Definitions
- the invention relates to a centrifuge for the continuous separation of solid-liquid mixtures and mixtures of liquids of different densities, which is provided with an inlet chamber for the phases to be separated and with outlets for the discharge of the separated phases.
- the known centrifuges which are normally used for the separation of such feed mixtures, are tubular shell-plate centrifuges and three-phase solid shell screw centrifuges. All of these known centrifuge types are only equipped with two main chambers, namely a liquid or water chamber and a separation chamber into which the feed mixture is introduced. Both chambers are formed by a baffle plate or a dividing wall arranged in the discharge area of the centrifuge, the outer edge of which protrudes approximately into the boundary layer region of the liquid phases to be separated from one another.
- the object of the invention is to provide a centrifuge design which, in spite of changes in the liquid density, the viscosity and the flow rate of one or the other phase, enables the phases which are separated from one another in the centrifuge to be obtained in as pure a form as possible.
- This object is thereby achieved that in the discharge area of the centrifuge are spaced from each other, which form separate chambers for the individual phases, which are in open connection with the corresponding outlets or overflow weirs.
- the individual phases can collect undisturbed in these chambers formed by the partition walls according to the invention, in which the level of the liquid phases is established in the manner of communicating vessels, from where they are discharged to the outside through corresponding outlets.
- the outlets are very advantageously overflows.
- the measures according to the invention are therefore very advantageous - in spite of deviations in the liquid density, the viscosity and the flow rate of one or the other liquid phase that occur during operation of the centrifuge - a relatively stable position of the boundary layers between the liquid phases is achieved, as a result of which the mixtures in the separating chamber are already mixed phases of the centrifuge are largely avoided.
- the depth of the partitions is arranged to be adjustable in the phases to be separated from one another.
- the partitions can very advantageously the interfacial layers of the phases to be separated from one another which are established during operation are set. This is particularly advantageous if large deviations in the liquid density, the viscosity and / or the flow rate of one or the other liquid phase of the feed material are to be expected.
- the partition is provided with recesses on the periphery. In this way, the passage of the respectively separated phase from one chamber into the collecting chamber is favored.
- the partition walls are arranged in the screw flights and / or on the screw spirals.
- tubes are provided as outlets for the discharge of the individual phases, said tubes leading outward from the chambers, approximately radially and / or axially.
- outlets or overflow weirs can also be very advantageously adjusted in height.
- centrifuges shown schematically in FIGS. 1, 2, 3A and 3B are known, different embodiments for the continuous separation of mixtures of liquids of different densities, for example oil and water.
- These centrifuges essentially consist of a rotary container 1, to which the liquid mixture to be separated is supplied from the outside in the direction of the arrow 2.
- the interior of the rotating container 1 is divided in the discharge area into a chamber A and an inlet chamber C by an annular disk-shaped partition 3.
- the outer or lower edge of the partition 3 extends below the interface layer 3 'which arises during operation.
- the chambers A and C are openly connected with outlets 4 pointing upwards for the heavier and 5 for the lighter liquid phase.
- the outlets 4 and 5 are provided at their ends with ring-shaped overflow weirs 6 and 7.
- the outlet 5 with the weir 7 is adapted to the surface 3 "of the lighter phase, while the outlet 4 with the weir 6 is adapted to the liquid surface of the heavier phase.
- centrifuge parts and chambers shown in the figures are provided with the same reference numbers and letters.
- one or more tubes are provided as outlets 4 for the heavier liquid and 5 for the lighter phase Lead outwards.
- the outlet 5 for the lighter phase is designed as a tube, while the discharge for the heavier liquid takes place via an overflow weir 6 arranged on the centrifuge.
- FIG. 6 shows, an additional dividing wall 8, which extends beyond the liquid surfaces, is installed in the chamber C of the separating container 1 shown in FIG. 4, so that an additional chamber B is created.
- the partition 8 separates the chamber C from the chambers A and B, so that separate chambers are formed for the different liquid phases, in which the liquid phases can collect undisturbed, and from where they are discharged to the outside via the outlets 4 and 5 will.
- the level of the light phase rises in it and the liquid interface 3 'falls until it has reached the lower edge of the partition 8, from where the light phase passes from the chamber C into the chamber B.
