Definitions
- the present invention relates to arc work torches of the type comprising a removable safety cap intended to surround the free end of the torch head and, when in place, to close an electrical circuit which is part the torch safety circuit. It applies more particularly, although not exclusively, to manual plasma cutting torches in which the removable cover has a protective function for the operator.
- the electrode of a manual plasma cutting torch is brought, during use of the torch, to a relatively high potential, of the order of 300 V relative to the mass.
- This electrode is normally made inaccessible by the presence of the nozzle of the torch, but, when a disassembly of this nozzle is necessary for the maintenance of the device, the electrode is cleared, which is dangerous for the operator in the event of involuntary actuation of the torch control trigger.
- the object of the invention is to provide a removable safety cap which is simple, reliable and quick to use and inexpensive.
- the invention relates to an arc working torch of the aforementioned type, characterized in that the cap comprises a skirt adapted to be positioned axially by a shoulder of the torch head, and a tilting stirrup articulated on one of the two elements constituted by the skirt and by the head, this stirrup comprising a metal part provided with latching means on the other of these two elements and which, when the cap is fixed on the head of the torch, cooperates with two terminals integral with said other element and belonging to said electrical circuit.
- the manual plasma cutting torch shown in FIG. 1 comprises an insulating handle 1 which carries at its end a torch head 2 and is provided at its upper part with a trigger 3 for controlling the supply of fluids and energizing .
- the head is, on the whole, of revolution around an axis X-X which one will suppose vertical for the convenience of the description.
- the head 2 essentially comprises an insulating body 4, an electrode 5, a nozzle 6 and a protective cap 7.
- the body 4 has a cylindrical shape and ends, just below the handle 1, by a horizontal end face 8.
- the nozzle 6 is a part in the general shape of a cup. Its side wall 11 is smooth and fits without play in the part 9 of the nozzle holder, until a collar 12 of the nozzle abuts against the end edge of this part 9.
- the collar 12 located at the lower end of the wall 11 and has a polygonal or star shape.
- the bottom of the nozzle is pierced with an orifice 13 of axis X-X.
- the protective cap 7 consists of a cylindrical annular lower skirt 14 and a tilting stirrup or faceplate 15 articulated on this skirt. These two parts are made of an appropriate insulating material taking into account the temperatures to which they are subjected in service.
- the skirt 14 slides with a slight play on the upper part of the nozzle holder and is provided at its lower end with a radial flange 16 directed towards the axis.
- X-X which is supported on the outside corners of the flange 12 of the nozzle.
- the faceplate 15 has a generally semi-cylindrical shape largely indented on each side by an approximately triangular indentation 17 and truncated at its lower part by an oblique face 18.
- the indentations 17 and the oblique face 18 leave behind a curved fork 19 which envelops half of the head 2 opposite the handle 1.
- the end of each branch of this fork is articulated on the skirt 14 by means of a radial lug 20, the two lugs being diametrically opposite.
- the faceplate 15 Near its upper end, the faceplate 15 has a horizontal groove 21 which extends over a little more than half a turn and which defines a housing limited on each side by a vertical shoulder 22. In this housing is received a blade semicircular metal 23 which has at each end, at two diametrically opposite points, a V-shaped catch notch 24 open downwards extended towards the end of the blade by an ascending ramp 25. In line with the notches 24, the faceplate 15 carries an arch 26 projecting upwards.
- the torch is completed by conduits (not shown) allowing it to supply the various fluids necessary for its operation, as well as by means (not shown) for supplying electric current.
- a clamp (not shown) forming part of the electrode holder assembly is actuated, by means of a removable clamping button 29 which is screwed at the end upper head 2.
- the nozzle 6 To mount the nozzle 6 in the head 2, it is inserted in the part 9 of the nozzle holder, and one threads over the skirt 14. During this operation, the faceplate 15 is tilted by about 45 °, as illustrated in phantom in Figure 1, which is allowed by the presence of the oblique pan 18.
- the arch 26 overlaps the button 29 with a slight leu, and the electrical circuit comprising the two pins 27 is closed by the blade 23, which authorizes the operation of the torch under the control of the trigger 3 when the other parts of the safety circuit are also closed.
- the electrode 5 it is not possible to access the electrode 5: on the one hand, access to the tip of the electrode assumes that the nozzle 6 is removed, which requires the prior disassembly of the skirt 14; on the other hand, the presence of the arch 26 prohibits unscrewing the button 29 and therefore accessing the upper end of the electrode.
- the latching of the blade 23 on the lugs 27 is only possible if the skirt 14 is effectively supported on the flange 12 of the nozzle, to avoid that this blade can be hung on these lugs absence of the nozzle, the blade has in its middle an appendage 30 directed downwards which, at rest, is inclined towards the body 4. This appendage is pushed elastically by the body 4 when the faceplate 15 is brought into the vertical position and tends to return the latter to its retracted position. Thus, the faceplate can remain in the vertical position only if the latching force on the pins 27 is sufficient.
- the skirt 14 bears on the collar 12 only at a certain number of points, separated by lights.
- the skirt can thus also serve to channel an annular gas flow around the nozzle; this gas can be a cooling gas or, in the case of a plasma welding torch, a gas for protecting the molten bath.
- the flanges 12 and 16 could of course have other configurations allowing such a flow of gas around the nozzle.
- the nozzle 6 could be screwed into the tubular part 9; the skirt 14 would then bear directly on the shoulder 8 of the torch body 4 and would be free from any contact with the nozzle.
- the embodiment illustrated in the drawing has the advantage of not requiring any threading of the nozzle, or of the part 9.
- the cap 7 could, with other torch configurations, serve to maintain in support a part of the torch head 2 against a shoulder, with the same advantage, possibly associated with the function of channeling a gas from the skirt 14.
- stirrup or faceplate 15 could be inverted and articulated on the lugs 27 of the head 2 and snap onto two other similar lugs provided on the skirt 14.
- the adaptation to this variant of the electrically conductive parts of the cap 7 will obviously appear to those skilled in the art.
