Definitions
- the present invention relates to the field of the manufacture of bars, wires or profiles by hot transformation possibly followed by cold transformation. More particularly, the invention relates to a new process for producing a composite piece for hot transformation as well as a method for manufacturing products which are difficult to transform using such a composite piece.
- US Pat. No. 2,050,298 describes a process for manufacturing fine stainless steel wires by deformation, for example by drawing or by rolling, of a piece composed of a plurality of elements in a matrix of metallic powder or plastic acting as a separating material between the individual elements of the bundle, with a tubular sheath as container, the matrix constituting the largest part of the volume.
- patent FR 1 147.236 describes hot spinning in very small sections, for example of metal wires which are very difficult to work hot, by means of a composite spinning process where the bundle of wires is surrounded by a thin casing in mild steel, casing removed after spinning by chemical or mechanical means.
- Patent FR 1,150,035 describes the coating of the slug to be spun with an envelope of metal which is easy to spin and the interposition of a lubricant such as glass between the spinning tools and the slug.
- 3,394,213 describes a process for manufacturing filaments by hot transformation followed by cold drawing, in which a composite billet is used, comprising an outer sheath, waterproof threads and optionally a powder binder, the outer sheath being for example Monel 400 or mild steel and the blank wires in stainless steel AISI 304.
- Patent FR 2 347 989 describes a process for transforming massive pieces into refractory alloy, and more precisely a process for hot plastic deformation of said pieces , from a composite assembly comprising at least said part or parts (of refractory alloy) placed in an envelope with a thickness greater than 0.5 mm and of resistance to hot plastic deformation less than that of the refractory alloy , this envelope being constituted, in the case of hot spinning of several blank wires, either by a cylinder pierced by several channels which receive the blank wires and by a welded end plug, either by a stack of externally cylindrical and internally cylindrical tubes and by two welded plugs.
- the advantage of an envelope, sheath and sometimes matrix, easier to deform than the product to be obtained in a small section has been recognized.
- the block or the composite billet obtained is all the more difficult to deform the thicker the envelope.
- the sheathing material gradually fills the voids existing between the sheathed wires and then plays the role of a matrix transmitting the stretching and forming.
- the inner or matrix cladding like the rest of the outer casing, acts as a lubricant, favorable to the good surface condition of the products processed under sheath.
- the outer shell acts as a protective coating against contamination of processed products during hot work. After the end of hot work or after part of the cold processing which follows it, the envelope is removed, most often by chemical dissolution.
- the constitution of this composite assembly is usually complicated and expensive because it uses in particular either an external envelope having at least one end of the IECE and a tubular sheath or a solid block pierced with one or more channels, and it often includes welding and optionally machining.
- the object of the invention is to provide a simpler and therefore less costly process for the constitution of such composite plots. More specifically, the invention relates to a new process for producing a composite piece in which one or more blanks of metal or alloy difficult to transform are arranged in a matrix having a resistance to plastic deformation when hot lower than that of said metal or alloy, process characterized in that this matrix is formed only with agglomerated powder, without sheath or tubular envelope.
- agglomerated powder is understood here to mean any powder of which the grains are integral, whatever the process used to achieve it, for example compression, sintering, or all of the two.
- the agglomeration of the powder is at least partly carried out by compression slug, for example by isostatic compression in the vicinity of the ambient temperature between 100 and 300 MPa, and this compression is optionally followed by sintering, which then improves the agglomeration of the powder.
- the pressure used for compression can also be greater than 300 MPa.
- Agglomeration can also be obtained by sintering the block without prior compression, preferably using a binder which causes sufficient agglomeration and cohesion of the packed powder and is totally or partially removed by the sintering treatment.
- the powder used can be essentially iron powder.
- compression can then be followed by an oxidation between 200 and 600 ° C. and then optionally by impregnation with a liquid lubricant or pasty.
- a solid lubricating powder can also be incorporated into the powder constituting the matrix, whether or not compression is followed by sintering or, in the case where most of the powder used is iron powder, with an oxidation between 200 and 600 ° C.
- Such extra lengths are obtained either only by producing a piece of which the agglomerated powder matrix is longer than the blanks contained, or by adding at least one end of the piece of an extra length block having a resistance to plastic deformation hot lower than that of the metal or alloy of the blanks.
- the addition of the block or blocks of extra length can then be made either by juxtaposition at the time of the hot transformation, or in advance by welding as an alternative to increasing the extra thickness of powder at the ends of the piece.
