Abstract

PCT No. PCT/DE87/00087 Sec. 371 Date Jan. 4, 1988 Sec. 102(e) Date Jan. 4, 1988 PCT Filed Mar. 3, 1987 PCT Pub. No. WO87/05194 PCT Pub. Date Sep. 11, 1987.The invention is directed to a hair dryer in which the heating device, the switch, the igniting mechanism and the gas tank are provided by a conventional gas-operated pocket lighter (17) preferably equipped with a battery ignition or piezoquartz ignition or, in an alternative embodiment, by a disposable lighter using flint ignition (40). It is also within the scope of the invention to use an exchangeable gas tank, with the igniting device being fixedly arranged in the hair dryer housing. The ignition process is started as the lighter (17 or 40) is inserted into the recess (21 or 21a) of the hair dryer housing, with the blower (2) being started briefly before by contact of the laminae (18 or 18a). The blower current is supplied by either disposable batteries or rechargeable accumulators. The hair dryer of the invention is turned off simply by easing the thumb pressure, which ensures at the same time that the appliance does not continue running accidentally when put away. If desired, the lighter (17 or 40) can be withdrawn from the hair dryer housing (1) for further customary use. By virture of its complete independence of electrical outlets, the hair dryer of the invention is perfectly safe for use in a wet environment and ready for use anywhere. In addition, its low weight and compact dimensions make it ideal for travelling. The appliance affords simple and low-cost manufacture.

Description

The invention relates to a hair dryer according to the preamble of the main claim.

The previous state of the art has hair dryers which have either a gas tank and a complicated switching and ignition mechanism or a heat accumulator provided with heating wires. Both versions are heavy and have complicated, expensive components. They are unwieldy and have little suitability for travel.

Based on this prior art, the object underlying the invention is to use a conventional disposable or quartz pocket lighter or an exchangeable gas container to construct a travel-proof, safe, light and simple hair dryer.

This object is achieved according to the invention by a hairdryer with the feature of the main claim. An ordinary gas pocket lighter or a gas container is used as a heat-generating part in a hairdryer housing equipped with a suction and a discharge opening and a battery-operated blower. The lighter or the gas container must be inserted through a recess in the hair dryer housing so that the ignition and gas outlet on the soleplate are pressed by the thumb pressure exerted on the sole. The lighter or the gas tank also serve to actuate a switch, so that the blower is started up shortly before the ignition. The air baffle accommodated in the housing forms a connecting gap with the air baffle between the receiving chamber and the air flow channel which has a curve towards the hot air blowing nozzle. The combustion of the gas takes place in the connecting gap in such a way that an ideal, complete combustion takes place by supplying air or oxygen. The resulting warming of the air flow is sufficient to dry the hair.

The hair dryer according to the invention offers the following advantages and effects:
  • a) Security by not using the power grid.
  • b) Independence from limited cable lengths, from different socket versions in different countries. This means that it can be used absolutely anywhere, e.g. B. in the car, on campsites, beaches etc.
  • c) The dimensions hardly larger than a pack of cigarettes and light in weight (prototypes weigh around 250 g, which is about 30% less than the weight of conventional travel hair dryers).
  • d) No waiting times for the air to be heated. Immediate warm air delivery.
  • e) When the device is not in use, the lighter or gas container can be removed and used for the usual purpose. In this case, the hair dryer without a lighter is completely harmless even in children's hands.
  • f) No flame escapes from the warm air outlet nozzle because the lighter flame is reduced to approximately one tenth of its original length by supplying fresh air or oxygen and burns ideally in the connecting gap. By initiating the ignition process after the fan has been switched on, reliable ignition by avoiding deflagrations is ensured due to the negative pressure present in the combustion chamber. The overpressure normally caused by gas ignition does not lead to self-extinguishing of the gas flame.
  • g) As soon as the blow-out nozzle of the hair dryer is covered by the hair or by any object, the flame extinguishes immediately. This is done in such a way that the air pent-up by blocking the warm air blowing nozzle blows out the lighter flame through the connecting gap. This ensures additional security.
  • h) The heat-giving gas lighter or the gas container can be refilled as desired or replaced when using a disposable lighter or gas container.
  • i) The thermodot attached to the housing surface forms an optical security. If for some reason a critical temperature is reached, the thermodot changes color. Then switch off the device. The light pressure applied to the lighter with the thumb is released. The lighter springs back a few millimeters from its position due to the spring pressure of its gas lever, and this causes both the gas outlet and the operation of the blower to be interrupted. This also happens if you leave the hairdryer out of your hand or put it down. This ensures that the device does not continue to run unintentionally.
  • j) The hair dryer according to the invention is simple and inexpensive to manufacture.

