Abstract

The present invention relates to a safety binding of a boot on a ski comprising two lateral clamps (4) movably mounted under the action of an elastic member (28) parallel to the plane of the ski (3) between a closed position in which the clamps coact with the sole of the boot and an open position. Each clamp (4) is connected to one end of a longitudinally slidable strip (45) by means of articulatedly interconnected rods. The other end of the strip coacts with a crank (29-30) subjected to the action of the resilient member, whereby this crank has two stable positions corresponding to the respective open and closed positions of the clamps.

Description

The present invention relates to a safety binding of a boot on a ski with side jaws, that is to say in which two side jaws are mounted movable parallel to the plane of the ski, under the effect of an elastic member, between a closed position for which it cooperates with the sole of the shoe and an open position for which the latter is completely released.

The principle of lateral jaw fasteners has been known for several years, in particular by patents FR-A 1411638 and 2021 237, but until now have not been the subject of sufficiently satisfactory and safe embodiments to be successfully marketed.

Also known, in particular from patent FR-A 2332773, safety fasteners of the aforementioned type, in which each jaw is carried by an arm whose free end is articulated on an axial actuating slide, a connecting rod being furthermore articulated on one side on a jaw and on the other on the ski. This arrangement has the drawback of limiting the possibilities of lateral release of the boot, the opening of the lateral jaws being relatively small compared to the necessary axial travel of the actuating slide.

In addition, patent FR-A 2,445,730 discloses a safety attachment of the aforementioned type, which comprises, between the actuating spring and the connecting member, a linkage constituted by two rods articulated with one another and serving to ensure the passage from the open position to the closed service position of the jaws, and vice versa. However, this solution is disadvantageous in the sense that the lengthening of the linkage to obtain the closed service position is effected against the action of the actuating spring, which is therefore compressed in the service position.

Consequently, the object of this invention is to improve the operating reliability of safety bindings of the aforementioned type, and thereby increase the safety of skiers, by providing a binding in which, on the one hand, a maximum opening of the jaws can be obtained with a minimal axial displacement of the connecting element, and on the other hand a tilting member makes it possible to obtain almost instantaneously the passage from one position to the other, this with an actuating spring which does not is in its compressed state only in the open position out of service.

The above object is achieved with the safety binding according to the invention, which is characterized in that each jaw is carried by an arm whose free end is pivotally mounted on the ski, and is connected to the front end d '' a rod sliding longitudinally by means of two rods hinged to each other, by the fact that the other end of the rod cooperates with a rocker subjected to the action of the elastic member, so that this rocker has two stable positions corresponding to the respectively open and closed positions of the jaws and by the fact that this rocker comprises a first element pivoting on a fixed transverse axis and having two other movable transverse axes arranged in a triangle with said fixed axis, one of these two movable axes being engaged with the rear end of the rod and the other movable axis being articulated with a second element cooperating with the elastic member.

According to a first embodiment of the invention, the lever consists of a bent link, one end of which cooperates with the rod and the other end is connected by a straight link articulated to a piston subjected to the action of the elastic member. , this element being pivoted by its bent portion on an actuating lever.

According to a second embodiment of the invention, the rocker is constituted by an actuating lever pivoting on a fixed transverse axis cooperating with a housing containing the elastic member, which has a first part pivoting on another fixed transverse axis and a second part articulated on the actuating lever, the two parts forming the housing sliding one inside the other longitudinally.

The safety binding according to the invention may also include an automatic closing device acting on the rocker of said binding.

L'angle minimum a peut être de l'ordre d'environ 30°, alors que l'angle maximum peut être de l'ordre d'environ 60°.Referring firstly to Figures 1 to 4, the safety binding comprises two base plates 1, 2 fixed on a ski 3 and between which are mounted two side jaws 4, 4 'movable laterally under the action of a elastic member contained in a housing 5 fixed on the ski, the elastic member being able to be actuated by a lever 6. Each jaw 4, 4 comprises in the embodiment illustrated by way of example a portion 7, 7 ′ directed from bottom to top and from outside to inside and making an increasing acute angle from front to back with the plane of the ski so as to give this portion a slightly twisted appearance. The minimum angle a may be on the order of approximately 30 °, while the maximum angle may be on the order of approximately 60 °.

According to a variant shown in phantom in Figure 1, each jaw 4 may have a recessed middle portion 7a leaving only the two outer portions 7b, 7c forming kinds of claws.

The ski boot 8 intended to cooperate with the jaws described above comprises a sole 9, the middle part 10 of which has lateral flanges 11, 11 ′ forming on each side of the sole a ramp forming with the plane of the latter an increasing acute angle from front to back and giving it a shape corresponding to that of the space between the jaws 4, 4 'in the closed position. Thus, in the service position illustrated in FIG. 1, the jaws 4, 4 ′ exactly match the lateral ramps 11, 11 of the middle part 10 of the sole 9 of the shoe 8.

