Description

The invention relates to an adapter for a low-pressure discharge lamp with a base on one side, the base of which has at least two contact pins, the adapter consisting of a housing with a base customary for incandescent lamps and receptacles for the contact pins on the top of the housing and mating contacts receiving the contact pins in the interior of the housing are provided.

Adapters that enable the connection of discharge lamps, in particular small fluorescent lamps, directly into a lamp intended for incandescent lamps are known in various embodiments. An example of this is DE-GM 82 33 763. Here, two compact fluorescent lamps with a pin base are mounted on a body holding a ballast and ignition device. However, the shapes shown have a large width, so that the adapter cannot be used in every lamp and the possible uses are correspondingly limited.

Another type of adapter is known from US-A-3,815,080. This adapter with screw base is intended for a double-ended elongated fluorescent lamp, the connection contacts of which are located on one of the two lamp ends. The adapter housing is provided with a screw base. At the top there are receptacles with contacts for the contact pins of the lamp. The interior of the housing is made of electrical insulation material, into which a ballast transformer is embedded.

The object of the invention is to provide an adapter for a fluorescent lamp with a base on one side, which has a compact design, is easy to assemble and which ensures safe operation of the fluorescent lamp.

The adapter for a single-ended low-pressure discharge lamp with the features mentioned in the preamble of the main claim is characterized in that a cylindrical receptacle for a guide pin of the lamp base is formed on the upper part of the two-part housing and a mounting plate is arranged in the interior of the housing, which is the receptacle for the Guide pin at least partially surrounds and on which the mating contacts are attached. The counter contacts are designed as resilient contact lugs enclosing the contact pin on both sides. Furthermore, the mating contacts for attachment to the mounting plate are provided with mounting tabs and for electrical contacting of the mounting plate with contact tabs. In this way, the lamp is mechanically supported by the upper part of the two-part adapter, while the electrical contact is made separately from the upper part via the mating contacts on the mounting plate, which in turn is fastened between the lower part and the upper part of the adapter.

The ballast and ignition device for lamp operation is also mounted on the mounting plate. Conventional inductive devices are suitable for this, however, because of their lower weight and their higher luminous efficacy, electronically operating devices are often preferred.

The invention is explained in more detail below with the aid of three figures:
  • Figure 1 shows a section through an adapter according to the invention
  • Figure 2 shows an embodiment of a contact element in detail
  • Figure 3 shows a further embodiment of a contact element

The adapter 1 of FIG. 1 consists of an upper part 2 and a lower part 3, which are non-detachably fastened to one another by means of a snap connection. On the upper part 2, a cylindrical receptacle 4 is formed, in which a guide pin 5 of the base 6 of a fluorescent lamp 7 is inserted. The guide pin 5 is provided with retaining lugs (not recognizable), behind which snap springs 8 engage and thus mechanically hold the base 6 of the lamp 7 in the receptacle 4. The upper, offset part of the receptacle 4 is provided with receptacles 9 through which the contact pins 10 of the base 6 protrude into the inner part of the adapter 1.

Between the lower part 3 and the upper part 2 of the adapter 1, a mounting plate 11 is fastened by means of clamping, on which the ballast and ignition device 12 is mounted. An inductive ballast with starter or an electronic ballast is equally suitable for this. In the present exemplary embodiment, the mounting plate 11 is a printed circuit board on which the components of a high-frequency ballast are arranged. This offers the advantages of a higher luminous efficacy of the lamp as well as the significantly reduced weight compared to a conventional ballast. Furthermore, contact elements 13, 13 'are embedded in the mounting plate 11 and fastened there by interlocking their fastening tabs 14, 14' (FIGS. 2 and 3). The upper contact lugs 15, 15 'are initially bent at an acute angle to one another and then open upwards again in order to facilitate the insertion of the contact pins 10. Depending on the embodiment of the lamp, a total of two or four of these contact elements 13, 13 'are arranged on the mounting plate 11, with each contact element 13, 13' being assigned a contact pin 10 of the fluorescent lamp 7.

The contact elements 13, 13 'are preferably made of nickel-plated spring bronze, on the one hand to have a permanent spring action and corrosion resistance and on the other hand to facilitate the soldering of the contact lugs 16 (FIG. 2) to the printed circuit board 11, unless a solderless electrical connection by means of resilient contact lugs 16' (Figure 3) is preferred.

At the bottom of the lower part 3, a base 17 is also attached, as is usually used for incandescent lamps. A contact element 13 and the ballast and ignition device 12 are electrically connected to the base 17, so that the lamp 7 can be operated directly via the adapter 1 in a version of a lamp intended for incandescent lamps.