- the liquid level in the chamber B and the liquid level in the chamber A remain unchanged by the use of the partition 8. The same also applies to the liquid interface in the chamber B.
- this device shown in Figure 6, is capable of maintaining both a constant liquid interface and a relatively constant volume of the lighter phase in chamber C, regardless of the changes in densities between the lighter and heavier phases, and also regardless of Effects of the overflow heights at the outlets.
- the separating device shown in FIG. 6 can be very easily improved by installing a further partition 9 in the chamber C.
- the partition 9 is arranged in the chamber C in such a way that the upper edge ends at a short distance below the surface, while its lower edge projects beyond the phase interface surface 3 'into the layer of the heavier phase.
- the partition 9 is arranged at a relatively short distance from the partition 8, so that an overflow channel D is formed between the two walls for the easier phase.
- this intermediate phase can be an emulsion of oil and water, plastic or wood particles, and other solids that float at the interface between oil and water.
- This interface material referred to as the intermediate phase, can lead to a displacement of the interface between the oil phase or the water phase, such that this interface material flows together with the oil phase over the partition 9 or together with the water phase under the partition 9.
- An accumulation of interface material in the centrifuge leads to a considerable deterioration in the separation performance.
- the interface material cannot accumulate too much in the chamber C and can be discharged either with the oil, with the water separately or with the solids.
- the interface material flows with the oil flow from the chamber C under the partition 8 or under the partition 9 into the chamber B, it is discharged together with the oil. In this case, a pure water phase and an oil phase mixed with interface material are obtained, which can optionally be subjected to a subsequent separation.
- the liquid interface in chamber C is determined by the immersion depth of partition 8, which separates channel D from chamber B.
- the partition 9 is here provided with a bottom part 9 'which, starting from the bottom edge, runs obliquely upwards in the direction of the partition 3 and is connected to it or protrudes slightly beyond it.
- the lower part of the partition 9 is a little lower than the lower edge of the partition 8.Dää accumulating in the chamber C interface material flows under the bottom wall 9 'and from there to the chamber A, from where it with the liquid through Pipe 4 is carried out.
- the separation performance in chamber C is not impaired by the comparatively small accumulation of interface material, so that a very pure oil phase free of interface material can be discharged from chamber B through discharge tube 5 and obtained.
- the partition 3 is provided with an opening a through which pure water, however no interface material can penetrate into the chamber B, so that the interface layer can form undisturbed in this chamber.
- the interface material are also very beneficial discharged separated from the liquid phase, particularly b .EI solid floating substances is very advantageous.
- a pipe socket 15 which completely surrounds the liquid discharge pipe 4 at a certain distance to a certain depth, the interface material that accumulates in the chamber A can be discharged in the direction of the arrow 16, for example with the screw conveyor or in some other way.
- Interface material that accumulates in the chamber C can be carried into the chamber A under the partition 9a.
- this interface material cannot enter the channel D or the chamber B because the bottom edges of the partitions 9b and 3 are considerably lower than the lower edge of the partition 9a.
- FIGS. 10A and 10B can be used particularly advantageously in solid bowl centrifuges.
- the partition walls as shown in FIG. 11, are simply mounted between the screw augers Fn and Fn + 1 which are spaced apart from one another.
- FIGS. 12 and 13 show the special arrangement of the measures according to the invention in a tubular jacket centrifuge and in a plate centrifuge. While the lighter phase here passes from chamber C into channel D and from there under partition 8 into chamber B, it must flow through the liquid layer of the heavier phase in the lower part of chamber B before it reaches the phase layer in the upper region of the Chamber B reached. During this run, the lighter phase can take some of the heavier liquid with it. However, as shown in FIGS. 14A and 14B, this process can be reduced by arranging recesses 10 on the periphery of the partition 8. The lighter phase can very advantageously pass through these recesses 10 in the form of a compact stream, as a result of which the remixing of liquids is largely avoided.
- the partition 9 can also be very advantageously U-shaped. In the lower area of this partition 9, however, a small opening 11 is to be provided in order to ensure that the hydrostatic equilibrium can develop undisturbed in chamber B.