In addition, to ensure easy lateral release of the shoe 8 when the jaws are in the open position, either following a fall, or voluntarily, the sole 9 still has two transverse grooves 12, 13 respectively delimiting forward and towards the rear the middle part 10. The rear end of this middle part 10 also has a recess 14, located on the longitudinal axis of the sole and which is intended to cooperate, in the service position, with a cone centering 15 fixed on the upper plate 2 of the binding, back with respect to the lateral jaws 4, 4 'and on the median longitudinal axis of the ski.

A first embodiment of the device for actuating the lateral jaws 4, 4 ′ will now be described with reference to FIGS. 5 to 8. The jaws 4, 4 ′, the shape of which in plan here is conical, widening towards the rear, comprises in addition to the hooking portions 7, 7 'cooperating in the service position with the sole of the shoe, horizontal portions 16, 16' constituting the extensions of two arms 17, 17 '. These arms 17, 17 'are pivotally mounted on the plate 1 of the attachment on vertical axes 18, 18', so that the jaws 4, 4 'move by pivoting the arms 17, 17' parallel to the. surface of the ski between an open position (FIGS. 5 and 6) and a closed position (FIGS. 7A, 7B and 8), the attachment portions 7, 7 ′ of the jaws 4, 4 ′ enclosing the edges of the middle portion of the sole of the shoe.

As shown in FIGS. 5 and 7A, a rod 19 is slidably mounted longitudinally between the two arms 17, 17 ′ carrying the jaws 4, 4 ′, the sliding movement being centered thanks to a stud 20 secured to the plate 1 cooperating with a longitudinal slot made in this rod 19. The front end of this rod 19 is connected to the lateral jaws 4, 4 ', more particularly to their horizontal portions 16, 16', by means of two pairs of rods 22, 23; 22 ', 23'. Each pair comprises a first link 22,22 ', one end of which is articulated on the end of the rod 19, the other end of this link 22, 22' being itself articulated on a second link 23, 23 ', which is articulated on the horizontal portion 16, 16 'of the jaw 4, 4'. The different joints are produced by vertical pivot axes 24, 24 'respectively; 25, 25 '; 26, 26 '. Finally, the outer edge of each second link 23, 23 'is in contact with a roller 27, 27' fixed on the plate 1 and provided with a rotating ring so as to guide and facilitate the transition from one position to the 'other.

As shown in FIGS. 6, 7B and 8, the rod 19 is connected by its rear end to an elastic member constituted here by a spring 28 mounted fixed relative to the ski, longitudinally behind said rod 19. This connection is ensured by a rocker 29 constituted in this first embodiment by a bent piece, one of the ends of which cooperates with the rod 19 and the other end is connected by a link 30 to a piston 31 secured to the spring 28. More particularly, and as illustrated on FIG. 7B, a transverse axis 32, fixed between the corresponding ends of two rockers 29, 29 'arranged laterally parallel to one another, cooperates with the groove formed between two transverse projections 33, 33' which is provided with the rear end of the rod 19. Similarly, each of the two rockers 29, 29 'is connected to the piston 31 by a link 30, 30', a transverse axis 34 being fixed to the articulation between the rockers 29, 29 'and the biel lettes 30, 30 'and a transverse axis 35, the ends of which act as an articulation for the links 30, 30' cooperates with said piston 31. A guide rod 36 is moreover fixed longitudinally by one of its ends to piston 31, passes through the spring 28 and is housed at its other end freely in an adjustment nut 37, intended to adjust the elastic force of the spring 28 by face or unscrewing it in the wall of the housing 5. Finally, the transverse axis 38 connecting the bent portions of the two parallel rockers 29, 29 ′ is pivoted in the side walls of the housing 5.

The linkage mechanism between the rod 19 and the elastic member 28 makes it possible, thanks to the presence of the latches 29, 29 ′, to define two stable positions corresponding to the respectively open and closed positions (FIGS. 6 and 8) of the lateral jaws 4, 4 ′ .

As illustrated in FIG. 1, the manipulation lever 6 is pivotally mounted around the ends of the axis 38 outside the housing 5, and is pierced on each side with a slightly arched opening 40 in which the ends move of the transverse axis 34 serving as an articulation between the two rockers 29, 29 'and the two links 30, 30'.

The operation of the safety fastener as it has just been described with reference to Figures 1 to 8 is as follows.

The binding of the boot 8 on the ski 3 is obtained by placing the latter between the lateral jaws 4, 4 ′ open, so that the boot is centered thanks to the centering cone 15 cooperating with the corresponding withdrawal 14 made in the 'rear of the middle part 10 of the sole 9. Then it is enough to pull on the tension lever 6 to lift it and thus cause the reversal of the position of the rockers 29, 29' which causes the rearward movement of the rod 19 (see FIG. 8) and thereby the closing of the jaws 4,4 ' on the middle part 10 of the sole 9 of the shoe 8.

