Since the flanges 170 and 171 of the fastener (Fig.7) are tapered, and since the fasteners 168 are inserted at an angle sloped toward the ' inside of the right angle formed by the frame elements (Fig. 8), the flanges 170 and 171 ' tend to be deflected apart from each other as they engage the grain 9 of the wood, thereby tending to draw the grain together. There ⁇ fore the frame elements are drawn together as the fastener enters the material of the frame elements, thus assuring firm abutment of the frame elements.
