- the products in particular steel slabs, which are heated before rolling in ovens, are supported on sleepers (or chenets) cooled by water or steam circulation, by means of supports called studs or buttons.
- These studs are, in general, cylindrical in shape and placed on the chenet tubes at regular intervals and maintained by welding on the tube. They are coated, over part of their height by the insulating refractory lining which surrounds the chenet.

- the stud is advantageously made of refractory steel, for example cobalt steel. It can be in one piece. But it can also include a lower element whose height is substantially equal to that of the envelope and whose outer diameter is substantially equal to the inner diameter of the envelope, this element being fitted into said envelope so that their upper faces are at the same level, and an upper element which is fixed on the lower element and whose diameter is substantially equal to that of the envelope.
- the pad according to the invention comprises a lower element 1 and an upper element 2; the latter has a larger diameter than that of the element 1, which determines at the periphery of the stud a recess in which is housed an insulating envelope 3, for example of fibrous structure.

- the element 1 has at its base an axial recess 1b, which reduces the section offered to the heat flow from the upper element of the stud. Its lower face 1c is rounded to the profile of a chenet. It is intended to be welded to the chenet by this rounded face 1c.