According to a variant illustrated in phantom in Figures 2 and 3, the upper rim of the portion 7 of each jaw 4 may have two open notches 50, of approximately square or rectangular shape, the internal side walls of which are flared, with slopes of about 45 °, from the outside to the inside. These notches 50 are intended to cooperate in the service position with tabs 51 of shape corresponding to said notches. With this variant, the torsional force in the event of a fall is better transmitted to the jaws, and moreover the centering of the shoe is improved.

The design of the linkage rod 19 - elastic member 28 by means of a rocker system allowing a displacement of the support axis of the link connected to said elastic member constitutes a lever arm modifying gradually, thus gradually decreasing the moment of force necessary to pass from the open position to the closed position and vice versa. The opening, respectively closing, of the jaws is therefore carried out automatically immediately after passing the balance point of the rocker (reversal point). It can be seen that the spring 28 is less compressed in the operating position (FIG. 8) than in the open position (FIG. 6), and therefore less stressed mechanically, which tends to give it greater longevity.

In addition, the rod system 22, 22 ' ; 23, 23 ' to ensure the connection between the front end of the rod 19 and the jaws 4, 4' allows a maximum opening thereof for a very reduced longitudinal displacement of the rod 19 and thereby the spring 28. This is important to allow complete release of the boot when the jaws are in the open position, either by voluntary manipulation of the lever 6 obtained by lowering it, for example by pressing the tip of the ski pole into the notch 41 provided for this effect at the upper end of said lever 6 and pushing it down, either because of a fall having led to the operation of the security system. In fact, the length of the middle part 10 of the sole 9 being less than the minimum distance between the jaws 4, 4 ′ in the open position, the boot 8 can rotate 90 ° on each side of the ski above these jaws 4, 4 ′ by virtue of the presence of the transverse grooves 12, 13 delimiting forwards and backwards this middle part 10, which allows the shoe to be released in any position.

Thus, the use of articulated links makes it possible to obtain a longer service life of the device, the friction being significantly reduced compared to known systems.

With this first embodiment of the binding according to the invention, it is also possible to provide an automatic fitting system, avoiding the user to manipulate the lever. Unlike known systems, which are based on the retention of the elastic member, the automatic closing member illustrated in FIGS. 9 and 10 is intended to slightly push the rod 19 to reverse the tension position thanks to the presence of the rocking. This automatic closing member can be formed for example of a lever 42 articulated on a transverse axis 43 fixed relative to the ski and having a heel 44 cooperating in the open position of the jaws with the front transverse projection 33 of the rod 19 (see figure 9). To automatically engage the binding, it suffices to lower the lever 42 by pressing the heel of the shoe 8 on its free front end. This movement causes the heel 44 to push against the transverse projection 33 and thereby the displacement in the rear of the rod 19 (see FIG. 9), which has the effect of tilting the device to the closed service position with the rod 19 in its pulled back position (see Figure 10).

The binding illustrated in FIGS. 11 and 12 consists of a variant of the embodiment of the jaw actuation device described above with reference to FIGS. 5 to 8.

In this variant, the sliding rod 45 is connected to the arms 46, 46 ′ carrying the jaws 4, 4 ′ by means of two pairs of rods, more particularly to the anterior portions 47, 47 ′ of these arms, the lateral edges of which form the jaws 7b, 7c. Each pair of links comprises a straight link 48, 48 'articulated at the front end of the rod 45 and a link 49, 49' bent at a right angle. This link 49, 49 'is pivoted at its portion bent around a stud 50a, 50a ' secured to the base plate 1. It is moreover articulated by one of its ends to the anterior end of the straight link 48, 48' on the one hand, and by its other end to a stud 50b, 50b 'integral with the front portion 47, 47' of the jaws 4, 4 'on the other hand, this stud 50b, 50b' cooperating more particularly with an opening 51 elongated longitudinally formed at the end of said bent rod 49, 49 ', so as to allow the lateral opening of the jaws 4, 4 ' under the effect of a longitudinal translational movement towards the front of the rod 45.

With this variant, the friction zones are further reduced, which improves the quality of operation of the mechanism and its lifespan. For the rest, the operation of the device is the same as that described above, the corresponding members bearing the same reference numbers as in the embodiment of FIGS. 5 to 8.

In addition, on this variant is shown an adjustable stop 52 which can be provided in front of the jaws 4, 4 'of the attachment. This adjustable stop comprises a stud 53 secured to the front end of a blade 54 slidably mounted longitudinally in an axial opening 55 provided below the base plate 2 'of the binding. This blade 54 is provided with notches 56 intended to cooperate with a locking member 57 actuable from the outside in order to fix the longitudinal position of the adjustable stop. Thus, this stop has on the one hand the advantage of making it easier for the skier to put on the binding by determining the front position against which the front end of the sole of the shoe must be placed and, on the other hand, allows the aerodynamic outer shape given to the pad 53 to deflect the snow on the sides and avoid the accumulation of it against the tip of the shoe.