- each partition or baffle plate according to the invention is shown in the figures shown in the drawings essentially as flat plates. It is understood, however, that the shape of each partition or baffle can be adapted to the corresponding requirements of the centrifuge shape. This means that accessories for the centrifuge can also be included in the partitions.
- the partition walls 3 shown in the figures, which are already installed in existing centrifuges, can take over the function of the partition wall 8 and a new partition wall according to the invention can be added.
- the centrifuges shown in FIGS. 15 and 16 are three-phase solid-bowl screw centrifuges with a screw conveyor located inside the rotating centrifuge drum and arranged coaxially in the centrifuge drum.
- the speed of rotation of the screw conveyor differs a little from the speed of rotation of the centrifuge drum 12, whereby the sedimented solids are caught by the screw spirals 12 'and transported along the inner wall of the centrifuge drum to the conical discharge end 12A. 15, the solids on the cone are moved upward by the screw spirals 12 ′ over the liquid surface in the chamber A and are discharged through the outlet 14.
- liquid phases for example oil and water
- solids corresponding recesses are provided in the coils 12 'of the screw conveyor in the area of the discharge pipes 4 and 5.
- other discharge options known per se can also be used for the removal of the liquid phases.
- the liquid phases can also be discharged from the inside of the centrifuge with the help of channels or pipes arranged on the screw conveyor, or by means of suitable gripper devices.
- a new chamber E can also be formed very advantageously between the chambers C and A in a three-phase solid-bowl screw centrifuge by installing a further partition 15 ', specifically for the separate discharge of the intermediate phase, e.g. in the form of an emulsion in chamber C under the oil layer.
- the intermediate phase is guided here under the partition 9, from where it enters the chamber E and is discharged to the outside through the pipe 4 '.
- the water is discharged with the sedimented solids through the solids discharge opening 14.
- FIGS. 17A, 17B and 17C show further preferred arrangements of the partition walls according to the invention, as are already shown in FIGS. 10A, 10B, 11 and 16.
- the outlets 4 'and 5 or their overflow weirs are set so that they are slightly above the effective height of the solids discharge opening 14'. stand.
- the upper edge of the partition 9b is set a little below the effective height of the overflow weir 5.
- the lower edge of the partition 8 is used as deep as the oil layer in the separation chamber C requires.
- the lower edge of the partition 9a (FIG. 17A) is set a little below the lower edge of the partition 8.
- the centrifuge Before introducing the liquid-solid mixture, the centrifuge must be supplied with enough water until it almost reaches the solids discharge opening 14 '.
- the water is displaced by feeding the oil-emulsion-water and solid mixture into chamber C. flows out under the partition walls via the solids discharge opening 14 '.
- the solids that settle on the bottom of the container are caught by the screw spirals 12 'and transported to the end of the solids discharge, where they exit together with the water phase.
- the oil collects in the chamber C until it has reached a sufficient hydraulic level to wash the partition 8.
- the oil then flows from the chamber C via the partition 9b into the channel D and from there under the partition 8 into the chamber B, from where it enters the discharge pipe 5 and is discharged.
- the depth of the oil layer in the chamber C is determined mechanically by the depth of the partition 8.
- the layer depth of the oil in chamber B is the result of the effective height difference between the overflow weir of the pipe 5 and weir height of the solids discharge opening 14 'and the result of the density relationships between the oil phase and the water phase.
- the emulsion collects in chamber C directly under the oil layer until it has reached a certain layer height and enters chamber E under partition 9a.
- the emulsion accumulating in the chamber E then exits through the overflow weir of the tube 4 '.
- the depth of the emulsion layer in the chamber E is the result of the effective height difference from the overflow weir of the discharge pipe 4 'and the solids discharge opening 14' and the result of the density ratio between the emulsion phase and the water phase.
- the advantages of the three-liquid phase centrifuge designed according to the invention can best be understood by comparing an oil extraction process using this centrifuge with existing processes, in which two centrifuges connected in series are often required. For a better illustration, a comparison is made when extracting oil from tar sand.
- the use of the Of course, the three-liquid solid-bowl screw centrifuge designed according to the invention is not limited to these comparative examples, but the centrifuge according to the invention is also suitable for any other multi-phase liquid-solid separation.
- the mixture of oil, emulsion, water and fine solids (sludge) is subjected to intensive shear stresses in the centrifuge at high speed and leads to increased emulsion products, which make a subsequent separation of the oil and water phases more difficult.
