Definitions
- the present invention relates to a switching amplifier for analog LF signals, with an A / D converter which converts the analog LF signal into at least two pulse trains, and with at least two amplifier stages, each of which contains a transformer, the primary winding of which has a voltage source and whose secondary winding is connected to a diode cascade, and at least one switching element controlled by the pulse train for the current to be transmitted from the voltage source to the diode cascade, and to a low-pass filter connected to the diode cascade.
- Switching amplifiers of the type described have a high efficiency, which is why they are used with particular advantage for amplifiers with high output power.
- a switching amplifier is described in DE-OS 29 35 445, which is provided as a modulation amplifier for a radio transmitter.
- this switching amplifier contains a plurality of amplifier stages arranged next to one another, each of which has two transformers, the primary windings of which can be connected to a DC voltage source via associated switching elements and the secondary windings of which are connected to a diode cascade.
- the analog LF input signal to be amplified is converted in a known manner into two pulse trains, the permanently modulated pulses of which are phase-shifted by 180 °.
- the impulses of every Im pulse trains control the switching element for one of the transformers in each amplifier stage.
- the switching elements and transformers of each amplifier stage are switched on or excited once during each period of the A / D converter, and the switch-on or excitation time can be very short.
- the known switching amplifier requires two transformers which can be switched on alternately in each amplifier stage for the two modes of operation described.
- the present invention is therefore based on the object of providing a switching amplifier whose amplifier stages require only one transformer and only one switching element for 100% modulation and whose transformer can also be excited during several successive periods of the A / D converter.
- this object is achieved with a switching amplifier of the type mentioned, in which the primary winding of the transformer (in each amplifier stage) is connected to an AC voltage source and the amplifier stage contains a rectifier circuit connected to the secondary winding of the transformer and the at least one switching element between an output thereof Rectifier circuit and the diode cascade is connected.
- the new switching amplifier makes it possible to reduce the number of transformers required for a given output power by half and the number of assigned switching elements to a quarter, thereby reducing both the material expenditure and the switching losses. Furthermore, a smaller low-pass filter can be used for the new switching amplifier, because no more two 180 ° phase-shifted pulses are generated during each conversion period or the pulses no longer have to be broken down into two partial pulses. Finally, the new switching amplifier also enables a better quality of the LF output signal, because the reduced number of switching processes also results in a reduction in the distortion factor and a reduction in noise.
- the input terminal 10 for the analog LF input signal to be amplified is connected to the input of an A / D converter 11.
- a memory 12 is connected downstream of the A / D converter, to which a controllable memory circuit 13, which has a plurality of outputs, is assigned.
- a clock generator 14 is also provided, which supplies the clock pulses for converting the analog input signal into digital signals and for outputting the control signals.
- the switching amplifier further contains a transformer 20, the primary winding 21 of which is connected to an AC voltage source 22.
- the transformer has a plurality of secondary windings, of which only three secondary windings 23, 24, 25 are shown for the sake of simplicity.
- Each secondary winding is connected to a rectifier circuit which consists of a one-way rectifier 27, 28 and 29, a series choke 31, 32 and 33 and a smoothing capacitor 35, 36 and 37, respectively.
- One output of the rectifier circuit is connected to a controllable switching element 39, 40 or 41.
- Each secondary winding forms with the associated rectifier circuit and the switching element an amplifier stage 43, 44 and 45, the outputs of which are connected to a diode cascade 47.
- the diode cascade contains a diode 48, 49, 50 between the connections of each amplifier stage.
- the end of the diode cask kade is connected to the output terminal 53 of the amplifier via a low-pass filter 52.
- the memory circuit 13 contains a separate output for each of the amplifier stages, which is connected to the switching element of the associated amplifier stage by means of a signal line 55, 56 or 57.
- the primary winding 21 of the transformer 20 is connected to the AC voltage source 22. Then an alternating voltage is induced in each secondary winding 23, 24, 25, which is rectified by the associated rectifier 27, 28 or 29 and charges the capacitor 35, 36 or 37 to the corresponding direct voltage.
- the analog signal passed from the input terminal to the A / D converter 11 is sampled at predetermined time intervals and a digital signal corresponding to the instantaneous value of the amplitude is generated, which is stored in the memory 12.
- the maximum convertible voltage value of the amplitude is divided into voltage ranges, the number of which is equal to the number of amplifier stages.
- the digital output signal of the converter is then a number which is equal to the number of voltage ranges which correspond to the instantaneous value of the amplitude of the analog signal.
- This digital signal sets in memory 12 an equal number of memory locations.
- the latch circuit 13 periodically reads the memory stop and generates a switch-on signal for each set memory location, which is given to one of the signal lines 55, 56, 57 and passed to the corresponding switching element 39, 40 or 41.
