Abstract

Printed products having a center fold are provided with appropriate product break structure for facilitating opening of the printed products. Such product break structure comprises a crimp structure which may be in the form of impressions or embossments. This crimp structure is provided in the region of one end of the center fold of the printed products to be opened. These crimp structures mutually converge in relation to one another and extend to a common point located on the center fold of the printed products. Each of the printed products can be opened at the center fold by applying or exerting pressure on the folded edge or spine of the printed products at the end of the center fold which is provided with the crimp structure. An opening element can enter the opening thus formed for separating the two halves of each of the printed products.

Description

The present invention relates to a method for opening printed products provided with a central fold by exerting pressure on one end of the fold back, the opening formed being intended to allow the end of an opening member to penetrate.

Such a method has become known from CH-PS 358 444 for the mechanical insertion of inserts into printed booklets provided with a central fold. However, considerable mechanical effort is required to open the printed products. The products rest on a conveyor belt with the fold back and they are held in an upright position during conveying by two guide rails arranged on both sides. Immediately before a product reaches an opening wedge, it is gripped by pressure rollers on both sides, which pass the product in the direction of conveyance, but prevent it from moving upwards. Then pressure is exerted on the lower front corner of the product with the aid of a cam disk from below, so that an opening is created in the region of the central fold, into which the opening wedge penetrates when the product is transported further.

The object of the method according to the invention is to reduce the mechanical effort required for opening to the absolute minimum, but at the same time to increase the security of the opening. If this succeeds, the method according to the invention, in addition to the task on which it is based, enables the opening of multi-sheet printed products in tabloid form, without these having to have the usual prefix. This results in a drastic reduction in paper waste, the value of which, at least in magazine printing plants, is in the millions.

The solution to this task or tasks results from the characterizing part of patent claim 1.

Es zeigen dieFurther details can be found in the attached drawing. They show

Figures 1 and 2 or 3 and 4 each a product in tabloid form still closed, but already unfolded during the application of pressure or fully.

Dank dieser Massnahme öffnet sichThe difference between the printed products 1 and 2 according to FIGS. 1 and 2 on the one hand and FIGS. 3 and 4 on the other hand is only that in the case of the product 1, the beads 3, 4 toward the end of the folded edge 5, ie. H. 3 and 4, on the other hand, converge in the opposite direction, the beads 3, 4 reaching the central fold 5 in the region of the side edge 6 in the former case. Thanks to this measure opens

As indicated in FIGS. 1 and 3 - the product 1, 2 in the middle fold 5 simply because pressure is exerted on the end of the fold back 7, as indicated by the arrow A. It is not necessary to support the products 1, 2 in the region of the side edge 6 against the application of pressure. Of course, products 1, 2 have to be kept somehow. How this happens is irrelevant. If you hold the products 1, 2 in the area of the folded edge 5 or the folded back 7, they - as shown - with the flower, i.e. H. of the open side edge 8 opposite the fold back 7, hang down so that they can be easily placed on a busbar or the like after the complete opening.

If the beads 3, 4 run as shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, so that they reach the central fold 5 at a distance from the side edge 6, they not only form a desired kink for themselves; this also occurs for the middle fold 5, in that the end of the fold back 7 can bend around the intersection of the beads 3, 4. If the beads 3, 4 run in the opposite direction (FIGS. 1 and 2), they prevent the corner from moving under pressure to one side or the other; the yielding of the fold back 7 does not, however, provide any resistance to the beads 3, 4, so that the application of pressure in turn leads with a high degree of certainty to opening in the middle fold 5, irrespective of whether the product 1, 2 consists of one, a few or a large number Double arches exist.

According to the invention, appropriately designed embossing means are provided for attaching the beads 3, 4. Their location results from the need to attach the beads 3, 4 before folding the products 1, 2.