- the oil, emulsion, water and residual sludge mixture is then centrifuged in a nozzle plate centrifuge which carries out three phases, namely sludge, water and a mixture of oil and emulsion.
- the clay and the fine solid accompanying substances in the feed material lead to high maintenance costs for this second centrifugation stage.
- the nozzles of this disc centrifuge must be relatively large in order to prevent blocking by remaining coarse particles after the first spin stage. The large nozzles require a significant increase in performance as well as a correspondingly voluminous increase in the water flow through the nozzle.
- the solids transport capacity of the centrifuge according to the invention is higher than the centrifuges known to date.
- the centrifuges designed according to the invention enable an oil phase to be obtained in the purest form possible.
- the emulsion phase also contains only a low solids content.
- the emulsion phase can be treated with a demulsifier to remove the remaining water without the need for large amounts of demulsifier, which would be necessary if all of the oil were mixed with the emulsion.
- the plate centrifuge emulsion could be applied, which can be much smaller than that required for the existing processes, since it would not be necessary to process the large volumes of oil and water that are available with the existing processes accumulate, and most of the abrasive particles would already have been removed.
- the invention is not restricted to the embodiments shown in the drawings.
- the invention can be used in the same way for plate centrifuges with circumferentially arranged nozzles for the continuous discharge of the solids as well as for plate centrifuges in an open jacket design.
- the invention can also be used advantageously in any other type of centrifuge with one or more centripetal pumps or stripping devices and separate discharges for the liquid phases.
- centripetal pumps or stripping devices separate discharges for the liquid phases.

Description
The invention relates to a centrifuge for the continuous separation of solid-liquid mixtures and mixtures of liquids of different densities, which is provided with an inlet chamber for the phases to be separated and with outlets for the discharge of the separated phases.
The known centrifuges, which are normally used for the separation of such feed mixtures, are tubular shell-plate centrifuges and three-phase solid shell screw centrifuges. In the operation of these known centrifuges, however, it cannot be avoided that, due to deviations in the level of the boundary layers between the liquid phases and due to changes in the liquid densities or viscosities, mixing of the phases already separated from one another in the separation area of the centrifuge occurs, in fact by bypassing or flowing around the partition that forms the two chambers. With these known centrifuges, the individual phases separated from one another in the centrifuges cannot always be removed and obtained in pure form from the centrifuges in fluctuating operating states.
Überlaufwehren in offener Verbindung stehen. The object of the invention is to provide a centrifuge design which, in spite of changes in the liquid density, the viscosity and the flow rate of one or the other phase, enables the phases which are separated from one another in the centrifuge to be obtained in as pure a form as possible. This object is thereby achieved that in the discharge area of the centrifuge are spaced from each other, which form separate chambers for the individual phases, which are in open connection with the corresponding outlets or overflow weirs. The individual phases can collect undisturbed in these chambers formed by the partition walls according to the invention, in which the level of the liquid phases is established in the manner of communicating vessels, from where they are discharged to the outside through corresponding outlets. The outlets are very advantageously overflows. The measures according to the invention are therefore very advantageous - in spite of deviations in the liquid density, the viscosity and the flow rate of one or the other liquid phase that occur during operation of the centrifuge - a relatively stable position of the boundary layers between the liquid phases is achieved, as a result of which the mixtures in the separating chamber are already mixed phases of the centrifuge are largely avoided.
According to a further advantageous embodiment of the invention, the depth of the partitions is arranged to be adjustable in the phases to be separated from one another. In this way, the partitions can very advantageously the interfacial layers of the phases to be separated from one another which are established during operation are set. This is particularly advantageous if large deviations in the liquid density, the viscosity and / or the flow rate of one or the other liquid phase of the feed material are to be expected.
In a further advantageous embodiment of the invention, the partition is provided with recesses on the periphery. In this way, the passage of the respectively separated phase from one chamber into the collecting chamber is favored.
In the case of a centrifuge with a screw discharge, according to a further advantageous embodiment of the invention, the partition walls are arranged in the screw flights and / or on the screw spirals. As a result, both solid-liquid mixtures and mixtures of liquids of different densities can be separated from one another very advantageously.