- At least one amplifier stage can be subdivided into further sub-stages, the output voltages of which are binary-weighted and which are driven by a corresponding, binary-coded signal from the memory circuit 13. In this way, the voltage levels occurring on the diode cascade and thus the ripple of the output signal due to the amplifier can be reduced.
- the transformer can simply be connected to a technical AC voltage source can for example with 220 V / 50 Hz. But it is also possible to use a three-phase transformer for 380 V / 50 Hz. In the latter case, the primary and the secondary windings shown in FIG. 1 consist of three winding parts, and the rectifier device is accordingly designed as a three-phase rectifier.
- the A / D converter 11 can be followed by an arithmetic unit which determines the difference between the instantaneous value of the amplitude of the analog input signal and the closest digital value formed from the voltage ranges and via the Withdrawal circuit 13 generates an additional, time-delayed control signal, the time delay of the determined difference being inversely proportional. It is particularly advantageous if only those switch-on or switch-off signals that correspond to the change in the analog input signal that has occurred in the meantime have been generated in the case of successive readout cycles. This enables the total number of switching operations and the associated switching losses to be significantly reduced. Such operating modes are described in the CH patent application mentioned at the outset, which is why their detailed discussion is dispensed with.
- each of the further “floating" amplifier stages is at a higher voltage, the value of which is variable and depends on the number of amplifier stages switched on and the order number of the individual amplifier stages along the diode cascade.
- the switching signals generated by the latch circuit have a constant voltage against the ground line, which is why the switching signals cannot be passed directly to the switching elements.
- 2 shows an amplifier stage 60 and an arrangement designed as a photocoupler 61 for galvanically separating the signal line from the switching element.
- the amplifier stage contains .. in accordance with the embodiments according to FIG.
- a secondary winding 63 a rectifier 64, ei ne choke 65, a smoothing capacitor 66 and a switch 67.
- the switch is a field effect transistor, the gate of which is connected to the photodiode 70 of the photocoupler.
- the light-emitting diode 71 of the photocoupler is connected to a signal line 72.
- a fiber light guide 73 can be used to transmit the light.
- an amplifier can be connected between the photodiode and the switch if the output signal of the photodiode does not allow direct control of the switch.
- the single-phase rectifier circuit shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 is simply designed as a one-way rectification. It goes without saying that a midpoint or double path circuit or a double path estimation circuit can also be used to reduce the ripple of the DC voltage.
- a star or double-star rectifier circuit can also be used instead of the three-phase bridge rectifier also mentioned.
- FIG. 3 shows a further embodiment of an amplifier stage 80, the rectifier device of which is designed as a two-way rectifier for voltage doubling.
- the rectifier device of which is designed as a two-way rectifier for voltage doubling.
- one end of the secondary winding 81 is connected via two diodes 82, 83 connected in anti-parallel and associated chokes 84 and 85 with one of the two capacitors 87 and 88 and the other end of the secondary winding directly connected to the connection point 89 of the other terminals of the capacitors.
- One connection of each capacitor is further connected via a switching element 91 or 92, and the connection point 89 of the other two capacitor connections is led directly to the diode cascade 93, which has a diode 94, 95 between the individual connections.
- the single-phase rectifier device with two-way rectification shown can also be designed as a center circuit and for a three-phase transformer as a star or double star rectifier circuit.

Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a switching amplifier for analog LF signals, with an A / D converter which converts the analog LF signal into at least two pulse trains, and with at least two amplifier stages, each of which contains a transformer, the primary winding of which has a voltage source and whose secondary winding is connected to a diode cascade, and at least one switching element controlled by the pulse train for the current to be transmitted from the voltage source to the diode cascade, and to a low-pass filter connected to the diode cascade.
Switching amplifiers of the type described have a high efficiency, which is why they are used with particular advantage for amplifiers with high output power. For example, a switching amplifier is described in DE-OS 29 35 445, which is provided as a modulation amplifier for a radio transmitter. For this purpose, this switching amplifier contains a plurality of amplifier stages arranged next to one another, each of which has two transformers, the primary windings of which can be connected to a DC voltage source via associated switching elements and the secondary windings of which are connected to a diode cascade. The analog LF input signal to be amplified is converted in a known manner into two pulse trains, the permanently modulated pulses of which are phase-shifted by 180 °. The impulses of every Im pulse trains control the switching element for one of the transformers in each amplifier stage. As a result of the alternating excitation of the two transformers of each amplifier stage, the saturation of these transformers can be avoided and 100% control of the amplifier stages can be achieved. It is understood that in this mode of operation, the switching elements and transformers of each amplifier stage are switched on or excited once during each period of the A / D converter, and the switch-on or excitation time can be very short.
