Skids for metal-heating furnaces of the splitflame type comprise rails 2 supported so as to allow for relative thermal expansion and contraction on pipes 1 cooled by water, steam or air, said pipes being covered by a layer of asbestos 3, with an outer refractory casing in two parts 4 and 5. In a modification, Fig. 2, the rail 2 is made T-shaped, the lower flaring section being held between fillets 10, 11 welded to the pipe 1. Other modifications, Figs. 3-6 (not shown), depict varieties of round-headed and T-shaped rails. Relative expansion may be allowed for by dividing the rails into short, spaced lengths, Fig. 7, formed with pins 13 engaging holes 14 and slots 15 in a web 16 welded to the pipe, the bottom of the rail sections being undulated to reduce contacts between them and the web. Expansion may also be allowed for slotting the underside of the rail sections, Fig. 9 (not shown), or giving them slightly spaced tongue and groove joints, Fig. 10 (not shown). The rail 2 may be divided into parallel, staggered sections 27-30, Fig. 14, having expansion joints 31-33, and the individual sections may have lower recesses enclosing a spring loop, the ends of which engage recesses in the refractory casing, Figs. 11-13 (not shown).
