  • Drafting pulls of 25,000 Kg are obtainable with area reductions per stage in excess of 40% easily realisable. Although cooling has to be accomplished in a much shorter time than with a prior art capstan machine, we have successfully dissipated 33 KW of power in one stage of a multi-stage apparatus with an output wire temperature from that stage of less than 90°C (representing a temperature increase of less than 75°C). Drafting speeds in excess of 22 m/sec have also been achieved and it is expected that drawing speeds at least equal to the best obtainable in prior art capstan machines can be obtained. Galvanised and un- galvanised ferrous wires can be drawn by the method of the invention.

Claims (6)

1. Procédé pour étirer un fil métallique, suivant lequel on tire un fil à travers un lubrifiant, puis à travers un orifice calibré (6, 6') en appliquant le fil sur au moins une partie d'une spire autour d'un tambour de traction tournant (1, 1') pour produire la traction d'étirage nécessaire pour tirer le fil à travers l'orifice calibré, on amène le fil sortant de l'orifice calibré en contact avec un agent de refroidissement (8, 8') différant du lubrifiant et on élimine l'agent de refroidissement du fil en aval du tambour (par l'intermédiaire de 9, 9'), caractérisé en ce qu'au moins une partie initiale de ce fil enroulé sur au moins une partie d'une spire autour du tambour est placée dans un bain (13, 27) de l'agent de refroidissement liquide supporté contre le tambour par un capot (13, 13') qui entoure étroitement le tambour sur une partie substantielle de sa circonférence en aval du point de premier contact du fil avec le tambour.
2. Procédé suivant la revendication 1, dans lequel l'agent de refroidissement liquide refroidit l'élément délimitant l'orifice calibré et forme une colonne de liquide en mouvement qui entoure le fil à sa sortie de l'orifice calibré, caractérisé en ce que la colonne (8, 8') de l'agent de refroidissement reste autour du fil (W, W') lorsqu'il entre en contact avec le tambour.
3. Procédé suivant la revendication 1 ou 2, caractérisé en ce que le fil (W') traverse le bain (27) plus d'une fois avant de quitter le tambour (1').
4. Appareil à tréfiler comprenant un récipient (5) pour un lubrifiant, un orifice calibré (6, 6') pour le fil (W, W'), un dispositif (7, 7') pour fournir un agent de refroidissement liquide destiné à entourer le fil (W, W') qui quitte l'orifice calibré (6, 6') un tambour de traction tournant (1, 1') en aval de l'orifice calibré (6, 6') avec un dispositif (3, 3') pour faire tourner le tambour (1, 1 ') dans un sens visant à étirer le fil, appliqué suivant au moins une partie de spire autour du tambour (1, 1') à travers le récipient 5, un lubrifiant différant de l'agent de refroidissement dans le récipient (5) et l'orifice calibré (6, 6'), un dispositif pour maintenir le fil mouillé par l'agent de refroidissement liquide sur le tambour (1, 1') et un dispositif (9, 9') en aval du tambour (1, 1') pour enlever l'agent de refroidissement liquide du fil, caractérisé en ce qu'un capot (13, 13') est appliqué tout près de la surface de contact avec le fil (24, 26) du tambour (1, 1') sur une partie de spire autour de ce tambour à partir du point de contact initial du fil avec le tambour (1, 1') pour assurer que le fil soit immergé dans un bain (27) de l'agent de refroidissement liquide sur au moins une partie initiale d'une spire du fil sur le tambour (1, 1').
5. Appareil suivant la revendication 4, caractérisé en ce que le tambour (1') est pourvu d'une gorge sans fin (2') formée entre des joues latérales, la gorge pouvant recevoir plusieurs spires disposées côte à côte, le capot (13') étant disposé près des joues latérales sur une partie d'une spire autour du tambour.
6. Appareil suivant la revendication 4 ou 5, caractérisé en ce que le capot (13, 13') peut être rapproché et écarté du tambour (1, 1') pour faciliter l'enfilage de l'appareil.