According to a further advantageous embodiment of the invention, tubes are provided as outlets for the discharge of the individual phases, said tubes leading outward from the chambers, approximately radially and / or axially. In this way, a particularly trouble-free discharge of the liquid phases from the centrifuge drum is achieved. The outlets or overflow weirs can also be very advantageously adjusted in height.

The centrifuges shown schematically in FIGS. 1, 2, 3A and 3B are known, different embodiments for the continuous separation of mixtures of liquids of different densities, for example oil and water. These centrifuges essentially consist of a
In the centrifuge types shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the chambers A and C are openly connected with
For the sake of simplicity, the centrifuge parts and chambers shown in the figures are provided with the same reference numbers and letters.
In the centrifuge shown in FIG. 3A, one or more tubes are provided as
- H o = height of the oil layer above the oil-water interface in chamber C,
- D = oil density 0
- H w = height of the water layer in chamber A above the level of the oil-water interface in chamber C
- D W = waterproof
- ΔH = height difference between the surface of the water in chamber A and the surface of the oil in chamber C.
H o must not be so large that the oil flows into the water chamber A under the lower edge of the
According to the invention, as FIG. 6 shows, an
The
However, as shown in FIG. 7, the separating device shown in FIG. 6 can be very easily improved by installing a
Furthermore, the
In many cases where e.g. If there is a mixture of oil, water and solids, which must be separated from one another into the individual phases, there is at least one phase in this feed mixture, the density of which is between that of the oil and that of the water. This is a phase that forms between the oil and water layers and that can consist of different substances. For example, this intermediate phase can be an emulsion of oil and water, plastic or wood particles, and other solids that float at the interface between oil and water. This interface material, referred to as the intermediate phase, can lead to a displacement of the interface between the oil phase or the water phase, such that this interface material flows together with the oil phase over the
Due to further measures according to the invention, however, the interface material cannot accumulate too much in the chamber C and can be discharged either with the oil, with the water separately or with the solids.
If the interface material flows with the oil flow from the chamber C under the
If, on the other hand, a pure oil product is to be obtained, this can be accomplished very easily by installing a correspondingly shaped
The liquid interface in chamber C is determined by the immersion depth of
If desired, as FIG 9 shows, the interface material are also very beneficial discharged separated from the liquid phase, particularly b .EI solid floating substances is very advantageous. By installing a
- The lighter phase accumulating in chamber C flows over the upper edge of
partition 9b into channel D and from there underpartition 8 into chamber B, from where it is discharged in a known manner. The height of the liquid interface in the chamber C is determined by the depth of the bottom of thepartition 8. Thepartition 3 is set significantly lower, or extends deeper into the liquid than thepartition 8, in order to prevent the lighter phase from escaping from the channel D or the chamber B into the chamber A. The heavier phase flows out of chamber C below the bottom edge ofpartition 9a, which is set lower than the bottom edge ofpartition 8, and enters chamber A.
This embodiment shown in FIGS. 10A and 10B can be used particularly advantageously in solid bowl centrifuges. In the case of screw centrifuges, the partition walls, as shown in FIG. 11, are simply mounted between the screw augers Fn and Fn + 1 which are spaced apart from one another.
Im unteren Bereich dieser Trennwand 9 ist jedoch eine kleine Öffnung 11 vorzusehen, um zu gewährleisten, daß sich das hydrostatische Gleichgewicht in der Kammer B ungestört ausbilden kann.FIGS. 12 and 13 show the special arrangement of the measures according to the invention in a tubular jacket centrifuge and in a plate centrifuge. While the lighter phase here passes from chamber C into channel D and from there under
For reasons of clarity, the partitions or baffle plates according to the invention are shown in the figures shown in the drawings essentially as flat plates. It is understood, however, that the shape of each partition or baffle can be adapted to the corresponding requirements of the centrifuge shape. This means that accessories for the centrifuge can also be included in the partitions. For example, the
The centrifuges shown in FIGS. 15 and 16 are three-phase solid-bowl screw centrifuges with a screw conveyor located inside the rotating centrifuge drum and arranged coaxially in the centrifuge drum. The speed of rotation of the screw conveyor differs a little from the speed of rotation of the
As further shown in FIG. 16, a new chamber E can also be formed very advantageously between the chambers C and A in a three-phase solid-bowl screw centrifuge by installing a further partition 15 ', specifically for the separate discharge of the intermediate phase, e.g. in the form of an emulsion in chamber C under the oil layer. The intermediate phase is guided here under the
In this example, in operation of the three-phase solid-bowl screw centrifuge for the continuous separation of oil, emulsion, water and solids from a mixture thereof, the
The advantages of the three-liquid phase centrifuge designed according to the invention can best be understood by comparing an oil extraction process using this centrifuge with existing processes, in which two centrifuges connected in series are often required. For a better illustration, a comparison is made when extracting oil from tar sand. The use of the Of course, the three-liquid solid-bowl screw centrifuge designed according to the invention is not limited to these comparative examples, but the centrifuge according to the invention is also suitable for any other multi-phase liquid-solid separation.
