Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to microwave couplers with waveguides.
In most microwave devices, it is necessary to be able to take a determined part of the signal generated, in order to measure the various parameters defining this microwave signal and, possibly, to correct them according to the conditions of use. This operation is carried out using devices known as couplers, which take a determined percentage of the power conveyed, for example in. a waveguide or by a line of the microstrip type.
The microwave emission sources delivering often high powers, the most suitable means of propagation is then the waveguide. However, these waveguides do not allow sufficient frequency bandwidth, in particular for modern electromagnetic detection systems. To overcome this drawback of the narrowness of frequency bandwidth for a given propagation mode, the prior art uses waveguides provided with one or more steps. These steps consist of conductive bars fixed to the interior walls of the waveguide, at determined locations, and in electrical contact with the walls of this waveguide. Depending on the number, the shape, and the position of these steps in the waveguide, the frequency bandwidth is increased more or less. The most commonly used type of these modified waveguides, has two steps of parallelepiped shape and which are fixed on the interior walls of the waveguide, so as to be parallel to the axis of symmetry of the waveguide and so that the longitudinal plane of symmetry and parallel to the short side of the cross section of this waveguide is also a longitudinal plane of symmetry for each of these steps.
Microwave couplers using this type of guide wave wave, according to the prior art, made from two wave guides with two steps, parallel to each other and having a wall comprising a step common to these two wave guides. Holes of determined diameter are then made in the common wall so as to establish coupling. The number of these holes and their diameter depends on the desired coupling rate as well as the impedance matching conditions which are imposed by the system.
The main drawback of these couplers is their size. For a coupling rate of 10 db, it is common to obtain lengths exceeding 30 cm, which may prohibit their use in small devices such as for example missile heads.
The present invention aims to remedy this drawback by defining a microwave coupler with two waveguides, each using at least one step, and whose coupling characteristics are at least equal to the coupler of the hole type of the prior art but whose size is very small.
According to a characteristic of the invention, the hyper-frequency coupler with two parallel waveguides and having a common wall, is characterized in that this common wall is pierced with slots parallel to a cross section of these two guides d 'wave.
Other advantages and characteristics of the invention will appear in the description which follows, illustrated with the aid of the single figure which represents an embodiment of a microwave coupler with two waveguides according to the invention.
The prior art knows microwave couplers with small waveguides; these are produced using conventional waveguides with rectangular section without steps, and are known by the Anglo-Saxon name "branch line". Coupling, in this type of coupler, is ensured by sections of waveguides mounted orthogonally to the two waveguides whose coupling is desired. Their major drawback is a limitation frequency bandwidth, precisely because of the use of these waveguide sections without steps as coupling elements.
This technical prejudice of limiting the frequency bandwidth due to the waveguide without steps as a coupling element, is overcome in the coupler according to the invention. Indeed, it uses as coupling elements slots, whose shape is rectangular in the optimal embodiment according to the invention. These can therefore be compared to sections of waveguides without steps. Experiments have shown that the use of such a coupling means makes it possible to obtain results which are often better than those obtained with microwave couplers of the hole type of the prior art, in particular as regards the width of the strip. frequency bandwidth, while requiring a very small footprint compared to the latter.
- a = 20 ; b = 28 ; c=9,1; i=58; j = 20; k = 15;
- l=8,4; m=4; n=13; o=20; p=20; q=58; s=36,8.
- a = 20; b = 28; c = 9.1; i = 58; j = 20; k = 15;
- l = 8.4; m = 4; n = 13; o = 20; p = 20; q = 58; s = 36.8.
The microwave coupler described above is only one example of an embodiment suitable for waveguides with two steps. Similarly, the ohmic terminations and the waveguide-coaxial line coupler can be replaced by other types of terminations adapted to the operation of the device in which the microwave coupler is mounted.
In the case where the waveguides used have a particular structure, and in particular when the section of these waveguides comprises more than two steps, it is necessary to adapt the shape of the sections of waveguides 2 and 5 as well as the transitions 4 and 6 so as not to have, in the part of the microwave coupler corresponding to the conductive plate 7, steps in contact with this conductive plate 7 pierced with slots. For this, it may be necessary to reduce and then delete certain steps respectively in the transitions 4 and 6 and in the sections of waveguides 2 and 5, as is the case for the
The practical determination of the different dimensions of the microwave coupler, and in particular the width of the
A microwave coupler with a large frequency passband and of small size has thus been described.