Contrairement à la réalisation des figures 9 et 10 nécessitant la présence d'un organe de fermeture particulier supplémentaire, on utilise dans la variante des figures 13 et 14 le mouvement de remise en position horizontale du dispositif de freinage du ski («stopper»).Another variant illustrated in FIGS. 13 and 14 differs from the previous one in that it further comprises an automatic closing device (“step in”) of the jaws triggered by the placing in the service position of the ski boot ( not shown) on the mounting. Contrary to the embodiment of FIGS. 9 and 10 requiring the presence of an additional particular closing member, in the variant of FIGS. 13 and 14, the movement of resetting the horizontal braking device of the ski ("stop") is used.

Thus, in the out-of-service position of the binding (not shown), that is to say when the jaws 4, 4 are open and the rod 45 in the advanced position, the stop is in its active position with the anterior portion 59 thereof in the raised position, as shown in phantom in Figure 13, and the branches projecting under the ski. When the skier raises his skis, he must therefore with his shoe come to press on this front portion 59 of the stopper to return it to its inactive horizontal position illustrated, which causes a rotation of the transverse cylinders 57, 57 'in the opposite direction to that of the hands of a watch, so that the pins 58, 58 'come into contact with transverse fins 60, 60' which are provided with the rod 45 'and push the latter rearward to cause the tilting of the rocker 29-30 and thus the closing of the jaws 4,4 '.

In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 15 and 16, the tilting device constituted by rods in the embodiments already described is replaced by another construction in which the actuating lever 61 plays the role of the bent rod and the tilting system is ensured by the fact that the housing 62 containing the spring 61 of the binding is pivotally mounted. More particularly, the pivoting spring-housing 62 consists of two parts 63, 64, the front part 63 being able to move by sliding on the rear part 64, so as to act as a piston to compress the spring 28, the force of this- ci being adjustable by means of an adjustment screw 65 accessible from the rear of the device.

The rear part 64 of the piston housing 62 is pivotally mounted on its transverse axes 66, 66 ′ in two side walls 67, 67 ′ fixed vertically on the upper surface of the ski 3. As for the rear part 63 of this housing 62, it is pivotally mounted on its axes 68, 68 'transverse in the side walls of the lever 61, the latter being pivotally mounted on its axes 69, 69' in the side walls 67, 67 ' fixed to the ski 3.

In Figures 15 and 16 is shown the position of the device corresponding to the position of service with closed jaws. When the lever 61 is deliberately pushed down, or in the event of the jaws opening caused by a fall for example, then the spring housing 62 moves simultaneously with the lever 61 downwards by pivoting on the axes 66, 66 ' , and the axes 68, 68 'connecting the lever 61 to the housing 62 describe an arc of a circle, this causing the compression of the spring 28 and the reversal of the rocker; thus the transverse rod 32 which is provided with the lower end of the lever 61 tends to push the rod 45 for actuating the jaws 4, 4 'forwards while cooperating with the formation 33 which the rod 45 has at its rear end.

Finally, the embodiment shown diagrammatically in FIGS. 17 and 18 differs from the previous ones by the fact that the elastic member is arranged in front of the lateral jaws. As illustrated, the ski boot 9 is fixed to the ski surface by the side jaws 4, 4 ', these being subjected to the action of a spring (not shown) disposed in a housing 105 fixed in front of the tip of the boot 8. As before, the jaws 104, 104 'are carried by arms 146, 146' pivotally mounted on the ski (see FIGS. 11 and 12), and are connected to a rod 145 by means of rod 148, 148 '; 149, 149 ′, the rod 145 sliding longitudinally and cooperating at its front end with the elastic member (not shown) by means of a rocking device which may be similar to that described with reference to FIGS. 11 and 12, the pivot axis 138 of the lever 106 being of course moved so that it is in the low position (see FIG. 18) when the binding is closed (service position).

In addition to the advantages already mentioned, namely simplicity of construction and operation, guaranteed release of the boot in the event of a fall, longer service life due to the reduction in friction, the fastening device according to the invention furthermore presents the advantage of being able to be easily combined with an automatic fitting system for this binding. Indeed, since it suffices to move from the open position of the jaws to their closed position to act on the rocker, it is therefore necessary to provide a member acting on this rocker, or on the rod which is connected thereto, which can be for example actuated by the establishment of the ski boot. Thus, this member can be combined with a braking device, or “stop”, with which the ski is equipped, for example as illustrated in FIGS. 11 and 12, or in any other way not specifically described here.