The hair dryer (1) shown schematically in a side view in FIG. 1 without a housing cover has a blower (2), a lighter receiving chamber (6) delimited from the air flow channel (5) by an air baffle (3) and an air deflector (4). The free end (7) of the air baffle (3) is bent into the air flow channel (5), the free end (8) of the air baffle (4) is bent into the lighter receiving chamber (6). The two free-standing ends (7, 8) form a connecting gap (9) between the air flow channel (5) and the lighter receiving chamber (6). The lighter receiving chamber (6) has two lighter guide strips (12) and the limiting strips (10, 11). The limiting strip (10) attached to the side of the air deflection plate (4) has a throttle stop lug (13). The limiting strip (11) attached on the fan side has a mounting device (14) for the housing cover (1 a, FIG. 3). The spring plate (16) attached to the front surface (1 b) with a screw connection (15) ensures pressure on the inserted lighter (17, Fig. 2). The fins (18) placed in the lighter receiving chamber (6) serve for the contact of the blower current line.

Bei der praktischen Erprobung des Gerätes wurden Lufttemperaturen um 70° C an der Warmluftausblasdüse gemessen, die den Temperaturwerten herkömmlicher Haartrockner entsprechen.2 shows a schematic side view of the hair dryer (1) with the inserted lighter (17) without a housing cover. The gas lever (17a) of the lighter (17) engages on the gas lever stop lug (13) of the limiting strip (10) in such a way that when the lighter (17) is pushed further into the housing (1) the gas lever (17a) yields, so that both the Gas outlet as well as the ignition of the gas take place. Shortly beforehand, the end face (19) of the lighter (17) compresses the fins (18) of the blower power line, so that the blower (2) is started to rotate in the direction of the arrow (2a). The blower draws in the air perpendicular to the plane of the drawing and blows it through the air flow channel (5) in the direction of the arrow (2b) through the warm air blowing nozzle (20). As a result of the fan air flow in the air flow channel (5), a suction effect occurs in the connecting gap (9), so that fresh air enters the lighter receiving chamber (6) through the recess (21, Fig. 4), in particular through the lighter cooling slots (22, Fig. 4) . This causes the lighter (17) to cool and the lighter flame (17b) to receive more oxygen per unit of time, which enables complete combustion to take place. The combustion takes place in the connecting gap (9). The resulting heat is sucked into the air flow duct (5) and mixed with the blower air using the curve (5a) and the semicircular arc (4a) of the air deflection plate (4) and blown out as warm air through the warm air blowing nozzle (20) (2c). During the practical testing of the device, air temperatures of around 70 ° C were measured on the warm air outlet nozzle, which correspond to the temperature values of conventional hair dryers.

In Fig. 3 the housing cover (1 a) is shown with the air intake opening (24) and with the thermodot (25) which changes color in the event of overheating. The housing cover (1 a) is designed so that it closes both the mounting surface (1 c) and the edges of the air guide and air deflection plates (3, 4) in an airtight manner in the assembled state.

In Fig. 4 the hair dryer housing shown schematically in Fig. 1 is shown without a housing cover in perspective. Here it is obvious that the air baffles and air baffle plates (3, 4), the limiting strips (10, 11) and the lighter guide strips (12) are arranged perpendicular to the mounting surface (1 c). An aluminum sheet (26) is attached as heat insulation on the mounting surface (1 c), as well as on the inside of the housing cover (1 a). The recess (21) is designed such that its shape is adapted to the contours of the lighter (17) perpendicular to its longitudinal axis. A lighter distance rail (11 a), which is attached to the blower-side limiting strip (11), ensures that the lighter (17) does not lie directly on the limiting strip (11) and fresh air flows into the lighter receiving chamber (6) and the lighter (17 ) can cool. In this illustration, the battery box (27) can be seen on the back of the mounting surface (1 c).

