Abstract

In an internal combustion engine (20) the centre line (26) of each cylinder (22) is offset from the rotational axis (17) of the crankshaft (23) in the direction of rotation. The resulting altered piston timing provides earlier effective torque during the power stroke, inherent suppression of premature detonation or knocking, increased volumetric and mechanical efficiency, lower thrust loading on the cylinder walls, and decreased vibration.
