Abstract

A pivot assembly (1) for umbrella ribs or struts (2) comprises a notch (or runner) formed by an inner part (3) with a bore (5) for an umbrella shaft (6) and a flange portion (7) at one end of a body portion (8) the other end of which has two tongues (9), and an outer part (4) having a sleeve portion (10) on the body portion (8) of the inner part (3) and having a flange portion (11) engaging the flange portion (7) of the inner part. Ribs or "barbs" (28) on the tongues (9) prevent the inner part (3) and outer part (4) from being separated after fitting on the shaft (6). Each of a plurality of radial slits (12) in one flange portion (11) leads to a cavity (13) formed between the flange portions, and a knob end (14) of a rib or strut (2) is held captive in the cavity (13) to serve as a pivot as an adjacent flattened portion (15) slides in the slit (12).
