Abstract
The invention relates to a microorganism strain Lactobacillus plantarum Inducia DSM 21379 for use as hypocholesterolemic, antimicrobial and anti-oxidative agent. The food products and compositions comprising said strain have a cardio-protective effect. L. plantarum Inducia is used in preventing cholesterol metabolism disorders and cardiovascular disorders by reducing the level of LDL-cholesterol, and simultaneously as an anti-oxidative agent for use in enhancing anti-oxidative activity of human body by reducing the levels of oxidative stress markers - oxidized low density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) and oxidative stress index (OSI). L. plantarum Inducia can be used as an antimicrobial agent in lowering risk of Clostridium difficile associated diarrhoea (CDAD) of endogenous or exogenous origin by preventing germination of C. difficile spores and by suppressing proliferation of C. difficile vegetative cells. L. plantarum Inducia can be used simultaneously with antibiotic treatment. The compositions against C. difficile may further comprise xylitol.
