Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for producing water-emulsifiable air-drying lacquer binders based on modified drying fatty oils, the emulsions produced therefrom being distinguished by improved stability, drying and water resistance.
- modified drying fatty oils is understood to mean conversion products of fatty oils in which the modification is carried out either on the double bonds (polymerized or isomerized oils, dehydrated castor oil, vinyl- or cyclopentadiene-modified oils and the like) or by converting the glyceride system (Alkyd resins, urethane resins, etc.). In most cases, several of these options run in parallel (see, among others, smock, textbook of paints and coatings, publisher W.A. Colomb, Stuttgart-Berlin, 1971). In the present application, these conversion products of fatty oils are referred to as alkyd resins and oil paint binders.
- the poor storage stability of the alkyd resin emulsions is not a purely physical phenomenon: the coagulation is preceded by partial saponification of the resin molecules. It is obvious that emulsions have favorable conditions for a hydrolytic attack: the aqueous phase is slightly alkaline - the pH is usually between 7 and 10; the area of attack is large - it potentially increases with decreasing particle diameter. Fine-particle emulsions, which initially have the best stability, are therefore particularly sensitive.
- the process according to the invention gives finely divided, transparent emulsions which are suitable for the formulation of air-drying paints.
- the emulsions are distinguished by a storage stability which is significantly improved compared to the prior art, even at elevated temperature, and show excellent drying behavior.
- the coatings made from it have good water resistance.
- the P ⁇ G reacts with the methylol groups of the phenol-formaldehyde condensate with etherification.
- the phenolic resin is used in an equivalent excess. This reaction can optionally be catalyzed by adding an organic acid.
- the formation of chromium ring links between the phenolic resin and the double bonds of the fatty acids can be assumed. According to Hultzsch, Chemistry of Phenolic Resins, Berlin, Göttingen, Heidelberg: Springer 1950, this reaction proceeds via a quinone methide intermediate.
- the methylol ether bond between P ⁇ G and the benzene nucleus derived from the phenolic resin is very stable in a weakly alkaline medium. Since the next ester bond is separated from the P ⁇ G chain by the voluminous chrome group and part of the fatty acid chain, the water attack is very difficult. In addition, the emulsifying action of the P ⁇ G is not lost even when this ester bond is saponified, since the chromium fatty acid linker remains in the molecule as a lyophilic group.
- the molecular weight of the polyethylene glycol used is between 500 and 5000 - preferably between 1000 and 3000.
- the phenol-formaldehyde condensates used are low molecular weight reaction products made from monoalkylphenols and / or arylphenols with formaldehyde (generally referred to as resols) which are produced in an alkaline medium and which should contain an average of at least 1.5, preferably 1.8, methylol groups (methylol functionality at least 1.5 ).
- the alkylphenols used are those which have alkyl radicals having 3 to 9 carbon atoms as substituents, such as p-isopropylphenol, butylphenol, amylphenol, octyl- or nonylphenol. P-tert-Butylphenol is preferably used.
- Bisphenol A and cumylphenol are preferably used as arylphenol, in particular in a mixture with alkylphenols.
- As a catalyst for the reaction between the P ⁇ G and the phenol condensate optionally up to 5% by weight, based on all raw materials present in this stage, of an organic acid, mono- or dicarboxylic acid from the group of unsaturated oleic fatty acids, (meth) acrylic acid, maleic acid , Fumaric acid and the various isomeric phthalic acids can also be used.
- Unsaturated oils with an iodine number of more than 125 and practically hydroxyl-free esters of the unsaturated fatty acids in these oils with polyols are suitable for reaction with the P ⁇ G-Resol reaction product.
- These raw materials include the drying and semi-drying oils, such as linseed oil, soybean oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, dehydrated castor oil, and the esters of the unsaturated fatty acids found in these oils with e.g. Trimethylol ethane, trimethylol propane, pentaerythritol, neopentyl glycol and the like.