In order to reduce the switching losses, another operating method for switching amplifiers has therefore already been proposed (CH patent application 992 / 81-2). In this method, the analog LF input signal is also sampled periodically in an A / D converter, and a number of pulses of the same duration corresponding to the instantaneous value of the amplitude of the analog signal are generated. An amplifier stage is assigned to each pulse, and each pulse is broken down into two sub-pulses which alternately control the switching elements interacting with the two transformers of this amplifier stage. The duration of each pulse or partial pulse is chosen so that the transformer is energized for a maximum duration without running into saturation. With this operating method, only as many switching elements and transformers are switched on or excited during each period of the A / D converter as correspond to the instantaneous value of the analog signal, which enables a significant reduction in switching losses.
The known switching amplifier requires two transformers which can be switched on alternately in each amplifier stage for the two modes of operation described. The greater the required output power, the greater the material requirements and the switching losses. The present invention is therefore based on the object of providing a switching amplifier whose amplifier stages require only one transformer and only one switching element for 100% modulation and whose transformer can also be excited during several successive periods of the A / D converter.
According to the invention this object is achieved with a switching amplifier of the type mentioned, in which the primary winding of the transformer (in each amplifier stage) is connected to an AC voltage source and the amplifier stage contains a rectifier circuit connected to the secondary winding of the transformer and the at least one switching element between an output thereof Rectifier circuit and the diode cascade is connected.
The new switching amplifier makes it possible to reduce the number of transformers required for a given output power by half and the number of assigned switching elements to a quarter, thereby reducing both the material expenditure and the switching losses.
- Fig. 1 shows the simplified block diagram of an embodiment of the new switching amplifier and
- 2 and 3 the circuit diagram of a first and a second embodiment of the amplifier stage for the new switching amplifier.
In the embodiment of a switching amplifier shown in a highly simplified block diagram in FIG. 1, the
The switching amplifier further contains a
The
To operate the amplifier described, the
For the further description it is assumed that all
The analog signal passed from the input terminal to the A /
In this way, a number of switching elements corresponding to the instantaneous value of the amplitude of the analog signal is switched on and the direct voltages applied to the assigned capacitors are connected in series along the diode cascade. This creates a voltage for the period between two switching cycles across the diode cascade, which is proportional to the sum of the voltage ranges of the analog input signal determined in the A / D converter. The voltage jumps that occur across the diode cascade when switching elements on and off are compensated for by the low-
In order to distribute the load of the individual amplifier stages evenly, it is advantageous to choose the same output voltage for most amplifier stages.
In addition, at least one amplifier stage can be subdivided into further sub-stages, the output voltages of which are binary-weighted and which are driven by a corresponding, binary-coded signal from the
It goes without saying that the transformer can simply be connected to a technical AC voltage source can for example with 220 V / 50 Hz. But it is also possible to use a three-phase transformer for 380 V / 50 Hz. In the latter case, the primary and the secondary windings shown in FIG. 1 consist of three winding parts, and the rectifier device is accordingly designed as a three-phase rectifier.
It goes without saying that, instead of the one transformer shown with a primary and a plurality of secondary windings, a plurality of transformers with a primary and a secondary winding each can also be used.
To better match the course of the analog To achieve the input signal with the envelope of the DC voltages added across the diode cascade, the A /
So that the voltages generated by the amplifier stages can be added along the diode cascade, only one amplifier stage may be connected to the ground line. Each of the further "floating" amplifier stages is at a higher voltage, the value of which is variable and depends on the number of amplifier stages switched on and the order number of the individual amplifier stages along the diode cascade. In contrast, the switching signals generated by the latch circuit have a constant voltage against the ground line, which is why the switching signals cannot be passed directly to the switching elements. 2 shows an
Instead of the field effect transistor shown, other semiconductor components, for example a bipolar transistor, can also be used. Furthermore, an amplifier can be connected between the photodiode and the switch if the output signal of the photodiode does not allow direct control of the switch.
The single-phase rectifier circuit shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 is simply designed as a one-way rectification. It goes without saying that a midpoint or double path circuit or a double path estimation circuit can also be used to reduce the ripple of the DC voltage.
If, as mentioned above, a three-phase transformer is used and the amplifier stage contains a three-part secondary winding, then a star or double-star rectifier circuit can also be used instead of the three-phase bridge rectifier also mentioned.
92, und der Verbindungspunkt 89 der beiden anderen Kondensatoranschlüsse ist direkt an die Diodenkaskade 93 geführt, die zwischen den einzelnen Anschlüssen je eine Diode 94, 95 aufweist.3 shows a further embodiment of an amplifier stage 80, the rectifier device of which is designed as a two-way rectifier for voltage doubling. For this purpose, one end of the secondary winding 81 is connected via two
The single-phase rectifier device with two-way rectification shown, like the device with one-way rectification described above, can also be designed as a center circuit and for a three-phase transformer as a star or double star rectifier circuit.