Fig. 5 shows the hair dryer housing (1) without housing cover (1 a) in a perspective view. The most important components of the hair dryer according to the invention are shown here in a side view, seen obliquely from behind. The lighter (17) is to be inserted into the recess (21) in the direction of the arrow (17c) so that the gas lever (17a) is directed upwards and the gas outlet valve (28) is directed downwards. During operation, the gas flows directly into the opening of the connecting gap (9) on the lighter receptacle, where the combustion takes place. In this figure, the motor (29) with its shaft (30) is shown with the fan (2) removed, so that the vertical position of the shaft axis relative to the mounting surface (1c) is illustrated.

In Fig. 6 the hairdryer is shown with the cover (31) of the battery box (27) removed and with the lighter (17). The batteries (32), the back of the motor (29) and the Mon Day pillar (33) of the cover (31) are housed in the battery box (27). The lighter (17) is a model that can be refilled through a valve (34). A start mark (35) on the side surface of the lighter (17), if necessary, is a visual indicator of how deep the lighter (17) is to be inserted into the housing so that the hair dryer is put into operation. The start marking (35) can be seen in FIGS. 2, 5, 6 and 7.

In Figures 7 and 8 the handling of the hair dryer during operation is shown in perspective. By pushing the lighter (17) into the recess (21) on the front surface (1 b), the hair dryer is put into operation by pressing the thumb on the lighter base (23) in such a way that gas outflow, ignition of the gas and start of the fan occur at about the same time . The air (24a) drawn in through the air intake opening (24) heats up, as described initially, and is blown out in the direction of the arrow (2c) through the warm air blowing nozzle (20). During the entire hair drying process, the back pressure of the gas lever (17a) must be overcome by pressing your thumb lightly. This is necessary for security reasons. As soon as the thumb pressure subsides, the lighter (17) jumps back a few millimeters from its position due to the spring pressure of its gas lever (17a), which automatically switches off the device. However, the pressure of the spring plate (16) keeps the lighter (17) in its guide in the hairdryer housing, so that the lighter is prevented from accidentally falling out of the hairdryer housing. After completion of the drying process, the lighter is removed from the housing guide by a slight pull and can be used for its usual purpose. Attaching a thermodot (25) to the housing cover (1a) offers additional optical security. Flame escaping from the warm air blowing nozzle (20) is therefore excluded because the combustion takes place ideally through the supply of air or oxygen to the lighter flame, so that the length of the lighter flame is reduced to approximately one tenth of its original length.

Die Gasverbrennung in dem Verbindungsspalt (9) und die Warmluftabgabe durch die Warmluftausblasdüse (20) erfolgen wie in den vorangegangenen Beschreibungen.9 and 10 show the hair dryer according to the invention without a housing cover in an embodiment for disposable lighters (40) with flint ignition. The components of the hair dryer illustrated and described in FIGS. 1 to 8 have remained the same apart from the special U-guide (36), the position of the spring plate (16a) and the position of the slats (18a). The U guide (36) is equipped with a rubber cylinder (37). The screw (37a) passing through the rubber cylinder (37) and its nut (37b) fix it on the inside of the U-guide (36, Fig. 9, 10, 11). The U-guide (36) is attached to the mounting surface (1c) with the help of screws (38, 39) so that the longitudinal axis of the guide is at an angle to the front surface (1 b) and its open side on the fan side with the spring plate (16a) is delimited. When the disposable lighter (40) is pressed into the U-guide (36), the ignition wheel (41) rubs against the rubber cylinder (37), the lighter (40) jumps in the direction of the spring plate (16a) until the throttle lever (42) starts the rubber cylinder (37) so that the gas lever is pressed simultaneously with the ignition and the gas is discharged. During this process, the spring plate (16a) bends in such a way that it makes contact with the fins (18a) and thereby starts the fan (2) shortly before the actual ignition (FIG. 10). The gas combustion in the connecting gap (9) and the hot air discharge through the hot air blowing nozzle (20) take place as in the previous descriptions.

Hieraus ist ersichtlich, dass die Form der Aussparung (21 a) den Konturen des Wegwerffeuerzeuges (40) quer seiner Längsachse angepasst ist.11 shows the hair dryer according to the invention, the U-guide (36) and the disposable lighter (40) in a perspective view. From this it can be seen that the shape of the recess (21 a) is adapted to the contours of the disposable lighter (40) transversely to its longitudinal axis.

In all of the exemplary embodiments, the gas lighter can be easily replaced by a gas container, in which case the ignition device of any type is fixed in the housing of the hair dryer. In this case, the ignition device can be actuated either by a separate switch attached to the hairdryer housing or by means of the gas container by pushing it into the hairdryer.
