It goes without saying that the oxygen-containing gas supplied via the supply line 17 (in the present case compressed air N 2 + 0 2 ) and the water fed in via the supply line 13 must also be supplied to the device at least under this pressure. Then the device was put into operation by connecting a current source (see FIG. 5 in FIG. 1) to the current collectors 4 and switching on the circulation pump 15. With a DC voltage of 1.4 V and a regulated compressed air supply of 0.5 1 / h, a current density of 100 mA / cm 2 was achieved. The H 2 0 2 content of the aqueous solution removed was on average 3% by weight.
- the invention is not restricted to the exemplary embodiments.
- the method can also be carried out with starting materials other than pure water and oxygen or air. It is largely independent of the salt concentration of the starting solution.
- the selection of the appropriate media, whether more or less pure water, aqueous salt solution or alkaline or otherwise basic solution, is determined solely by the end product to be aimed at or its suitability for use: e.g. Tap water to brackish water up to 5 g / 1 salinity.

Abstract
Hydrogen peroxide H2O2 is generated electrochemically from water or an aqueous solution and oxygen in an electrolytic cell using a solid electrolyte (1) made from a perfluorinated polymer and gas-permeable coatings (2, 3) as electrodes in that the water on the anode side and the oxygen on fed to the cathode side and the H2O2 is discharged on the cathode side. The oxygen generated on the anode side can be used in all those cases by redirection to the cathode side or by passage through the solid electrolyte (1), where an undesired gas (e.g. chlorine) does not arise at the same time on the anode. The process works largely independently of the cation concentration (salts, bases) and does not require additional separation of the H2O2 from a liquid electrolyte.
Description
The invention relates to a method for the electrolytic production of hydrogen peroxide according to the preamble of
Hydrogen peroxide is now produced either by the older peroxodisulfuric acid or the younger anthraquinone process. The amount of electrical energy required in the first case is approx. 13000 kWh and in the second case (in the case of electrolytic hydrogen production) approx. 3000 kWh per ton of hydrogen peroxide.
also in electrolytic cells provided that oxygen is present on the cathode side and the cathode is made of carbon or some other material that promotes the electrochemical reduction of oxygen to H 2 0 2 . The reaction equation is:
The above-mentioned reaction using various liquid electrolytes (e.g. potassium hydroxide solution or potassium chloride solution) has already been proposed for the production of hydrogen peroxide (B.Kastening and W.Faul, production of hydrogen peroxide by cathodic reduction of oxygen, Chemie Ingenieur Technik 49, 1977, No. 11 , P. 911). However, this process has not been able to establish itself on a technical-industrial scale, since the H 2 0 2 only occurs in a concentration of about 1-3% in an aqueous electrolyte and must first be separated from it. This separation creates problems that are difficult to solve. In addition, the equipment and energy expenditure is considerable.
In view of the relatively high energy requirements of conventional industrial processes and the technological difficulties in using newer processes using classic liquid electrolytes, there is a pronounced need for more economical production methods for hydrogen peroxide, the world production of which reached 500,000 t in 1975.
The invention has for its object to provide a production process for hydrogen peroxide H 2 0 2 , which provides a product with high economy while avoiding expensive separation and purification processes in a simple manner, which can be used as directly as possible in many fields.

In Fig. 1 is the basic structure of a cell suitable for H20 2 production in the sectional view and its work shown schematically. 1 is the solid electrolyte based on H 3 0 + or OH ion conduction, which is preferably present as an ion exchange membrane in the form of a film. For this purpose, a perfluorinated polymer with sulfonic acids is advantageously used as the ion-exchanging groups. Since the solid electrolyte, in contrast to conventional cells of this type, does not have to assume the function of gas separation, but only has to separate the electrodes of opposite polarity, that is to say it has to be held at a certain minimum distance to avoid short-circuits and also serves as an ion conductor, this film can be very thin . It may also be porous, ie gas permeable. For example, a product from Du Pont known under the trade name "Nafion" can be used as a suitable material. On the

