to avoid the repercussion of this effort at the point of embedding of the arm 17 at the base 8 of the chin rest 2.

In order to prevent the arm 17 from damaging the bottom 14 of the body 1 of the violin by coming into contact with it, the face of the arm 17 facing the bottom 14 is provided with a layer of protective material (not shown) .

For children, beginners and amateurs, the execution of the device according to the invention can be simplified, for example by eliminating the ball joint mechanism as well as the slide 26, the support piece being arranged so as to be able to slide the along the slot 27 of the arm 17 and able to be locked relative to this arm.
