Abstract

The walking aid device comprises a front frame and a rear frame hinged to one another so as to enable a limited pivoting of one frame with respect to the other about a transverse axis parallel to the planes of both frames.

Description

The subject of the invention is an apparatus intended to facilitate the ambulation and the functional rehabilitation of people with disabilities of the lower limbs.

We know that these people suffer from their lack of autonomy. The feeling of dependence of those around them often leads to unfavorable psychic effects with loss of self-confidence and withdrawal to the easy solution that is the wheelchair.

It is therefore important to provide disabled people with appropriate rehabilitation equipment.

Various devices of this type are found on the market. These devices are often in the form of a tubular cage, surrounding the disabled person on the front and on the sides up to hip height. These devices generally rest on the ground by four feet, provided with shoes or casters. In the case of the hoofed device, the disabled person must at each step lift the device to move it a small distance, which is only possible if he can stand on his legs and if he is sufficiently valid of the upper limbs. According to a known improvement, the device of the type described comprises in the middle of the front part of the joints, making it possible to move, by sliding, alternately, the left or right parts of the device.

This improvement makes it possible to avoid lifting the device at each step, but only if the walking area does not have a steep drop (curb edge etc.). On the other hand, when pushing one half of the device forward, the disabled can only support with one hand on the other half, which is then stationary. This requires sufficient force in both arms and moreover requires at each step a change in the equilibrium position not only in the direction of progression, but also laterally. The replacement of the support shoes by rollers necessarily results in a complication of the device, resulting in particular from the need to mount brakes.

A walking aid device according to the precharacterizing part of claim 1 is described in patent US-A-2 855 024. This known device has a tubular frame, essentially consisting of two frames, the anterior l other posterior, both having the general shape of an inverted "U", articulated one on the other so as to allow a limited pivoting of a frame relative to the other around a transverse axis , parallel to the planes of said frames, and secured to one of said frames. In the rest position, the walking aid device therefore rests on the ground by four points, namely by the ends of the uprights of the front frame and of the rear frame. An adjustable friction attenuator is provided at the points of articulation. A spiral spring arranged around the articulation axis and fixed on the one hand to a pivot element and on the other hand to the rear frame serves to return the rear frame to the closed position. A freewheel device allows the return movement of the rear frame without the resistance of the friction attenuator.

A similar walking aid is also described in US-A-2 738 830 according to which telescopic damping units with cylinder and piston with a built-in helical spring are pivotally connected to the two frames to damp the movement. and recall the frames to the closed position.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple, light and space-saving aid for walking aid which does not have the disadvantages of the devices of the prior art while combining the advantages of high functional reliability and great stability.

A cet effet l'appareil d'aide à la marche selon l'invention comporte les éléments de la partie caractéri- sante de la revendication 1.To this end, the walking aid device according to the invention comprises the elements of the characterizing part of claim 1.

The mechanical elements of each articulated connection between the two frames as well as the stop, the counter-stop and the helical spring are preferably housed in a case so as to avoid any accident by hanging clothes.

Other advantageous features of the walking aid device are included in the dependent claims.

In these figures, similar elements bear identical references.

4).Fig. 1 shows the uprights 1 and 2 of the front frame, connected by the tubular element 3 furnished with a padded sleeve 5. The lower ends of the uprights 1 and 2 are provided with non-slip shoes 4, for example made of rubber. The transverse elements 9 and 10 (see also fig. 4) form part of the rear frame of the walking aid device according to the invention. About halfway up each upright we see the front edges of the cover 7 and the bottom 8 of the hinge boxes 13 (see fig. 4).

In the example illustrated, the boxes are fixed to the uprights (1,2) by welding along the front edge of their bottom 8.

Fig. 2 shows the apparatus according to the invention in the folded position, the uprights of the front element being parallel to those of the rear element. As can be seen, the cover 7 of the housing 13 com carries a bore (19, fig. 5) through which passes a tubular end 14 'of the rear frame. The dotted lines (like those of FIG. 3) will be used later to describe the operation of the walking aid device according to the invention.

Fig. 3 shows the apparatus according to the invention, the front frame having tilted forward by about 35 ° relative to the rear element.

5).Fig. 4 shows all of the parts already mentioned, in perspective. The element 9, the pivot axis of the device, enters through the bottoms 8 in the articulation boxes 13 and fits by its ends 14 in tubular elements 14 ′ carried by the uprights (11, 12) of the frame posterior of the apparatus according to the invention, (see fig. 5).

The arrow F indicates the downward adjustment of the level of the handle 5 by means of the telescopic system 6.

Fig. 5 shows in more detail the housing 13 and the articulation used in the example illustrated. In this example, each upright (1, 2) of the front frame of the device according to the invention comprises a partially closed housing 13. The front edge of the bottom 8 of each housing is welded to the upright concerned. The bottom 8 is crossed by the end 14 of the pivot axis 9. In the housing is also incorporated a stop 17 whose axis 15 is constituted in the variant illustrated by a threaded rod 15. The tubular end 14 s' fits into the tubular element 14 ′ of the rear upright 11. Each upright 11, 12 also carries a counter-stop 18 which cooperates with the stop 17 to limit the maximum angle of the pivoting to a suitable value. The cover 7 closes the housing, the bores 19 and 20 corresponding respectively to the tubular end 14 'and to the threaded rod 15. The screwing of the nut 16 on the end of the threaded rod 15 keeps the cover in place.

