Abstract

An apparatus for connecting two butt-jointed reinforcing bars provided with surface profiling by a sleeve pressed on by means of a forming die, which has a stationary apparatus part with an abutment for supporting the sleeve and an apparatus part which is movable relative to the stationary apparatus part parallel to the longitudinal direction of the reinforcing bars and which has a mounting for accommodating the forming die, wherein a plurality of cylinder-piston assemblies are disposed between both apparatus parts for applying a concentric drawing force to the forming die and both the abutment and the movable mounting for accommodating the forming die are provided with a respective slot extending from the front end, the width of which corresponds at least to the diameter of the associated reinforcing bar, characterised in that one or more cylinder-piston assembly(ies) acting in the drawing direction of the forming die (35) is (are) disposed eccentrically to the forming die (35), in that on that side of the lastmentioned cylinder-piston assembly(ies) lying opposed to the forming die
(35) there is disposed at least one further cylinder-piston assembly which has an opposed cylinder (8, 8a, 43) and which can be acted upon by pressure medium in the opposite direction, in that the abutment for supporting the sleeve (15) is designed as a bracket (12) and the mounting for the forming die (35) is designed as a cantilever part, and in that the bracket (12) has a two-part supporting socket
(16) which is disposed between the bracket (12) and the adjacent end face of the sleeve (15) and of which the dimensions are so chosen that the forming die (35) is movable up to the end of the sleeve
(15) situated in this zone.
2. An apparatus according to Claim 1, characterised in that the two-part supporting socket (16) comprises two shell-like parts (17', 17") which surround the reinforcing bar (13 and 14) and which at the top end have a respective flange-type widened portion (18', 18").
3. An apparatus according to Claim 2, characterised in that the two parts (17', 17") of the supporting socket (16) with the flange-type widened portions (18', 18") are connected pivotably to the bracket (12) about axes extending parallel to the axis of the forming die (35).
4. An apparatus according to Claim 3, characterised in that springs (21) are provided to retain the two parts (17,17") of the supporting socket (16) in a closed position.

An apparatus according to any of Claims 1 to 4, characterised in that a base plate (29, 29') is provided as mounting for the forming die (35) on the movable lower apparatus part (3) and the forming die (35) is inserted into a recess (66) in the base plate (29,29') widening the longitudinal slot (34,34').
6. An apparatus according to Claim 5, characterised in that the forming die (35, 35', 35") comprises at least two annular parts (36a, 36b or 36a', 36b' or 37a, 37b) which complement one another to form a closed annular cross-section.
7, An apparatus according to Claim 6, characterised in that the forming die (35, 35") comprises two parts of different arc length, of which the shorter, inner part (36, 36a') is connected securely but detachably, e. g. by bolts, to the base plate (29, 29') and the longer, outer part (36b, 36b') can be inserted loosely into the recess (66) in the base plate (29, 29').
8. An apparatus according to Claim 7, characterised in that on its underside the outer part (36b') has a shoulder (64) with which it bears against corresponding abutments (65) on the front ends (33') of the base plate (29') (Fig. 9 and 10).
9. An apparatus according to any of Claims 1 to 8, characterised in that the cylinder chambers (5 or 5a, 5b and 7 or 7a) of all the cylinder-piston assemblies are provided in a uniform cylindrical housing (4) forming the stationary apparatus part (2, 2a).
10. An apparatus according to any of Claims 1 to 8, characterised in that all the cylinder-piston assemblies are each mounted independently on a base plate (44) and are connected, e. g. bolted, thereto and to an upper cover plate (45).
11. An apparatus according to Claim 10, characterised in that a stiffening plate (47) is disposed in the plane of action of the force resultants and is securely connected, e. g. welded or bolted, both to the base plate (44) and to the cover plate (45).
