Abstract

An impact wall for a device for picking up tennis balls comprises a collecting trough arranged at the base thereof and a ramp rising towards the court and fixed to the trough. The oblique stretched fabric (1) forming the impact wall inclined forwards is only secured at the top and at the bottom of a frame and, each vertical side part of the frame is comprised of two beams (4, 5) holding under tension said fabric by means of a spring (10).

Description

The invention relates to a baffle for a system for collecting tennis balls, at the foot of which a collecting channel for the balls is arranged, to which a ramp rising towards the playing field is connected, the baffle having a flexible covering which is fastened to a frame and the diagonally inclined covering of the baffle is only attached to the top and bottom of the frame.

Such systems as they are known for example from DE-A-2456 997 have the purpose of collecting the balls hit by a player against the baffle or the ramp and feeding them to a conveyor device which transports them to a container. A ball throwing machine is then connected to this container. The covering of the baffle has turned out to be critical for the functioning of these devices, since a certain mixture of elasticity and damping must be achieved, which leads to the balls falling into the collecting trough with as little residual energy as possible and ultimately remaining in this. According to the mentioned DE-A-2 456 997, a net or grid is arranged loosely sagging and pulled back slightly at a medium height.

In DE-A-2 334 849 it is proposed to use webs made of "elastically damping" material and to put them under tension, although there is no further information about which material should have these properties. From US-A-2 280 376 it is known to provide a series of inclined nets in front of the baffle designed as a net, which prevent the balls played against the wall from rebounding. However, the implementation of this proposal is rather complex and the durability of the large number of networks used is questionable.

Diese Lösung ist mit einem größeren, erheblichen Platzbedarf verbunden und zudem auf lotrechte Prallwände beschränkt.GB-A-1 223 579 also intercepts an impacting tennis ball in such a way that it is not thrown back into the field. For this purpose, a safety net is attached to side swivel arms, which allow the entire net to swing out when a ball hits it. This solution is associated with a larger, considerable space requirement and is also limited to vertical baffle walls.

Die WO-A-80/01 650 zeigt noch lose hängende Gewebsbahnen, die die auftreffenden Bälle relativ unabhängig von ihrer Anfangsgeschwindigkeit auf etwa dieselbe Endgeschwindigkeit bringen sollen, mit welcher sie von einer starren Prallfläche wieder zurückspringen.WO-A-80/01 650 shows loosely hanging webs of fabric which are intended to bring the impacting balls to approximately the same final speed, relatively independently of their initial speed, at which they bounce back from a rigid impact surface.

Finally, covers have also become known which are inclined forward and only attached to the top and bottom of the frame (US-A-4 082 271), but these serve to throw the impacting balls back into the playing field.

In contrast to the known devices, the invention is intended to make it possible to create a baffle wall for which almost any covering can be used, which from the point of view of durability, cleanability, weather resistance, and the like. can be selected, and the balls hit against them fall into the collecting trough with as little residual energy as possible.

According to the invention, this object is achieved in that each upright side part of the frame consists of two hingedly connected, under the action of a spring stretching the struts.

Since the width of the halls, for which the system according to the invention is to be used, fluctuates within wide limits, it makes sense to manufacture the baffle walls in sections of constant length that can be strung together.

In order to prevent the upholstered surfaces from being interrupted here by the upright side parts, it is recommended that the covering protrude above them on both sides. This prevents balls in these areas from bouncing back into the field undamped.

In a preferred embodiment of the invention it is provided that the upper spar is articulated at the upper end of the lower spar and forms a two-armed lever, and the spring designed as a tension spring engages between the shorter lever arm and the lower spar, the end of the longer lever arm being the the covering on the top edge of the frame is arranged. This design allows a particularly simple construction, which can be changed in a simple manner in terms of the extent of damping and also in the inclination, in particular if the upper spar has several bearing points and both spars have several suspension options for the spring. In experiments, an aspect ratio for the two lever arms of 1: 6 and an oblique inclination of the upper spar of approximately 50 ° to the vertical has proven to be favorable.

It is also possible to design the upper spar as a one-armed lever, which leads to a very compact design of the device. In this case, the spring which keeps the covering tensioned is a compression spring, for example a gas spring of a known type, and it is possible to accommodate it in the interior of the lower bar.

The invention allows some freedom in the choice of the covering material. Therefore, if the arrangement is to be set up outdoors, efforts will be made in particular to limit the wind pressure and, in this sense, to choose a net as the covering material. Advantageously, it is provided that strips of covering material hang freely from the covering running between the upper and lower edge strips of the frame: in this case, balls hitting with little force are already removed from these paths caught and deflected downwards Balls hit harder lead to a bulging of the covering itself and to a change in the angle between the side rails of the frame.

Darstellung.Presentation.

The baffle according to FIGS. 1 and 2 essentially consists of a covering 1 carried by side parts and inclined towards the front. The covering runs between upper and lower edge strips 13, 12, which preferably protrude slightly from the side parts. At the foot of the covering 1 there is a collecting trough 3 through which the tennis balls - in the exemplary embodiment by means of a screw conveyor 15 - are transported away and then fed to a ball throwing machine.

Each side part is composed of two bars 4, 5, which are connected via a joint 8. Each lower spar 4 stands vertically in a base frame 14, which also carries the collecting channel 3 and on which the only indicated ramp 2 with its sloping area is arranged so that it can be swung up.

The joint 8 is provided at the upper end of the lower spar 4 and supports the upper spar 5 which forms a two-armed lever, the longer lever arm 5 "having approximately six times the length of the shorter lever arm 5 '. The free end of the longer lever arm 5" bears the Upper edge strip 13 of the covering 1 and on the free end region of the shorter lever arm 5 'engages a tension spring 10, the other end of which is suspended approximately in the middle on the lower bar 4. With this design, an elastic tension and at the same time damping suspension of the covering 1 with a slight inclination towards the front is achieved in a simple manner, which by the choice of the spring 10, preferably also by the choice of the points of application of the spring 10 and the lever arm ratio which can be changed by several bearing points, can be determined.

Strips 9 of the covering material, which is preferably network-shaped, hang loosely from the covering 1. As a result, the overall damping capacity of the device is increased and balls hit less strongly. are already intercepted by the strips 9.

When not in use, the ramp 2 can be folded up, so that the space required for the entire device is very small.

Fig. 2 shows in detail the attachment of the lower edge bar 12, which is combined with the fixation of the spars 4. 1, which on the one hand carry the ramp 2 and on the other hand form part of the baffle wall, are provided with pins 18 in accordance with the lateral spacing of the bars 4. The lower edge strip 12 is first plugged onto this pin 18, to which the covering 1 is fastened by means of a clamping strip 17. The lower bars 4 are then placed on the pin 18 and the lower edge strip 12 is thereby fixed.

In the exemplary embodiment according to FIG. 3, the springs between the upper and lower spar are designed as compression springs 11, for example as commercially available gas springs. The compression springs 11 are pivotally mounted in the interior of the lower spar 4 by means of a pivot pin 16 and engage in a recess 7 of a pivotable pin 19, onto which the upper spar 5 can be attached. This arrangement is characterized by a particularly small space requirement. The relatively large spring force due to the small lever arm, for example of 800 N, can be easily achieved with commercially available gas springs.