In the previously known processes, a mixture of oil, emulsion, water, clay and fine sand was placed in a normal solid bowl screw centrifuge, which removes the majority of fine sand. This sand is contaminated with a substantial amount of valuable oil, which is lost as a result. Although it is desirable to remove the maximum possible amount of clay and sludge in the solid-bowl screw centrifuge in order to simplify the subsequent separation of the liquid phases, the intensive ejection of further fine solid particles in the standard centrifuge would increase the oil loss in the water phase. The mixture of oil, emulsion, water and fine solids (sludge) is subjected to intensive shear stresses in the centrifuge at high speed and leads to increased emulsion products, which make a subsequent separation of the oil and water phases more difficult. The oil, emulsion, water and residual sludge mixture is then centrifuged in a nozzle plate centrifuge which carries out three phases, namely sludge, water and a mixture of oil and emulsion. The clay and the fine solid accompanying substances in the feed material lead to high maintenance costs for this second centrifugation stage. The nozzles of this disc centrifuge must be relatively large in order to prevent blocking by remaining coarse particles after the first spin stage. The large nozzles require a significant increase in performance as well as a correspondingly voluminous increase in the water flow through the nozzle.
When using the three-liquid solid bowl centrifuge according to the invention, many of the above-mentioned disadvantages are reduced or completely eliminated. With this design, no oil layer forms at the solids discharge end of the centrifuge, which would cause renewed contamination of the already sedimented solids. The solids are discharged from a water phase and not saturated with a top layer of viscous oil. Since the solids are generally reslurried with wastewater and pumped into mud ponds, it may not be necessary to dewater them. In this case, it is desirable to discharge solids and water together to facilitate pumping into the mud pond. The mechanical load on the screw conveyor of the centrifuge designed according to the invention is reduced if the solids are not raised above the surface of the liquid and are transported along a drying section to remove the surface liquid.
For this reason, the solids transport capacity of the centrifuge according to the invention is higher than the centrifuges known to date. Furthermore, the centrifuges designed according to the invention enable an oil phase to be obtained in the purest form possible. The emulsion phase also contains only a low solids content. The emulsion phase can be treated with a demulsifier to remove the remaining water without the need for large amounts of demulsifier, which would be necessary if all of the oil were mixed with the emulsion. As an alternative solution, however, the plate centrifuge emulsion could be applied, which can be much smaller than that required for the existing processes, since it would not be necessary to process the large volumes of oil and water that are available with the existing processes accumulate, and most of the abrasive particles would already have been removed.
Fluctuations in the ratio between easily dilutable oil and raw bitumen cause differences in the density of oil and emulsion phases. The density of the emulsion phase also depends on the ratio of the proportions of diluted bitumen and water. Changes in the density ratio of the different phases have an adverse effect on the performance of the existing disc centrifuges. These adverse effects can be greatly reduced by installing additional partitions or baffles, such as shown in Figure 13.
The invention is not restricted to the embodiments shown in the drawings. For example, the invention can be used in the same way for plate centrifuges with circumferentially arranged nozzles for the continuous discharge of the solids as well as for plate centrifuges in an open jacket design. In addition, the invention can also be used advantageously in any other type of centrifuge with one or more centripetal pumps or stripping devices and separate discharges for the liquid phases. There are also various possibilities for the separate discharge of the dewatered solids, which lie within the measures according to the invention.
