Abstract
To create the ribbon cable connections, a cable section (e.g. end section) and its insulation are overmolded in blocks, with channels running across the cable being kept free. Insulation displacement contacts are pressed into these, which contact the cable conductors and whose connecting sections protrude from the block. The block with the above e.g. Pins or knives or contact springs can now be used immediately or after locking with an upper part as a pin, knife or female connector that is connected to the ribbon cable.
Description
The invention relates to a method for producing electrical connection options in a ribbon cable which has conductors which run parallel to one another in one plane and which are connected by a plastic insulation surrounding the conductors.
The production of electrical connection options for a ribbon cable has been known for a long time. Essentially, in general, cf. see, for example, US Pat. No. 3,189,863, the ribbon cable with a section, which can in particular be an end section of the ribbon cable, placed on a plastic plate which is provided with receiving slots for insulation displacement contacts. The insulation displacement contacts themselves are arranged in a further plastic part which is pressed against the ribbon cable section which rests on the plastic plate. The insulation displacement contacts, which protrude from the further plastic part with contact limbs, penetrate with these contact limbs. the tips of the insulating material sheathing of the ribbon cable and are then taken up by the slots in the insulating material plate, with the end effect that a conductor of the ribbon cable sits in the contact slot of an insulation displacement contact. In order to ensure the correct assignment between the insulation displacement contacts and the individual conductors of the cable, the insulating material plate is provided with guides both for the ribbon cable and for the plastic part containing the insulation displacement contacts. By locking the insulating material plate with the plastic part, the which the ribbon cable is clamped between these two parts, thereby achieving a strain relief of the insulation displacement contacts.
The object of the present invention is to provide a method of the type mentioned at the outset by which the production of connections in a ribbon cable is considerably simplified.
- a) the ribbon cable is overmolded with plastic in a certain section (for example end section), the plastic insulation of the cable being connected to the plastic material of the extrusion coating,
- b) slot-like channels, which are interrupted by the cable, and which are directed transversely to the course of the cable, are kept free in the plastic block,
- c) In each channel from one side insulation displacement contacts, which thereby pierce the plastic insulation of the cable with the tips of their contact legs and in each case take up a cable conductor in their contact slot delimited by the legs.
In this way, a plastic block connected to the insulating layer of the cable is advantageously created, and when the latter is equipped with insulation displacement contacts, the cable conductors are already contacted. This saves work steps and also relieves the insulation displacement contacts from forces acting on the cable.
Further refinements of the invention provide that the insulation displacement contacts made of flat material are oversized in at least one direction with respect to the profile of the channels, that the insulation displacement contact contacts with a protruding from the plastic block connecting section and are sometimes formed with the connecting section as a contact knife, contact pin or contact spring, and that with the plastic block after the indentation of the insulation displacement contacts, the connecting sections is at least partially connected in the provided chambers receiving plastic upper part .
In this way, the insulation displacement contacts hold themselves in the plastic block, so that e.g. when the connecting sections are designed as contact blades or contact pins, a pin or blade strip which is finished without further measures is already present. Preferably, when the connection sections are designed as contact springs, the female connector is then created by connecting the plastic upper part to the plastic block, and in the production of the plastic block locking projections, which interact with the upper part, can be provided on the plastic block.

In particular, it can be seen from the figures that the connections are made in a ribbon cable 1 in that the ribbon cable 1 is first inserted into an injection mold consisting of two