It must therefore be ensured that there is 1 mol of oxygen on the cathode for each substance conversion. 1/2 0 2 must therefore also be supplied to the outside of the cell, which is symbolically indicated in FIG. 1 by an arrow pointing obliquely downward and drawn on the cathode side. The other half amount of oxygen corresponding to 1/2 0 2 comes from the electrolysis of the anode (arrow pointing vertically upwards) and must also be brought to the cathode side in some way.
- - According to Fig. 2, one half of the
oxygen 1/2 0 2 is passed directly from the outside to the cathode side. The other half of the amount of oxygen, ie thenascent oxygen 1/2 0 formed on the anode, is also passed around thesolid electrolyte 1 to the cathode side. Here, the total comparable fo gbare oxygen 1/2 0 2 + 1/2 0 2 is reduced to H 2 0. 2 - - According to Fig. 3, a mixture of
H 2 0 and 1/2 0 2 is supplied to the anode side of the cell. Thenascent oxygen 1/2 O 2 is also created on this side. Both portions of the latter,ie 1/2 0 2 + 1/2 0 2, migrate through the porous, gas-permeablesolid electrolyte 1 by holding the anode side here under a slight excess pressure relative to the cathode side. The result is again 1 mol H 2 0 2 by reducing the oxygen on the cathode side.
It should be specifically pointed out that in both cases pure H 2 0 2 in aqueous solution is formed, free of any other chemicals. There is no need to separate any electrolysis components, as is the case when using liquid electrolytes. The resulting product can be used directly in many areas of household, trade and industry.
Dabei entsteht an
- 4, a mixture of water and sodium hydroxide (example: 2 molar solution of NaOH corresponding to H 2 O + 2NaOH) is fed to the anode side of the cell instead of pure water. This produces 1/2 0 2 at the anode, which is passed around the
solid electrolyte 1 to the cathode side. The positive ions 2Na + migrate through thesolid electrolyte 1, likewise the H20. On the cathode side, NaOH is immediately formed again by reaction of the Na + with H 2 0. For the production of H 2 0 2 must be additionally supplied to thecathode side 1/2 0 2 from the outside. In practice, aqueous solutions of at most 1 mol NaOH will be used.
Since on the anode and on the cathode side essentially only oxygen or oxygen-containing gases occur, which do not contain any chemically active constituents (eg air) as further components, this method can of course also be carried out by means of a gas-permeablesolid electrolyte 1 analogous to FIG. 3 will. - 5, a mixture of water and sodium chloride (example: 1-molar solution of NaCl corresponding to 2H 2 0 + 2NaCl) is fed to the anode side of the cell instead of pure water. This produces at the anode C1 2 and possibly (0 2 ), which must be removed from the anode compartment. In this case, the
solid electrolyte 1 must not be gas-permeable and the cathode side must be separated from the anode side by theadditional partition 6. In this case, the full amount of oxygen 0 2 necessary for the formation of H 2 0 2 and 2NaOH must be supplied from the outside on the cathode side. Practically one will use aqueous solutions of at most 1 mol NaCl.
Of course, other combinations of the reactions of H 2 0 and an alkali metal compound are also conceivable than is shown in FIGS. 4 and 5. The ratios depend only on the concentrations of H 2 0 2 desired on the removal side (cathode side) and, for example, NaOH in H 2 0.
On the basis of the functional diagrams, it should be emphasized once again that the new process does not bind to any liquid electrolytes in any way and that it can work completely free of salt concentrations or additional base or acid components. In the previous variants according to FIGS. 4 and 5, the Na compound does not primarily serve as an electrolyte, although the Na + ions contribute to the conductivity. The example according to FIG. 5 basically represents a combination of an electrolytic cell for generating H 2 0 2 with a chlorine / alkali cell.
The electrolytic cell used to carry out the method had, as
Der H202-Gehalt der entnommenen wässerigen Lösung betrug durchschnittlich 3 Gew.-%.A cell designed according to Example I was installed in a gas-
The invention is not restricted to the exemplary embodiments. In particular, the method can also be carried out with starting materials other than pure water and oxygen or air. It is largely independent of the salt concentration of the starting solution. The selection of the appropriate media, whether more or less pure water, aqueous salt solution or alkaline or otherwise basic solution, is determined solely by the end product to be aimed at or its suitability for use: e.g. Tap water to brackish water up to 5 g / 1 salinity.