- the process of the invention is particularly useful for the hot transformation of blanks into a refractory alloy containing at least 35% by weight of (Co + Ni).
- Figures 1 to 3 illustrate a procedure for constituting the block before agglomeration, using the method of the invention.
- a rigid cylindrical sheath (1) is provided with a longer flexible sheath (2) whose ends (3) and (3 ') are folded around the ends of the rigid sheath (1), and the coated sheath (1) + (2) is arranged vertically on the work surface around a rigid or semi-rigid closure plug or plug (4) ( Figure 1).
- a spacer (5) pierced with holes having dimensions slightly greater than those of the straight sections of the blanks is placed on the plug (4) and a second spacer (6) comprising, around its periphery, cells or orifices (7) is put in place , preferably around 2/3 the height of the blanks, this second spacer being then held at 3 or 4 points by a stirrup.
- the roughly metal or alloy blanks (8) are then threaded through the two spacers, the holes of which correspond.
- the powder (9) is poured into the mold thus formed, it flows through the cells or orifices such as (7) and is compacted by impact on the side of the rigid sheath (1) or by vibration of the whole mold. The powder is thus supplied and packed until it reaches the vicinity of the second spacer (6).
- the spacer (6) is then removed and the filling of powder and its compaction are completed ( Figure 2), in suré p aisseur (10) relative to the end (11) of the blanks (8).
- a semi-rigid plug (12) for example made of hard synthetic rubber, is then placed on the powder and the end (3) of the flexible sheath (2) is closed on the plug (12) by known means. (13), for example using pliers or a clamp.
- FIG. 3 represents the piece ready for the isostatic compression operation, after the last constitution operations which will be described.
- the pad (4) and the spacer (5) being removed, the filling and packing of the powder are terminated with an extra thickness (14) relative to the end (15) of the blanks (8).
- the constitution of the piece is completed by the installation of a semi-rigid plug (16) and the closure of the end (3 ') of the flexible sheath (2) under primary vacuum.
- the flexible sheath (2) then constitutes a sealed bag plated on the piece (17) and the plugs (12) and (16), the powder (9) of the piece being packed but not yet agglomerated, the piece is then ready for the 'isostatic compression operation, the rigid sheath (1) ( Figure 2) being separated.
- the isostatic compression of the piece thus sheathed (FIG. 3) is carried out at ambient temperature under a pressure of the order of 200 MPa and which can vary, in particular according to the nature and the particle size of the powders, from 100 to 300 MPa.
- the piece is. freed from the flexible sheath (2) and the semi-rigid plugs (12) and (16), it is then deformed as illustrated by FIG. 4 relating to Example 2.
- the rough rods had a hardness of HV30 570/585.
- a plot for spinning was made from 68 blank rods ⁇ 6.2 mm, unit length 490 mm weighing in total 9.05 kg and 30 kg of iron powder with a particle size between 0.02 and 0.15 mm .
- the rigid sheath (1) had an internal diameter of 134 mm, a thickness of 3 mm and a length of 600 mm.
- the flexible rubber sheath (2) was 2 mm thick.
- the obturator pad (4) was 30 mm thick, the spacers (5) and (7) were 4 mm thick, and had 68 holes y 6.3 to 6.5 mm staggered with an average spacing of 5 mm.
- the piece (17) enclosed in the flexible sheath (2) was treated by isostatic compression at room temperature under 210 MPa. It was then stripped of the sealed sheath (2) and had the shape shown schematically in Figure 4 with swollen ends.
- the central part (18) of the bole of the rabbit (17 ') deformed by isostatic compression had an average diameter of 119 mm.
- the slug (17 ') was sintered at 1150 ° C under hydrogen.
- the shape of this piece (17 ') was little modified by sintering.
- the piece was machined according to the contour (19) to a diameter of 115 mm and to a length of 520 mm, leaving an extra length (20) of agglomerated powder of the order of 15 mm at each end of the machined piece ( 21).
- the piece (20) provided with the two extra-length blocks (22) was spun at 1160 ° C., temperature of the front face of the piece, in greased spinning with a container with a smaller diameter ⁇ 119 mm and a circular orifice die ⁇ 22.5 mm, the auxiliary means being known to those skilled in the art.
- the maximum pressure developed in this spinning was 14,000 kg / cm2 (1370 MPa).
