- the present invention relates to a paper feeding method in printers such as those used in data processing systems where a printing form with perforations on the sides or a printing support without side perforations can be used as a printing support. It is known that most users of printers for data processing system require that such printers be able to operate both with perforated printing supports and with continuous printing forms without lateral perforations.
- the described example of paper feeding mechanism can operate with non perforated printing forms having different width (the maximum width is however determined by the distance between the pin wheels) but it has the disadvantage of beingunable to handle side perforated printing forms having different sizes, as the distance between the pin wheels cannot be changed.
- a first mechanism is supplied to assure the friction feeding of non perforated continuous printing forms (which may have different width). It consists in a feeding roll fixed to a first tractor bar and cooperating with pressure rollers.
- a second mechanism assures the feeding of the continuous side perforated printing form. It consists in two pin wheels cooperating with pads and mounted on a second tractor bar. The pin wheels may be axially moved along the second bar and locked in a determined position, thus allowing to operate with printing forms having different width.
- the tractor bars are actuated by the same motor by means of a belt pulley or gear transmission system.
- the embodiment involving the use of two separate feeding mechanisms solves the problem to operate with several sizes both of the side perforated printing form both of the unperforated printing form but makes the printer structure complicated, expensive as well as cumbersome.
- the present invention overcomes such disadvantages and provides a method which allows to operate with different sizes of both side perforated printing forms and unperforated printing forms by means of a simple and inexpensive paper feeding mechanism.
- a paper feeding mechanism may comprise a pair of feeding wheels each one provided with circumferential sprocket pins engageable in perforations along the edges of multilayered paper strips for advancing same and with a frictional tire element immediately adjacent to the sprocket pins, for slightly increasing the diameter of the wheel and functioning to frictionally engage and overdrive the last copy of the multilayered strips at the same rate of speed as the first copy and thereby prevent shingling of the paper layers of the strips.
- such paper feeding mechanism may be used to feed both non perforated printing forms as well as side perforated printing forms, provided the feeding wheels may be axially moved along a tractor bar and locked in any desired position: thus it is possible to operate with printing forms of different width, up to a maximum width imposed by the printer structure.

Claims (1)
- Procédé d'avancement de papier dans une imprimante du type qui comprend:- une barre d'entraînement (13) montée sur un bâti (1, 2, 3),- deux éléments d'avancement (7, 8) montés sur cette barre d'entraînement, actionnés par cette barre et pouvant coulisser axialement le long de cette barre, chacun de ces éléments d'avancement étant muni, sur une surface extérieure cylindrique, de pointes (8A) pour l'avancement d'un formulaire perforé sur les bords, par engagement des pointes dans les perforations latérales du formulaire, et de moyens de frottement (36) situés auprès des pointes et tournés les uns vers les autres sur la face extérieure cylindrique,- deux éléments de positionnement et de guidage (9, 10) accouplés chacun à l'un des éléments d'avancement (7, 8) de manière à bloquer ces éléments d'avancement dans une position axiale déterminée le long de la barre (13),- deux patins presseurs (11, 12) articulés chacun à l'un des éléments de guidage (9, 10) et pouvant se poser par dessus l'un des éléments d'avancement (7, 8), ces patins presseurs (11, 12) guidant l'engagement de plusieurs des pointes (8A) dans un nombre correspondant de perforations latérales du formulaire perforé latéralement, chacun des patins presseurs (11, 12) étant muni d'au moins un rouleau presseur fou (34, 35) ayant un axe parallèle à la barre (13), au moins quand le patin presseur correspondant est placé en position active par dessus l'élément d'avancement, les bords d'un formulaire inséré dans l'élément d'avancement étant pressés par les rouleaux presseurs contre les moyens de frottement (36) des éléments d'avancement (7, 8) quand les patins presseurs (11, 12) sont placés en position active,
le procédé étant caractérisé par les étapes suivantes:- positionner axialement les deux éléments d'avancement (7, 8) sur la barre d'entraînement (13) au moyen des deux éléments de guidage (9, 10) de façon que la distance entre les moyens de frottement (36) prévus sur l'un des éléments d'avancement (7, 8) et les moyens de frottement (36) prévus sur l'autre éléments d'avancement (7, 8) soit inférieure à la largeur d'un formulaire d'impression non perforé à faire avancer mais que la distance entre les pointes (8A) prévues sur l'un des éléments d'avancement (7, 8) et les pointes (8A) prévues sur l'autre élément d'avancement (7, 8) soit plus grande que la largeur du formulaire d'impression non perforé,- insérer les bords du formulaire d'impression entre les moyens de frottement et les rouleaux presseurs correspondants, en position centrée de façon que les bords n'accrochent pas les pointes,- actionnner les éléments d'avancement (7, 8) de manière à faire avancer le formulaire d'impression au moyen des moyens de frottement (36).
