Ein Problem beim Gießen von Metall aus einem metallurgischem Gefäß, dessen Ausgußöffnung durch eine Stopfenstange geöffnet und geschlossen wird, besteht darin, daß der Gießlochstein des metallurgischen Gefäßes verschlackt, was ein ungenaues Abgießen zur Folge hat. Der Kolben 3 kann durch die Öffnung des Gießlochsteins 4 in Längsrichtung der Stopfenstange hin- und herbewegt werden, wobei eventuell in der Gießöffnung des Gießlochsteins 4 vorhandene Schlacke beseitigt wird. Der Kolben 3 in der Stopfenstange 2 hat im wesentlichen denselben Durchmesser wie die Öffnung im Gießlochstein 4.
