Herkömmliche Zündkerzen besitzen eine Masseelektrode, die seitlich angesetzt ist und mit ihrem freien Ende die Mittelelektrode übergreift. Daneben ist bekannt, ringförmige Masseelektroden vorzusehen, die konzentrisch zur Mittelelektrode angeordnet sind. Beispiele hierfür finden sich in der DE-3441997 A1 sowie der DE-2444454 A1. Bei diesen Zündkerzen ist die Masselektrode entweder auf Höhe der Mittelelektrode oder in axialer Richtung zurückgesetzt angeordnet. Bei letzterer Anordnung ist dabei zwischen Mittel- und Masseelektrode ein Isolierkörper vorgesehen, an dessen Oberfläche der Zündfunken entlangläuft. In beiden Fällen ist die Anordnung der Zündkerze bzw. der Verlauf des Zündfunkens im Bezug auf den Brennraum ungünstig. Bei den eingangs genannten konventionellen Zündkerzen liegt ein einseitiger Abrand der Mittelelektrode vor mit der Folge, daß mit zunehmender Betriebsdauer der Zündfunke bezüglich des Brennraums ungünstiger sitzt.Conventional spark plugs have a ground electrode, which is attached to the side and overlaps the center electrode with its free end. Die durch die Stege bewirkte Anordnung der Masseelektrode zeichnet sich darüber hinaus auch bei längerem Betrieb durch besondere mechanische Stabilität aus und ermöglicht den Einsatz der Zündkerzen auch in mechanisch stark beanspruchten Brennkraftmaschinen.
