Abstract

1. Process for the pickling of metals, especially rust-resisting and acid-resisting steels, by spraying a pickling paste onto the surface to be pickled, characterised in that, before the spray-coating of the pickling paste, a surfactant is sprayed onto the surface, so that, when the pickling paste is sprayed on, a film of the surfactant is already present on the surface.

Description

The invention relates to a method for pickling metals, in particular stainless steel, by spraying a pickling paste onto the surface to be pickled.

Pickling pastes are usually applied to metallic surfaces using a brush, broom, brush or the like. However, this working method is very labor-intensive and has several disadvantages:
  • 1. The staining paste is applied unevenly with the aid and thus different staining of the surface is achieved, ie after the staining you can see the individual brushstrokes on the surface.
  • 2. The pastes are highly viscous so that they do not drip off the implement. This means that the consumption is relatively high (approx. 0.5 kg / m 2 ).
  • 3. It takes a long time to apply. Pickling paste is difficult or inadequate to apply in hard-to-reach places.
  • 4. The processor must come very close to the surface and thus to the relatively dangerous substance, so that the usual application process is not easy to process.

No. 3,598,741 describes the spraying of a highly viscous pickling paste on metal. This also results in the disadvantages mentioned above. The invention is based on this method.

The invention is therefore based on the object of proposing a method for pickling metals which is distinguished by a higher working speed, lower material consumption, better quality of the pickling process and increased user friendliness. To achieve this object, the invention is characterized in that a surfactant solution is sprayed onto the surface before the spraying of the pickling paste, so that when the spraying pickling paste is sprayed on, a film of the surfactant solution is already on the surface.

The viscosity of the surfactant solution is adjusted so that on the one hand it is still sprayable, but on the other hand it does not run off completely on vertical surfaces. This creates an approximately 0.1 mm thick liquid film with surface-active substances on the entire surface to be treated.

The pickling paste is then sprayed on in a second step. Spraying ensures that the entire area is applied evenly. However, the pickling paste is set so low viscous that it can be sprayed through a single-component nozzle (e.g. a lime nozzle) at about 3 to 5 bar. The active acids now diffuse into the liquid film, so that a state is reached which corresponds to that of immersing the workpiece in a pickling bath.

Because both the surfactant and the pickling paste are sprayed on, no traces of an application tool appear on the treated area. In addition, corners and the like that are otherwise difficult to access are easy to spray. For this purpose, a spray lance with a suitable nozzle (lime nozzle) is preferably used. The process requires less material, so that there is a material saving despite the additional use of the surfactant. Usually you need more than 0.5 kg of pickling paste to pickle a square meter. In the method according to the invention, only about 0.25 kg are required for one square meter plus about 0.1 kg of surfactant solution.

The working speed is also noticeably increased, so that despite the necessary two-coat application (surfactant solution and pickling paste), an area can be stained in about half the time than was the case in the prior art. The surface quality in the process according to the invention corresponds to that after the immersion process.

All rust and acid resistant steels, nickel and nickel alloys as well as copper-nickel alloys can be pickled using the new process.

The viscosity of the pickling paste is about half as large as the viscosity of a pickling paste to be applied with a brush, as was previously used by the applicant. Depending on the shear rate of the pickling paste measured in sec-1, this factor is 0.41 at a shear rate of 106 and increases from 1 198 to 0.68 at a shear rate. The viscosity of the new pickling paste, also measured in mPa.s, is e.g. at shear rate 106 at 126 and at shear rate 1 198 at 29.7 (all data in mPa.s).