- Oils whose oil fatty acids have double bonds in at least partially conjugated configuration are particularly suitable, as is the case with wood oil, oiticica oil, individual types of dehydrated castor oil, artificially isomerized oils, and artificially produced esters which contain such fatty acids.
- the etherification reaction between P ⁇ G and phenol-formaldehyde condensate takes place at 100 up to 160 ° C. If necessary, the removal of the water of reaction can be accelerated by azeotropic entraining agents.
- the reaction of the condensate with the esters (stage 2) takes place at 180 to 250 ° C.
- Alkyd resins can be produced by transesterification of the P ⁇ G phenolic resin-modified oil with polyalcohols and further esterification with polycarboxylic acids. If necessary, additional amounts of drying oils, the corresponding oil fatty acids and cyclic or aromatic carboxylic acids can also be used.
- polyisocyanates preferably in the presence of small amounts of aprotic solvents, it is also possible to produce urethane-modified alkyd resins.
- alkyd resins can be modified by copolymerization with acrylic and / or vinyl monomers or by incorporation of carboxyl- or hydroxyl-functional acrylic and / or vinyl copolymers by the monoglyceride process according to Solomon (The Chemistry of Organic Film Formers, New York 1967).
- the water-emulsifiable oil lacquer binders can be stand oils, urethane oils or resin-modified oils which are produced by the known methods.
- the ratio of the components should be selected so that the end product has a P ⁇ G content of 4-12% by weight or the reaction is to be carried out in such a way that an intrinsic viscosity of 8-15 ml / g (measured in chloroform at 20 ° C) and an acid number of 10-30 mg KOH / g is reached.
- the etherification reaction between the P ⁇ G and the phenol resole is carried out in the presence of part or all of the unsaturated oil.
- This embodiment is preferably used when the modified oil is to be further processed immediately in the same reactor. In this case, the filling of the reactor in the first stage is in many cases too low, which means that the reaction cannot be carried out properly.
- the resins are then, if appropriate after the addition of a maximum of 20% organic auxiliary solvents, such as butanol or monoethylene glycol monobutyl ether, at 50 to 100 ° C emulsified in water.
- organic auxiliary solvents such as butanol or monoethylene glycol monobutyl ether
- the water contains as much of an organic or inorganic nitrogen base as e.g. Triethylamine or ammonia, that 50 to 100% of the free carboxyl groups of the resin are neutralized.
- the products produced by the process according to the invention serve as the basis for air-drying water-dilutable lacquers which can be applied by the customary processes. Forced drying at temperatures up to around 80 ° C is also possible, as is the formulation of stove enamels. In the latter case, small amounts of amino resins are added to the paint batch as additional crosslinking agents.
- a suitable reaction vessel 320 parts of P ⁇ G with an average molecular weight of 1500 are reacted under protective gas with 200 parts of PK 1 and 20 parts of linseed oil fatty acids for 80 minutes at 120 ° C., about 30 parts of water being distilled off. Then 900 parts of wood oil are added and the temperature is raised to 200 ° C. The reaction is complete after 75 minutes.
- this preliminary product 282 parts of this preliminary product are in a synthetic resin reactor, which is set up for the azeotropic process, with 210 parts of p-tert. Butylbenzoic acid, 190 parts of pentyerythritol, 76 parts of linseed oil fatty acid and 0.4 part of lead octoate (10% metal content) and 0.4 part of calcium octoate (4% metal content) were added and transesterified at 240 ° C. for 90 minutes. Then, after adding 160 parts of phthalic anhydride and 40 parts of tetrahydrophthalic anhydride, the mixture is esterified at 200 ° C.
- the alkyd resin is diluted with ethylene glycol monobutyl ether (BUGL) to a solids content of 90% and 30 parts of triethylamine and 1260 parts of deionized water are added at 60 ° C. with vigorous stirring within 15-20 minutes.
- BUGL ethylene glycol monobutyl ether
- Example 1 the following resins or Emulsions of these resins are made.
