Dann erfolgt eine langsame Abkühlung im Sand. Danach wird der Restballen um das Gussstück mit Hilfe weiterer Lanzenrohre entfernt, wenn das Gussstück eine Temperatur unterhalb der kritischen Abkühltemperatur erreicht. Die in den Sandballen eindringenden Lanzen weisen bezüglich des Gussstückes eine Ausrichtwirkung auf, so dass auch Gussstücke, die ihre Lage im Kühlbahnhof durch abbröckelnden Sand in Höhe und Seitenlage verändert haben, noch gefasst werden können.
