- a 12 tonne main winch (not shown) is secured to the deck 2 and a cable 8 runs from it round a pulley 9 on the deck 2 to pulleys 10, 23 on one side of the A-frame 1 and rig 5. From there the cable runs across the A-frame and returns along the opposite side of the A-frame around pulleys corresponding to the pulleys 10, 23 and thence to a padeye on the deck 2.
- a 5 tonne tugger winch (not shown) is also secured to the deck 2 and a tugger cable 12 runs from it round a pulley 13 at an e3ge of the deck 2, to a pulley 14 at the apex 7 of the A--frame, from there to a pulley 15 at an opposite end of the rig 5, across the rig to a corresponding pulley (not shown) at the other side edge of the rig 5 and from there between pulleys on said other side edge of the rig and A-frame which correspond to the pulleys 15, 14, 13, after which the tugger cable runs to a fixed padeye (not shown) secured to the deck in the vicinity of the tugger winch.
- the pulleys 13 are mounted on brackets 16 secured at the edge of the deck 2, each bracket 16 having an inclined face 17 and a recess 18 capable of receiving a cylindrical stub 19 at the free end of the side arm 3 of the A-frame 1.
- Static chains 20 extend between padeyes 21 on the deck 2 and fixed mountings 22 on the apex 7 of the A-frame 1.
- the apparatus When the anchor handler transports the piling rig to the desired location the apparatus is in the position shown in Fig. 1, with the A-frame 1 held fast by means of tension in both the main cable 8 and the tugger cable 12.
- the tugger winch On arrival at the location, the tugger winch is actuated to provide maximum tension in the tugger cable 12, and with only nominal tension in the main cable 8 the A-frame 1 with the rig 5 moves on its rollers 4 towards the edge of the deck until it reaches the position shown in Fig. 2.
- the leading end of the A-frame then engages the brackets 16, preventing further linear movement towards the deck edge. In this position the leading end of the piling rig 5 extends well over the side edge of the deck, tending to tip the A-frame 1.
- the tension in the main cable 8 prevents rotation of the A-frame 1 and rig 5.
- the main cable 8 is then paid out gradually to allow controlled rotation of the A-frame 1 and rig 5 about the brackets 16, and with tension being maintained in the tugger cable 12 the position shown in Fig. 3 is reached.
- the pulleys 13 can be positioned such that tension in the tugger cable 12 initiates or assists this controlled rotation.
- the stubs 19 have entered the recesses 18 of the brackets, forming a hinge connection for easy and smooth rotation of the A-frame 1.
- the rig 5 has pivoted on the outer nose of the brackets 16 until almost upright, and is suspended by the cables 8, 12 and, through the locking pin at the hammer of the rig, from the A-frame 1.
- the A-frame 1 is at its maximum rotation determined by the static chains 20.
- the side arms 3 are then secured to the brackets 16 by shackles or similar means.
- the static chains 20 take the weight of the A-frame.
- the main cable 8 then pays out, lowering the rig 5 through the position shown in Fig. 5 until the rig rests on the sea bed for use in its piling operations. During lowering of the rig 5 the tugger cable is maintained in nominal tension to prevent fouling.
- the apparatus o-P this embodiment of the invention allows a variety of flat-decked ships to be converted into pile barges by simple fixing of winches, brackets and padeyes to the deck.
- the linear travel of the A-frame to the deck edge from its storage position allows the A-frame to be of light, cross-braced construction, and the position of the rig on top of the A-frame removes the need for the A-frame to be large enough to allow the rig to pass thorugh it on rotation.
- Heavy-duty hydraulic rams are unnecessary as the weight of the A-frame and rig can be taken by the cables 8, 12 and static chains 20.
- the construction of the A-frame and rig is such that the overall width and height are reduced as compared with conventional apparatus, thus facilitating transport of the apparatus on land from one port to another.