- the oil (from stage 2) can be present during the etherification without changing the properties of the end product, although care must be taken to maintain the catalyst concentration (values in brackets).
- a water-emulsifiable urethane alkyd resin is prepared as follows: In the presence of 85 parts of an isomerized linseed oil with a share of 40-45% conjugated linoleic and linolenic fatty acid and an iodine number of 170-180, 40 parts of P ⁇ G (average molecular weight 1500) and 25 parts of PK 2 etherified at 140 ° C, 5 parts of linseed oil fatty acid are added as a catalyst. After 60 minutes, the temperature is raised to 200 ° C. and the batch is kept at this temperature for 90 minutes.
- the mixture is transesterified at 240 ° C. for 90 minutes.
- the alkyd resin precursor is then prepared by adding 40 parts of tetrahydrophthalic anhydride in an azeotropic process at 200 ° C. by esterification up to an acid number of 25 mg KOH / g. After the circulating agent has been distilled off in vacuo, the resin has an acid number of 21.6 mg KOH / g and an intrinsic viscosity of 6.6 ml / g.
- this alkyd resin intermediate 95 parts of this alkyd resin intermediate are mixed homogeneously with 11 parts of methyl isobutyl ketone at 80 ° C. and heated to 90 ° C. after the addition of 5 parts of tolylene diisocyanate. After 60 minutes, 0.2 part of dibutyltin dilaurate is added and the temperature is held for a further 5 hours.
- the resulting resin which has a solids content of 90.6%, an acid number of 20 mg KOH / g and an intrinsic viscosity of 9.1 ml / g, is emulsified in 139 parts of water after the addition of 3.5 parts of triethylamine.
- the Emulsion has a solids content of 40% and a pH of 9.25.
- the following example shows the preparation of a water-emulsifiable acrylic-modified alkyd resin.
- the resin After adding 60 parts of BUGL and 16 parts of triethylamine, the resin is emulsified in 725 g of water.
- the emulsion has a solids content of 40% and a pH of 8.9.
- the acrylic resin precursor is a copolymer of 70 parts of methyl methacrylate, 25 parts of styrene and 5 parts of acrylic acid, which was prepared in 100 parts of xylene in the presence of 2 parts of di-tert-butyl peroxide in a conventional manner at 135 to 140 ° C and a solids content of 50, 7%, an acid number of 39.5 mg KOH / g and an intrinsic viscosity of 14.3 ml / g.
- a resin composed according to Example 1 is produced by the previously customary process (comparative test A).
- comparative experiment B the P ⁇ G content was increased by 15% to improve the stability of comparative experiment A. According to this procedure, the P ⁇ G is only installed via ester bonds.
- Example 1 In the presence of 0.2 parts of Pb and Ca octoate, 90 parts of wood oil, 40 parts of linseed oil fatty acid and 105 parts of PK 1 were transesterified at 240 ° C. for 90 minutes. After the addition of 80 parts of phthalic anhydride, 20 parts of tetrahydrophthalic anhydride and 32 parts of P ⁇ G (average molecular weight 1500), the same final values as in Example 1 are esterified at 200 ° C. An emulsion prepared in accordance with Example 1 is significantly cloudy and less viscous, which is a sign of a larger particle diameter and thus poorer emulsion stability.
- paints are produced which are pigmented with titanium dioxide in a pigment / binder ratio of 1: 1 and with 3% (based on solid resin) of a water-compatible siccative mixture (containing 1.2% Co , 7.2% Ba, 3.2% Zn), 1% of an anti-skin agent and 0.5% of a leveling agent.
- the paints are diluted to the application viscosity with deionized water.
- Water resistance test The test is carried out after 24 hours of air drying by storing the films in water at 20 ° C. for 24 hours.

Description
Colomb, Stuttgart-Berlin, 1971).
Butylphenol, 1 Mol Bisphenol A und 10 Mol Formaldehyd.
- VB A) Nach 7 Stunden koaguliert
- VB B) Nach 71f2 Stunden koaguliert.
