Description

The present invention relates to a method of fixing precious stones to a frame, which fixing is carried out using individual pieces, constituted by a head and by a rod, said head having a frustoconical lower part produced so as to bear on the bevel of the table of the stone or stones to be fixed.

It is known, in jewelry, to fix the precious stones on a support frame by means of claws shaped on said frame.

We have also described, in patent FR-A-1 379 772, a method of fixing precious stones on a frame consisting essentially of using stirrups arranged on the frame perpendicular to the alignment of said stones and pressing on two adjoining stones of said alignment. The brackets are fixed to the frame by brazing. This process has certain limitations when one wants to fix several contiguous rows of stones and presents some difficulties for fixing the stirrups on the frame.

Finally, there has also been described, in FR-A-807480, a system for mounting stones for jewelry in which the breech of the stone is immobilized in a kitten in the form of a frustoconical bowl, with concave generator, by at least two screws which are fixed in ears framing said bowl and whose heads, frustoconical, bear on the bevel of the table of this stone. This mounting system is theoretically interesting but is relatively difficult to implement given the dimensions of the screws (and the threads) to be used.

The present invention relates to an industrial method of fixing precious stones on a frame making it possible to overcome the difficulties due to the use of known fixing techniques.

The method according to the present invention is characterized in that said rod being provided with at least one protuberance which, cooperating with the corresponding hole made in the frame, causes sufficient friction to cause the jamming of each individual piece put in place.

The individual parts which can be used according to the invention therefore comprise a rod and a head.

The rod is intended to enter a hole in the frame so as to secure said part with the frame. To achieve this joining, essentially the wedging of said rod (provided with at least one protuberance) will be used inside the hole made in the frame. In the particular case where a gold frame and an individual piece also made of gold are used, it has been found that for rods of at least one circular protrusion, a frame should preferably be used before a hardness of 50 to 60 vickers, a rivet of 130 to 140 vickers and to ensure that the diameter of the part of the rod which comes into contact with the internal surface of the hole is approximately 0.02 mm greater than the diameter of said hole.

It is possible after placing stones using these individual parts to secure these parts with the frame using a welding point but this precaution is not essential.

What is called "protrusion on the rod of the individual parts is a metal portion projecting from the cylindrical surface forming the rod. This protuberance can be formed of several individual elements (pins) or of a collar or preferably a frustoconical collar whose ends are very fine (cf. figure). There may be one or more similar or different growths on the same stem.

Les têtes peuvent avoir des formes très différentes circulaires, ellipsoïdales, triangulaires, en étoile, etc...The heads of the individual parts which can be used according to the invention are intended, by their lower face, to press at a point (or along a small area) on the upper face of the edge of a stone. It therefore suffices that this head has sufficient dimensions in width (beyond the rod) to rest on the stone (s). It will be noted that in a particular embodiment of the invention said head can be formed, on the spot, by deformation of the end of the rod which comes out of the hole made in the frame. The heads can have very different circular, ellipsoidal, triangular, star, etc. shapes.

In the case where it is desired to fix a single stone on a frame, at least two individual pieces according to the invention will be used.

However, when it is desired to fix several stones, it is very advantageous according to the invention to ensure that each piece presses on at least two contiguous stones. If the stones are arranged in a row, it is preferable to use, on either side of the axis of this row, two pieces each resting on two adjoining stones. If the stones are arranged in several rows, it will be advantageous, depending on the relative arrangement of the stones, to use pieces capable of resting on three or four of the adjoining stones.

The present invention can be used for fixing precious stones on any frame but it is particularly advantageous in the case of a metal or precious metal alloy frame.

The preparation of the frame for implementing the invention is particularly simple; it will suffice on the one hand, to make in this frame holes or cells of cylindrical shape capable of receiving the stones and then on the other hand, to drill holes, suitably placed, intended to receive the rods of the individual pieces usable. Note in particular that if the holes or cells intended to receive the stones must have diameters adapted to said parts, the precision of the machining of these holes is much less important than in the case of fixing the stones by other industrialized systems.

For example, there is shown in the single figure an individual piece according to the invention used for fixing two adjoining stones on a frame.

In this figure are shown schematically:
  • - in 1 the frame; this setting is made of gold with a hardness of 55 vickers; in this mount, a blind hole 2 with a diameter of 0.43 mm has been provided,
  • - In 3 two stones which are shown as arranged on the upper surface of the frame, in fact, taking into account the shape of the precious stones and in particular for example diamonds, these stones are placed in holes (not shown) formed in the mount.
  • - In 4 the individual fixing piece which consists of a rod 5 and a head 6; the stem has three growths which have the shape of a truncated cone and which give said stem the general shape of a fir tree; these outgrowths have diameters of 0.45 mm and the individual piece is made of gold having a hardness of 130 vickers; the head of each individual piece presses, by its underside, the bevel of the table of two neighboring stones 3.
