Claims (10)

1. Device for checking the compressibility of articles of the tobacco industry, including means (12) for causing a load having a predetermined weight to act upon a top surface of a set of articles (19) while keeping the said set on a fixed base (2), and means (28, 46, 47) for measuring the lowering of the said top surface after placking of the load, characterized in that the said means are automatic and comprise, on the one hand, means (12) for first causing a preliminary load (22) to act upon the said surface, then in addition a main load (34), and on the other hand, means (28, 46, 47) for determining the moment when the said surface has reached a stable reference level under the effect of the preliminary load alone, in order to cause the main load to act after that moment, and for measuring the lowering of the said surface under the effect the main and preliminary loads starting from the reference level.
2. Checking device according to claim 1, characterized in that the means for measuring the lowering of the said surface are connected to time-measuring means, and in that they are controlled in such a way as to carry out the measurement of the lowering repeatedly during a predetermined period of time and to display the measured value.
3. Checking device according to claim 2, characterized in that the said means comprise time-display means which are actuated during the repeated measurements of the lowering of the top surface of the stack.

Checking device according to claim 1, characterized in that it comprises a fixed frame (1), a single control unit (10) movable vertically relative to the frame, and motor means (12) capable of moving the control unit vertically on the frame, the main load (34) being suspended from the control unit, and the preliminary load (22) being suspended from the main load, while having a support surface (32) for the said main load, arranged so that the latter comes to rest upon the said support surface during the vertical movement of the control unit, when the preliminary load has come to rest upon the said top surface.
5. Device according to claim 4, characterized in that the main load (34) is joined to the control unit (10) by vertically oriented guide means (35).
6. Device according to claim 4 or claim 5, characterized in that the preliminary load is joined to the frame by vertically disposed guide means (29).

Device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the means (28, 46, 47) for measuring the lowering of the top surface of the set comprises an electronic micrometer (46) borne by the frame, the feeler (47) of which micrometer is rested vertically on a lateral finger (28) integral with the preliminary load.

Device according to claim 4, characterized in that, of the control unit and the frame, one comprises a cam (50) and the other at least one switch capable of being actuated by the cam, the said switch or switches being arranged so as to create position signals corresponding to predetermined positions of the control unit on the frame, these predetermined positions comprising at least one upper position, a position for which the preliminary load is resting upon the stack and main load is suspended from the control unit, and a position for which both loads are resting upon the stack.
9. Device according to claim 8, characterized in that the motor means (12) capable of moving the control unit vertically comprises an actuator formed of a motor (12) and a screw (13) integral with the rotor of the motor, this screw being engaged in a fixed thread integral with the frame.

Device according to any one of the claims 1 to 9, characterized in that it comprises a checking support intended to contain the said set in a predetermined position, this support being detachable, and in that the said means comprise a detector of the presence of the support on the base and initiating means reacting automatically to the transmission of a signal by the detector so as to initiate a checking cycle.
