Abstract

A surface covering has its underside next to the surface to be covered. Opposite the underside is the visible top side. This covering consists of a plastics material and is self-adhesive on its underside. The plastics material is in the form of a web which is self-adhesive on its underside. It can also take the form of a three-dimensional structure which is self-adhesive on its underside or of mutually independent pieces.

Description

The invention relates to a covering for a surface to be covered, which extends with its underside on the surface and whose top opposite the underside represents a visible surface.

Such coverings have proven themselves well as floor coverings. The initial fears that the self-adhesive covering can not be clamped tightly enough with a bottom is aufqebracht elaq on the B have been proven wrong. Rather, the hopes have been confirmed that such coverings can be laid quickly and easily, so that they can also be applied to a floor by laypeople. The installed coverings show neither the tendency to come off the floor after installation, nor the waves that are frequently observed and feared in other installations.

These good successes had given rise to further tests with self-adhesive coverings. Until now, such coverings could only be laid on a smooth, leveled floor, so that they could be largely attached with the adhesive applied to the floor. In addition, such coverings had the disadvantage that they usually consist of a relatively difficult to deform plastic. These plastic sheets are sold in rolls. Until they are laid, they take the form of these rolls and can therefore only be adapted to the particular spatial conditions in which the web is to be laid with considerable effort. On the other hand, the adhesive applied to the floor or to the back of the web results in a relatively quick connection between the covering and the floor, so that subsequent corrections in the cut are very difficult to compensate for. Just laying Such sheeting has so far been reserved only for the relevant experts, if it should be ensured that the sheeting should be laid properly and without any laying errors. In addition, such sheets were very often made of plastics that bonded with some of the adhesives to be considered. These connections not infrequently led to the fact that the already laid plastic sheet aged relatively quickly and was therefore unsightly. Special care and relevant specialist knowledge must therefore be used when selecting the adhesive for the purpose of laying such sheets. If such conditions were not met, the laid tracks quickly became unsightly and had to be replaced.

The object of the present invention is therefore to improve the covering of the type mentioned in the introduction so that it can be applied to the surface in a simple manner without the risk of selecting wrong adhesives and that the covering is relatively simple in relation to the respective floor design can be adjusted.

This object is achieved in that the covering consists of plastic and is self-adhesive on its underside.

Such a covering can be attached to the surface to be covered in each case without considerable difficulty, regardless of its consistency. This attachment can be done on flat and uneven surfaces. The plastic not only adapts to the surface design, but also sticks regardless of its respective design. The self-adhesive underside is designed so that it corresponds to the respective consistency of the plastic. With particularly un Flexible plastics use a fast-setting, high-strength adhesive, while plastics that are easy to form do not have to make such high demands on the adhesive force of the self-adhesive underside. In particular with regard to the protective film already known from the main application, the moment at which a connection is established between the surface to be glued and the covering can be precisely determined. This moment occurs when the protective film is removed from the self-adhesive underside. This separation of the protective film can be carried out continuously depending on the progress of the laying work, so that the covering can be gradually glued to the surface to be covered in small surface sections. This slowly progressing gluing process shows its advantages especially when the covering to be laid is particularly inflexible and does not like to give up the roll shape it took on during transport.

According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the plastic is designed as a web that is self-adhesive on its underside. The laying difficulties already described occur particularly when laying such webs. These tracks have large areas that laypeople can hardly adapt to the area to be covered. With the help of the self-adhesive underside, such large areas can also be adapted to the needs of the area to be covered. Even perpendicular surfaces can be easily covered in this way. The sheets equipped with a self-adhesive underside can also be attached to a surface designed as a ceiling without difficulty, without the need to permanently expose the paneled surface to a pressure load For example, when covering floors by heavy pieces of furniture or constant walking on the clad surface.

Further details of the invention will become apparent from the following detailed description and the accompanying drawings, in which a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated, for example.

  • 2 shows a cross section through a covering with a self-adhesive layer,
  • 3 is a plan view of a web with a partially grained and partially smooth surface,

A covering essentially consists of an underside 2 adjacent to a surface 1 to be clad, a layer 3 made of plastic and an upper side 4 running essentially plane-parallel. The underside 2 is self-adhesive. This design can be brought about by the fact that the plastic forming the layer 3 has self-adhesive properties in the area of the underside 2. In addition, however, it is also conceivable that a self-adhesive layer 4 is applied to the underside 2. This self-adhesive layer 4 can for example consist of a synthetic resin. The synthetic resin can be an adhesive, for example a hot melt adhesive, a dispersion adhesive or a solvent-containing adhesive.

The layer 3 can be designed as a web 5, which is cut according to the respective configuration of the surface 1 in order to be able to apply the web 5 to the surface 1 in a well-covering manner. In order to be able to adapt the web 5 to the surface 1, the web 5 is cut according to the design of the surface 1. During the adaptation of the web 5 to the surface 1, the self-adhesive layer 4 is covered by a film 6, so that the self-adhesive layer 4 cannot develop its self-adhesive force during the cutting to the disadvantage of the person carrying out the cutting. In this way, it should be prevented that during the adaptation of the web 5 to the surface 1 there is already adhesion between the web 5 and the surface 1. In addition, parts of the layer 3 which have been cut off from the web 5 should not adhere firmly to the underside 2.