Various means are within the reach of the skilled person to adjust the distance crossed by the device at each pivoting movement of a frame relative to the other. We could for example screw a bolt through a bore in the flange 21 'of the housing or provide sliding means to increase or decrease the opening located at the bottom corner on the right side of the housing.

Likewise, a damping means is provided for softening the opening of the device, that is to say the tilting of one of the two frames relative to the other, which makes it possible to make use more flexible.

Fig. 6 shows one of the housings 13 containing a damping and helical return spring 21 surrounding the tubular element 14 'and comprising a first arm 22 at one of its ends attached to the counter-stop 18' of the upright 11 or 12 and a second arm 23 bearing against the threaded rod 15. The helical spring 21 constantly reminds the rear frame to its parallel position (folded position of the device) to the front frame and absorbs the tilting towards the front of the front frame. Fig. 6 also shows two adjustable bolts 24, 25 provided to limit the pivoting of one frame relative to the other in both directions.

Fig. 7 shows a damping system with compressed air cylinder 26 attached on one side to an upright 1, 2 of the front frame and on the other side to the 18 "counter-stop of an upright 11, 12 of the rear frame .

Fig. 8 shows a damping stopper 27 of elastomeric material which can be used instead of the stopper 17 to soften the opening of the device.

Fig. 9 shows an alternative embodiment of the walking aid device according to the invention. The device comprises a single articulation unit, mounted on a 3 ′ extension of the anterior inverted “U” frame.

At the start, the user holds the device more or less vertically (position fig. 2) in front of him by resting on the handle 5. By pulling the arms back or slightly straightening the bust, the user transfers his weight on the uprights of the rear frame and, by making use of the articulation incorporated in the housing, it rocks the front frame forward, in the direction of travel, at an angle of for example 35 ° (see fig. 3). By tilting the bust slightly forward, the user slides his weight slowly over the front uprights, diagonally stitched on the floor. The user's legs are then partially freed from the weight of the body which allows him to train his legs in the direction of travel. By this movement, the user accentuates the support on the uprights of the front frame by straightening it simultaneously vertically. The uprights of the rear frame, freed from the load, tilt forward around the pivot axis and come to be stored by gravity parallel to the uprights of the front frame. Thus the starting position for the next step is restored.

The walking aid device according to the invention therefore serves as a sort of front cane.

The frontal position ensures stable support in all circumstances. Even if the user, taken in a fit of weakness, backs up before completing a step, the uprights of the rear frame immediately tilt backwards, restoring a stable position on four support points.

Various modifications can be made to the apparatus described. One can for example block the pivoting movement of the frames in any intermediate position by a ratchet system, incorporated in the housing 13. Such modifications are within the reach of those skilled in the art and do not depart from the scope of the invention delimited by the claims.

Claims (6)

1. A walking aid having a tubular chassis, comprising a forward frame and a rearward frame pivotally mounted on the forward frame by means of a joint which permits limited pivoting of one frame relative to the other about a transverse horizontal axis parallel to the planes of the two frames between a first closed position and a second open position, and comprising at the pivot position an abutment (17; 27) carried by the forward frame and a stop (18') carried by the rearward frame to limit opening and closing movement and means to cushion opening movement of the frames and to return the frames to the closed position and comprising a spring (21) disposed about the pivot axis, characterised in that the spring (21) is a resilient helical return spring having a first free arm (23) engaging a fixed element (15) carried by the forward frame and a second free arm (22) fixed to the stop (18') of the rearward frame.
2. A walking aid according to claim 1, characterised in that the abutment (17; 27) is disposed below the pivot axis and between the pivot axis and the plane of the forward frame and serves equally to limit the return movement in the closed position.
3. A walking aid according to claim 1 or claim 2, characterised in that the abutment (27) is of elastomeric material.
4. A walking aid according to one of claims 1 to 3, characterised in that the pivot between the two frames is disposed in a housing (13), the helical spring (21), the abutment (17; 27) and stop (18') also being within this housing (13).
5. A walking aid according to claim 4, characterised in that two adjustments screws (24, 25) are fixed to the housing (13), these adjustment screws (24, 25) being able to be adjusted to limit the angular movement of the rearward frame.
6. A walking aid according to any preceding claim, characterised in that the rearward frame carries at least one angled head pivotted to the forward frame at the intersection of its two arms esentially orthogonally, one of these arms being fixed to the tubular chassis of the rearward frame and the other arm forming the stop (18'), and in that the abutment (17; 27) is positioned between the two arms of this angled head to limit relative movement between the two frames by cooperation with the two arms of the angled head.
