Abstract

Process for separating stearic acid from palmitic acid or oleic acid from linoleic acid, when these acids are present in a mixture, by the mixture being brought into contact with an adsorbent which, under adsorption conditions, especially a 20-200 degree C and an overpressure of 0-35 kg/cm2, selectively adsorbs stearic acid or oleic acid from the mixture. The adsorbent employed is a non- ionic, hydrophobic, soluble, crosslinked polystyrene polymer. After adsorption, the adsorbed acid is preferably recovered by means of desorption using a desorbent under desorption conditions. Since the desorption conditions with regard to temperature and pressure correspond to the adsorption conditions, the process is preferably carried out as a continuous process in which an adsorption zone, a purification zone and a desorption zone, and preferably also a buffer zone between the adsorption zone and the desorption zone, are maintained in a column and the mixture which is to be treated flows through the adsorption zone, the buffer zone, where appropriate, the desorption zone and the purification zone. In this embodiment, the zones are periodically shifted cocurrently in relation to the liquid flow.