The film 6 extends plane-parallel to the underside 2 and covers the self-adhesive layer 4, so that it extends between the film 6 and the underside 2. After the web 5 has been cut, the film 6 can be removed from the underside 2, so that the web 5 can be glued to the surface 1 with its underside 2.

The self-adhesive layer 4 can cover the entire underside 2 as a coherent layer. In addition, it is possible to choose all of the embodiments for the self-adhesive layer which are already known from the main application. In particular, it should be remembered to form the self-adhesive layer in the form of straight strips 7, strips in zigzag 8 and as individual self-adhesive points 9. The form in which the self-adhesive layer is applied to the underside 2 depends on the type of surface 1, the type of adhesive used to produce the self-adhesive layer 4 and the plastic from which the layer 3 is made. For example, for the production of the self-adhesive layer 4, an adhesive which has the ability to produce a good adhesive bond between the surface 1 and the underside 2 under the influence of heat has proven successful. With regard to the self-adhesive formation of the bottom 2, reference is made to the features of the main application. Essentially, it should be remembered to chemically treat the underside 2 of the layer 3 made of plastic so that the plastic has an adhesive effect in the area of the underside 2.

It is also conceivable, similarly to the floor covering of the main application, to cover the underside 2 with a coherent layer 4 which shows self-adhesive effects. In addition, individual points 10 can protrude from this self-adhesive layer 4, in the area of which layer 3 adheres particularly intensively to surface 1. There are areas 11 between the individual points 10 which show less intensive adhesion than in the area of points 10.

These areas 11 allow a shift of the layer 3 on the surface 1 if, for example, the layer 3 expands under the influence of heat. In particular in the case of a spatially designed layer 3, as is shown, for example, in FIGS. 4 and 5, such an embodiment of the self-adhesive layer 4 can be of great advantage in order to be able to take into account the spatially curved structure of the surface 1.

Finally, it is conceivable to produce the layer 3 in such a way that it is provided with a particularly hard-wearing cover 13 on its visible surface 12 facing away from the self-adhesive layer 4. This cover 13 can consist of a particularly hard but transparent layer. However, it is also conceivable to make the layer 3 in the area of the visible surface 12 so hard by means of a corresponding chemical or physical treatment, for example glazing, that it can withstand great stresses. Such covers make the entire layer 3 so rigid that their laying on an appropriately designed surface 1 has previously been particularly difficult. In most cases, double-sided adhesive tapes were not sufficient. When using liquid adhesives, there was a risk that such layers 3 would bulge up again from the bonded surface 1 without the surface 1 being bonded. In addition, when using such adhesives, the surface 1 must be prepared in a particularly careful manner for the gluing in order to ensure that the adhesive was able to bring about a uniformly good adhesion between the surface 1 and the underside 2 in all areas of the underside 2. For this purpose, area 1 had to be leveled very carefully will. However, the layers 3 provided with a self-adhesive underside 2 do not require such careful preparation of the surface 1. The self-adhesive underside 2 adapts to any surface configuration of the surface 1, so that a good connection is achieved with the surface 1. It is also conceivable to apply the covering to an old, already worn floor covering without this having to be removed from the surface 1 beforehand. Despite the flexural rigidity of the plastic used, good adhesion between the underside 2 and the surface 1 is achieved on the uneven surface 1.

An embodiment of the covering in the form of individual surface pieces 14 serves, for example, to trim the interiors of motor vehicles. Such coverings are very often exposed to high levels of contamination, so that they need to be removed and cleaned from surface 1 from time to time. In these cases, it must be expected that the coverings will deform despite careful handling. Despite such deformations, the coating of the underside with a self-adhesive layer 4 is sufficient to be able to firmly connect the surface pieces 14 to the surface 1.

Die Dicke dieses Vließes beträgt etwa 1,5 mm.The self-adhesive layer 4 can be applied directly to the layer 3. Care must be taken that the self-adhesive layer 4 establishes a good connection with the layer 3. For this reason, the plastic forming the layer 3 and an adhesive forming the self-adhesive layer 4, for example, must be chemically matched to one another. In such cases in which such coordination cannot be brought about, it is conceivable to separate between the self-adhesive layer 4 and to provide layer 3 with an intermediate layer 15 which, on the one hand, leads to a satisfactory connection with layer 3 and, on the other hand, is able to absorb the self-adhesive layer 4. Care must be taken to ensure that the intermediate layer 15 adheres to the layer 3 with good adhesion in order to prevent the intermediate layer 15 from detaching from the layer 3. On the other hand, there must also be good adhesion as well as good compatibility between the self-adhesive layer 4 and the intermediate layer 15. In addition, the intermediate layer 15 must have a high mechanical strength in order to be able to transmit the forces required to hold the covering to the surface 1. Finally, it should be remembered that the intermediate layer 15 helps to compensate for unevenness in the adjacent surfaces of the layer 3 on the one hand and the self-adhesive layer 4 on the other. For the purpose of this compensation, the intermediate layer 15 is rolled onto the layer 3, for example. The intermediate layer 15 can consist of fibers, for example a fleece. The thickness of this fleece is about 1.5 mm.

The plastic forming the layer 3 can consist, for example, of a thermoplastic. However, it is also conceivable to use thermosets for this purpose. Layer 3 has a particularly good surface hardness if it consists of a polyvinyl chloride. Such PVC coverings have therefore found widespread use. Mixing components can be mixed into the polyvinyl chloride, for example asbestos can be mixed into the PVC.
