- the present invention relates to a discharge lamp known as a cold cathode tube, with gas filling of the type consisting of a small diameter tube comprising at its two ends electrodes between which the high voltage discharge occurs.
- Tubes of this kind are currently used routinely for the production of letters for illuminated signs and their use is tending to develop also as light sources for various traffic lights. Indeed, these high voltage tubes have greater reliability than the incandescent lamps usually used in said signaling lights and a much longer service life.
- these tubes have other advantages such as an excellent yield in coloring and in brightness and the absence of focusing optics.
- the tube is shaped for its useful front part in the form of a meander or a spiral in a plane and the end bulbs containing the electrodes are bent behind the end of the useful front part of the tube.
- the tubes being bent in a meander or wound in a spiral according to a ply in a plane and the manufacturing techniques obliging, in the case of a meander in particular, to maintain a minimum radius of curvature of the tube which is hardly less than half the diameter, the parallel branches of the meander are spaced at least half a diameter and most often the diameter, this spacing is also necessary for cooling.

- the second ply of the tube is substantially in the same plane as said bulbs so that the overall thickness of the lamp is not substantially amended.