- the presence of the block of extra long front in mild steel and the extra length of agglomerated iron powder made it possible to move back the part of the piece containing the refractory blanks and therefore having a high resistance to deformation, and consequently to reduce the pressure peak from the start of the spinning.
- the composite extruded bar obtained was 12.4 m long, it was immersed in a 40% nitric acid bath until the iron matrix was completely dissolved, and after the ends had been dropped, 75% was obtained. of the initial weight of the refractory blanks in the form of rods ⁇ 1.2 mm, within the diameter tolerances imposed by the use.
- the piece thus prepared was placed in an isostatic compression chamber and compressed under a pressure of 210 MPa.
- the billet was sintered the billet at 1150 ° C under hydrogen. Then it was machined to obtain a diameter of 73 mm and a length of 225 mm. A 25 mm long mild steel extra length block was then welded at each end.
- the bar obtained was immersed in a 40% nitric acid bath until the iron matrix was completely dissolved. After dropping, 75% of the initial product of the blanks was obtained in the form of rods with a straight section 2.3 x 1.6 mm, homothetic to that of the blanks, with in particular perfectly preserved sharp angles.
- This process is applicable to plots of land and to plots of land other than those described by way of example. This process also applies to other forms of blanks in metals or alloys which are difficult to transform, to other forms of processed products and to other processing methods. Finally, the processing difficulties which can make the use of the process of the invention interesting are of various kinds.
- the composite plots of the invention can have various shapes, not only cylindrical of revolution, but also for example parallelepipedic, flattened or ovalized.
- the matrix of powder agglomerated by compression possibly supplemented by sintering or by oxidation decreases the overall resistance to deformation, plays a lubricating role and protects against shocks and various alterations.
- the procedure described in Example 1 can be simplified, blocks or pancakes of precompressed powder associated with layers of powder are thus advantageously used. It may also be advantageous to combine various types and / or qualities of powders in the same plot.
- the difficult-to-process blanks placed in the powder matrix have a variety of shapes, not only circular cylindrical but also profiles of various sections including dishes and tubes.
- the products transformed by the hot deformation followed possibly by a deformation at a lower temperature and / or cold - the elimination of the matrix being made either after the hot transformation, or during the transformation which follows it - have various forms.
- the hot processing of the composite piece is done by various processes such as spinning, forging, hammering, rolling or drawing. This hot plastic deformation of the composite piece optionally follows a warm or cold plastic deformation, by one of the methods known to those skilled in the art, for example for the purpose of dimensional calibration.
- the method makes it possible to economically solve difficult transformation problems, due to the high hardness of the metal or alloy transformed. This is the case of Example 2.
- the method also applies to difficulties linked to the brittleness of the metals or alloys to be transformed thanks to the triple role of the agglomerated powder matrix: reducing the resistance to deformation, lubricating, protect.
- the protective function of the coating allows the transformation in the form of a composite piece according to the invention of metals or alloys which can be altered when hot, whether they are contaminated by oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, or molten salts in the case of preheating in salt baths.
- the method is used in cases where the difficulty of processing the rough product is not only technical, but where it also comes from a problem of cost or time.
- the spinning of the piece according to the invention allows a significant reduction in section while retaining good homothety with respect to the cross section of a contained blank, and it may be advantageous to manufacture profiled parts from a piece according to the invention containing homothetic profiled blanks of large section.
- the possibilities of adjusting the compactness, the mechanical strength and the ductility of the powder matrix give great flexibility to the process of the invention.
- the factors influencing the quality of the matrix and its behavior during hot deformation are in particular: the qualities and granulometries of the powders used - for example powders of iron, copper, aluminum, coated powders -, the introduction optionally a compression lubricant and / or a solid lubricant resistant to high temperature such as graphite or molybdenum disulphide, the more or less extensive agglomeration comprising either compression alone, or sintering alone, or compression followed by sintering or oxidation, and the possible impregnation of the piece with a liquid or pasty lubricant.
- the process of the invention makes it possible to use powders of very fine qualities.
- the dimensions of the powder grains which are not necessarily all of the same size, can thus range from 2 ⁇ m to 2 mm, and their compositions can vary within the same matrix, the powder grains can also be either naked or coated.
- An important advantage of the process of the invention is the ease of extraction of the products after the transformation of the composite piece: the attack and the chemical dissolution of the matrix of agglomerated powder are much easier than the attack and the chemical dissolution of an envelope according to the prior art, whether this envelope is massive or that it comprises, for example, powder and an outer envelope.

Abstract
