Definitions
- the present invention relates to an apparatus for preheating fresh air supplied to living quarters or similar space.
- State of the Art Different systems are utilized today in the ventilation of such space.
- the most usual and least costly system comprises supply air valves in the form of adjustable dampers mounted in connection to holes under windows in the walls of the space.
- the greatest disadvantage with this system is that in cold weather cold air flows directly into the space and is felt by persons therein as draught, which can be eliminated only by closing the damper. Such a measure results in lack of ventilation with the risk of unpleasant odor, formation of mould and other environmental problems in the space.
- a fan is utilized in connection with an exhaust air means and a fresh air supply means, the latter comprising valves which may be regulatable and are situated immediately under a ceiling or window.
- a fresh air supply means comprising valves which may be regulatable and are situated immediately under a ceiling or window.
- cold air flows (is drawn) in through the valves directly during cold weather, which results in draughts and cooling of the space if the valves are not closed. This cooling can only be prevented by costly heating of the space.
- a third known system there is a combined fresh air and exhaust air apparatus including a heat exchanger, which preheats the incoming fresh air, whereby the above-mentioned problems are substantially eliminated. The cost of this system and its installa ⁇ tion a e high, however.
- One object of the present invention is to eliminate at least some of the disadvantages burdening the known systems and devices and to provide an apparatus with which fresh air supplied to living quarters or the like space can be effectively, pre ⁇ heated without draughts, cooling and environmental problems occurring, and without complicated and expensive installation being required.
- Figure 1 is a partially sectioned side elevation ' of an apparatus in accordance with the invention.
- Figure 2 is a view seen from above of the apparatus according to Figure 1 , substantially along the line II - II in Figure 1.
- FIG. 1 there is illustrated a wall 1 to a living space 2, which is to be ventilated with fresh air from outside.
- a hole 3 is made in the wall 1 at a given distance from a hot water radiator mounted on the wall.
- This radiator has two radiator halves 4, 5 spaced from each other and is of conventional implementation with horizontal upper and lower water collecting channels 27, 28 and 29,30, respectively and vertical channels 31, 32 connecting the horizontal channels to each other.
- the size of the hole 3 is not critical, neither is its distance from the radiator 4, 5.
- a transfer means 6 has been installed between the hole 3 and radiator 4, 5 for preheating the fresh air flowing from the hole 3.
- the space 2 is preferably also supplied with an exhaust air means including a suction fan (unillustrated) to ensure a flow of fresh air through the hole 3.
- the transfer means 6 comprises two separate parts, namely a casing 7 and a drum 8 comprising a tube 8a and a frame 8b. Two opposing sides of the frame 8b rest on two angle irons at mutual spacing, these being welded to the radiator halves 4, 5, one such angle iron 9 being illustrated in Figure 1.
- the casing 7 which is double-walled, partly to prevent condensation forming on its walls and partly to deaden the sound of the air flowing through the hole 3, is provided with a lower rectangular flange 13 having a circular hole 14 situated in register with a circular hole 10 in the bottom of the casing and the tube 8a, the casing also being provided with an annular flange 15 for retaining a sealing ring 16.
- a filter 22 is exchangeably inserted in the inlet of the casing 7, for preventing foreign bodies coming into the means 6 together with the fresh air, this filter also having a certain sound-deadening effect.
- One side of the filter 22 engages against an exchangeable grating 23, the hole size and/or the number of holes of which has been selected so that a desired flow through the means 6 is obtained. The larger the space 2 is, and/or the smaller number of radiators 4, 5 in the room, the greater and/or more holes are selected for the grating 23.
- the hole 3 is made in the wall 1, the diameter of this hole being less than the inlet opening of the casing 7 and its distance from the floor of the space 2 somewhat- exceeding the distance * between the floor and the upper part of the radiator 4, 5 mounted on the wall. No measures for the wall other than making this hole are necessary.
- the drum 8 is taken down between the radiator halves to the position illustrated in the figures, where it rests on the angle irons 9, and this should suitably be carried out before a possible window board is mounted above the radiator.
- the casing 7 is then placed above the drum 8 in the position illustrated in Figure 1, the screws 19, 20 and nuts 21 being fitted in the way described above.
- the casing Before and during tightening the screws, the casing is pressed by hand to the left in Figure 1 so that the sealing ring 16 is compressed for sealing against the wall 1. Not only is a secure seal obtained by this measure but there also ensures that the means 6 can be mounted for functioning effectively even if the distance between the radiator 4, 5 and the wall 1 varies.
- Air drawn into the hole 3 into the wall 1 usually due to a sub-pressure in the room 2, flows first through the filter 22 and grating 23 and there ⁇ after through the casing 7 and down into the drum 8 to be dissipated between the radiator halves 4, 5 from the end of the tube 8a opening out at least below the upper collecting channels 27, 28 and preferably at a short distance (about 10 cm) from the bottom of the radiator.
